If you want help:
>Assemble parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

My monitor (ASUS PB258Q) only has unadjustable hypersaturated presets and unconfigurable srgb mode. So everything's either blown out or washed out and there's not really an in-between.

How do you guys calibrate your monitor? Is there some software I should be using?

Is A8 9600 good?
>>
Im in to buy a 1600x ryzen CPU to upgrade my shitmachine
What mobos and RAM are suggested on a medium budget?
I heard fast ram is important for the infinity fabric, but should i look for 3200 over 2400 or prefer lower clocked dual rank sticks?
>>
>>62144776
Yes prefer 3200.
Get a B350 board.
You should probably just get a 1600 and not an X. The 1600 comes with a very good stock cooler and can be overclocked just as well as the X can.
>>
Is it reasonable to expect the 570/580's won't drop back to normal this year? I'm tired of waiting and might just pickup a 1050 to hold me over.
>>
>>62144749
no, dont buy any processors older than ryzen from amd. buy a r3 1200 or a g4560 if you need integrated graphics.
>>
>>62144823
Restocks slated for october might see a dip but they will not be MSRP. Get a 1050ti if you need a GPU but don't want to splurge for a 1080ti
>>
Why is RAM still retard expensive? I bought 8GB like 6 years back, and it's still the same fucking price. I want to upgrade to 16 already.
>>
>>62144805
Even though i wrote like it is for myself, im building the machine fo someone else.
Hes using it for gaming and is not tech inclined, so no overclocking and the twenty bucks wont kill him
Ive also always heard about the great stock coolers and this applies to the x as well? He wants to get himself a cheap ass CPU fan and I suggested against it for this reason
>>
how cheap can you go with regard to mobo, ram, cpu and gpu?

my dad needs a new home pc, the only reqs are a ~250gb ssd and 1tb hdd
>>
>>62144939
The X doesn't come with a stock cooler. But yes the one that comes on the 1600 is pretty damn good, and even good enough for a moderate overclocking.
OC is quite easy with Ryzen, you could do it for him quickly with a moderate OC like 3.7 GHz that would be 100% safe. But even a stock clocked 1600 is pretty good.
>>
>>62144955
Don't cheap out on mobo. You can get a decent one for ~$75 with rebates and specials.
RAM is RAM but don't buy literally who RAM. You don't want to have to deal with RMAing dead sticks, just stick with G. Skill, Corsair, Kingston, or crucial. On a budget, 2133mhz is fine, prioritize the speed over the CAS latency if buying Ryzen.
an r3 1200 is fine if you're tight on money, just don't expect a lot. depending on what your dad needs it for, it might be enough.
GPU too can be skimped on if he doesn't need it. If he doesn't game or do anything graphically intensive, a 1030 would be more than enough.

>>
>>62145001
And you think a 3.7GHz overclock on a "cheap" MSI Gaming Plus/Asus Rog Strix/Gigabyte GA Gaming B350 is completely worryless and easy via UEFI? Those are some of the cheapest ATX options i found and consider
>>
>>62145035
what cpu?
he got a quote through work and they suggested i5-7400

it also had a gtx1050 (which seemed like overkill to me)
>>
>>62145063
I've heard a lot of bad things against Gigabyte in those threads, but I don't have any experience myself. But yes, any of these motherboards will be fine for a moderate OC.

It's only when you start to get in very high OC that you should start looking for a board with good VRMs that have sufficient cooling.
>>
>>62144955
Don't get a Ryzen. Get something with integrated graphics like a Pentium G4560.

just wanna build a pc below 500 aud
is this all i need?
could i make any improvements other than my budget?
>>
>>62144955
Buy a prebuilt unless you really need to customize it somehow. You can't get similar price to performance ratio by buying individual components.
>>
>>62145109
same guy here,
i already own a hard drive and monitor
>>
>>62145109
You don't need thermal paste, the stock cooler comes with preapplied paste. Also consider getting 1050ti, it trashes 560 in benchmarks. I'm not sure how much it costs though.
>>
>>62145109
might want to consider a hdd
>>
>>62145131
1050Ti starts around $150
>>
>>62145063
The B350 Tomahawk from MSI will overclock just fine (I own one and I'd recommend it, it's an everyman's board and at 90$ with a rebate it's not too expensive or too cheap) and if you don't like MSI's BIOS you can easily do it with AMD's Ryzen Master software, which is very easy to use. Though be warned, that board is notoriously slow to boot so if the unit you buy has an old BIOS you might need to flash it.
But any of those boards will probably overclock just fine as well, and again you can always use the Ryzen Master software, which is worryless and can easily get you a modest 3.8Ghz overclock on any Ryzen CPU. The UEFI is only really necessary if you're shooting for higher than that, in which case you might need to mess with voltage and base clocks and whatnot.

