Are later Radeons (post Southern Islands) still the best supported GPUs on Linux (via the open-source amdgpu driver)?

Last I checked, nouveau (open-source Nvidia drivers) were still flaky, Nvidia was refusing to support Wayland in their proprietary drivers, and both Ubuntu and Fedora made it a bitch to install Nvidia-proprietary drivers because of the Wayland issues.

Yes.
Anything GCN is fine, you'll need GCN1.2+ for AMDGPU+radeonsi though.
>GCN1.0/1.1 are usually via radeon+radeonsi, which is fine but doesn't support RADV, so keep that in mind if your buying used gear.

AMD open source drivers are, from what I hear, progressing very quickly now. I've seen some people suggesting they're actually better than the proprietary drivers for some games.

I'm shopping for a used workstation laptop (ThinkPad W-series, Dell Precision, etc.), and the Linux graphics driver problems are making the choices difficult because Nvidia Quadro really dominates this space, and when there are AMD FirePros or Radeons, they're pre-GCN or have some weird quirks that's not supported by amdgpu driver (not a lot of Intel integrated graphics-only models in this range either).

This is true, Vega's driver was better than the proprietary one on launch

pre-GCN is supported and works well, but 3D performance isn't on par with Windows and likely never will be due to lack of interest.

Anything GCN will work fine with great 3D (Windows perf with a few exceptions like Hawaii)
AMDGPU is just the kernel driver
The FOSS usermode driver that actually does the heavy lifting is
radeonsi
, which works with both radeon and AMDGPU kernel drivers.

Catalyst
is a proprietary usermode driver that runs on either FOSS AMDGPU or proprietary FGLRX kernel drivers.

See below for a support matrix
KMS usermode Terascale GCN1.0 GCN1.1 GCN1.2+
radeon + r600g
radeon + radeonsi
AMDGPU + radeonsi Experimental

AMDGPU + Catalyst
FGLRX + Catalyst

Half my shit is broken on vega lol. Can't do transparency with compton, can't use vulkan, can't use opencl. Gamma was fucked had to apply a patch. My favorite shell is broken and artifacted. Wine compatibility is terrible.