>>62145066
Don't buy 4 CPUs in 2017 unless you're on a desperately tight budget please.
The 1030 will do him fine if he's not gaming, but if he wants to do graphics work you might want to splash on the 1050.

>>62145101
The G4560 is overpriced right, if it's not sold out, and the HD 610 is pretty much worthless for gaming. If he really don't mind buying a dual core in 2017, might as well buy the G4600, 10 dollars more at current rates and at least you get the 630, which is at least better than last gen consoles. But he might as well buy an AM4 board and an A10 APU if he doesn't having a shit CPU with much better integrated graphics, and it gives him the option of upgrading down the line without hunting on Ebay for Intel'ss quad core leftovers.

>>62145109
Fuck's sake don't pay 80$ for a dual core lad, you already have the GPU, 20 dollars more and you get a Ryzen quad core with an actual upgrade path.
>>
>>62145201
>A10 APU
if it's for his dad to go read his emails, i doubt he cares about graphics performance compared to last gen consoles.
>>
>>62145201
Fuck's sake I bummed up the spelling a few times here.

*it's overpriced right now

>>
>>62145109
Mate even the normal 1050 trashes the 560 for less of a price. Save 20$ by going for the 1050 and invest it in an R3 1200.
>>
>>62145247

>>
Trying to do some stuff to this R5 1600 that I just got, does anybody know how I can find out the date it was manufactured? I vaguely remember there being guides for this using a code somewhere (on the heatspreader?), but my google-fu has failed me.
>>
>>62144475
Upgraded from a phenom II X4 and 4 gigs of ram, got the R5 1600, 8 gigs and a B350, the performance difference is blowing me the fuck away, not to mention how quiet the wraith is compared to the phenom's stock cooler, which was hitting 90c under load ez, and sounded like a jet fighter trying to break the stratosphere

The R5 even under heavy load doesn't hit 75c in my shit weather, the wraith sounds like a kitten sleeping, and what the Phenom struggled to transcode for days the 1600 does it in hours, I can even transcode while playing gayms normally.

Only let down about the whole thing is I got gouged, but frankly still happy, shit's so amazing I'm having trouble believing AMD pulled this shit.

Def recommended for productivity and gayming, best price for performance, your gpu and hdd will be your bottlenecks.

No need for 4x4Gb, that cpu only supports dual channel. 2x8 will be the same and will allow more room for an upgrade.
If you're already spending that much, get a bigger SSD, and why not an m.2.
that case looks like complete trash.
and getting only a 1060 kinda defeats the purpose of going all out on the 7700k. the only reason to get that over ryzen is for the gaming performance, so if you get a middle of the road gpu with it you're just wasting money.
>>
>>62148706
There's no reason to get 7700k if you're getting mid tier card so upgrade that if possible or just go Ryzen.

The good ones actually are pretty well optimized (Doom, Prey, Tomb Raider). Right now the only thing I can think of that needs a not-too-shit pc is PUBG, but that's not even a good-looking game.

Anons i built my pc (pic related) more than a year ago, it's nothing fancy since i was (and still am) on budget but as you can see i never got a gpu 'cause a friend told me to wait to get the then soon to be released rx 400 series. Stuff happened and i never got one (i wanted the 470) so now i searched a bit about the 500 series and, since it looks pretty similar, i wanted to get the 570, but they skyrocketed in price. Should i just wait or look for something else? Like for example i found a Zotac GTX 1050 Ti 4GB at 175 eurobucks on amazon, is it good? I would like something that's not nvidia though.

Honestly, here are your options for 1080p gaming.

Buy the GTX 1050 Ti and underperform w/ 4GB of VRAM.

Buy the GTX 1060 3GB and have perfect performance, but limited VRAM.

Buy the GTX 1060 6GB (wait or get lucky to buy one cheap) and have perfect performance, and double the VRAM.

The GTX 1060 6GB and the RX 580 are supposed to both be ~$200. They're on par with one another, with the 1060 being better. They're both like $300-$350 right now.

Have an i5-6600k, just realized that newer games (even not so new as BF1) require hyper threading and that I should get an i7.

I'll confirm what the other guy said, go for a 1600, the stock cooler is very good and it overclocks the same as a 1600X. Go for 1x8Gb instead of 2x4, the benefit of dual channel is minimal and you can go for 3200MHz ram, 4000 offers pretty much no gain (plus as the other anon said, it will probably run at 3200 anyway).

This should be good for a while, since that CPU doesn't bottleneck a 1080Ti, and you have a good number of threads which modern programs use more and more. And you can get another 8Gb stick in the future for an easy upgrade (or go for 2x8Gb immediately if you want).

>>62151625
usage?
>>
>>62151143
no point in upgrading from a 6600k. you probably haven't even overclocked it seeing as you don't know what hyperthreading is.
>>
>>62151403

>Games aren't really optimized for hyperthreading

That is because Intel's uarch is still relatively "narrow" despite the massive widening that Haswell was. In the same vein its why outside of extreme cases disabling SMT on ryzen doesn't yield any advantages - the core has enough resources that it NEEDS SMT to achieve maximum throughput (and why hyperthreading can lead to negative scaling).

tl;dr 99% of the time hyperthreading is free performance but strictly speaking i7's are too expensive to justify them over cheaper alternatives.

Is there any reason to choose a X370 motherboard over a B350 one? I'm buying a Ryzen 5 1600x and will be hoping to get it to 4Ghz with 3200Mhz+ on the RAM.

>>
>>62155331
The FX CPUs are outdated and no one should build a PC from them. The performance is not worth it for the money since the 8 core FX can be outperformed by a dual core Intel i3.

That said, AMD's Ryzen CPUs are the best bang for the buck at the moment.
Read the OP and choose one of the suggested Ryzen CPUs.
As a bonus, you don't need water cooling on most of them. And all but the 1600X, 1700X, and 1800X come with good coolers that can handle an overclock

SLI, more USB/PCIe. You can just get a 1600 if you OC, and you can just get a B350.

>1000w PSU 80+
these numbers dont increase your fps. a 1000W 80+ PSU will waste 20% energy at it's best, which is somewhere between 700 and 1000 W. your components will need ~500W under full load. a 1000W PSU which only gives 500W will perform even worse than it's already piss-poor bronze rating, probably consuming 600W just to supply 400W. and if you dont pay for electricity, you might as well re-purpose your toaster, that will come 80$ cheaper.
>RAM DDR3
contrary to above, bigger "DDR" and "GB" numbers are better. 16GB is good, but atleast get DDR4.

It's not just ram, but SSD's as well.
There's an industry-wide NAND shortage, despite the factories being at full capacity.
Why? Blame Apple and Samsung. They have new phones coming out soon.

Swap the processor for a Ryzen 5 1600.
Motherboard-wise, I'd recommend the MSI B350M Mortar and MSI B350M Mortar Arctic (same thing as the regular Mortar, but it's white). Easily the best mATX B350 boards at the moment.
>>
>>62155672

Yeah, I tossed wifi in because I wasn't sure if I could get a cable to the computer considering how things are wired. Anyways, the motherboard comes with network connection so no need for a network card I guess.

The PSU is beyond overkill. You could probably do with a 550, 600, or 650W PSU with Gold rating.
Beyond that, add an SSD. 250GB or 500GB to hold the OS.
Looks good otherwise,

Ryzen 1600 or just drop all the way down to a G4600.
No need for a 212X with either.
Full tower is shit get a mid.
850w is overkill for your build.
>>
>>62157571
So much needs changing.
Remove the cooler, Intel i3, and the Z270 motherboard.
Get an AMD Ryzen 5 1600
Get an AM4 socket motherboard with a B350 Chipset
Change the ram to 3200 MHz.
Add an SSD. Samsung 850 Evo or Crucial MX300. 250GB or more, to hold the OS
Change the case to something actually good. I'd look at the Zalman Z9 Neo.
The power supply is beyond overkill. 650W with Gold rating would be perfectly fine.

You can ask us. Thankfully at this time the AMD CPUs are trashing the intel ones so you will get good answers vs people shitposting their brands (minus i7-7700k).

Otherwise, read reviews, google benchmarks and compare.
>>

change the motherboard. an mATX board in an ATX case like that will look odd... unless you like the look of empty space. Either way, the Asus Prime B350M-A/CSM isn't a good choice. B350 boards support overclocking, so you want a board with good VRMs.
Here's a list of recommended ATX B350 boards:
Asus Prime B350 Plus
Asus B350-F Strix
MSI B350 PC Mate
MSI B350 Tomahawk (same thing as PC mate but with more gaming-oriented features)
MSI B350 Tomahawk Arctic (same thing as a normal Tomahawk, but white)
MSI B350 Gaming Pro Carbon
Gigabyte GA-AB350 Gaming 3
Asrock AB350 Pro 4
Asrock Fatal1ty AB350 Gaming K4
>>
>>62158049
Can't recall the last time I used a disc drive but fair play otherwise. Look at the 200R or the 300R. Both are pretty solid and good.

The Zalman Z9 Neo is the best case at that price point with optical drive bays.
It comes with support for radiators, a PSU shroud, SSD mounts to show them off, rubber grommets and looks decent.
As a bonus, it comes in white or black, and comes with 5 fans, although 4 of them are trash and should be replaced anyways.
Good value case to be honest.
