Maybe if you're one of those retarded casual hipsters that won't shut the fuck up about their base spec PMMX 300 series shitpad like it's some kind of one-in-a-million collector's item. Why are these pieces of shit so overhyped? Is it really that hard to find a good 700 series system?
>>
>>62143026
It's not like they're really all that failure prone or anything unless you treat them like shit, most of the duds died out forever ago and a CF card isn't really going to be that convenient compared to a network solution or just using a PCMCIA secondary/callunacard.

What's the hype with LGR recently?
His channels is years old, nobody has given a shit.
His videos are Wikipedia presentations for the most part. He mostly makes money off of his videos and patreon, no real work.
He's a wannabe retro faggot. He doesn't know actually much about the hardware/software, mostly jerking off to old hardware because "I was 4 years old when I saw this at my relatives house, muh nostalgia" and then when he shows something he goes: "Uhghgagaha tis maeks meh happpeh!"

Also hes a fat/chubby manchild and got cucked by PUS.

LGR has tried to move on her since forever, but he's always in the friend zone because PUS likes to just screw around with "real men".

There where blog posts on PUS blog years ago, before LGR became popular, they are removed now, they made Clint (LGR) seem pretty darn pathetic.
There are some pretty awkward videos still what they have made together, where LGR goes like: "Eh...yeah...uh, I like didn't know you hard a boyfriend".

Did you skip over the parts where he replaced the CMOS battery, hard drive, nipple, and a fresh install of Windows? I mean, for a restoration it was pretty minimal but it was still more than just spraying stuff and wiping it with a cloth.
>>
>>62151661
those are all easily removable components that were designed to be user-serviceable, maybe it's a "restoration" if you really want to be that way but it's still giving him way too much credit for just buying some shit from ebay and burning a CD, even I don't jerk myself off that hard

this is a real restoration:

>>
>>62153363
I like how the definition of "hipster" changes every week or so. It's like "meme" and "botnet". Dude isn't anything remotely close to a hipster. He's just a guy who grew up during a specific period of computer history and has a sentimental attachment to it. If that's all it takes to be a hipster, then I'm one as well. You probably are, too.
>>
>>62153562
>He's just a guy who grew up during a specific period of computer history and has a sentimental attachment to it.
he's 28
he didn't know up with most of the shit he shows in his videos, except the occasional "I remember when I was 5 years old and played Doom on my relative's computer"
he has no nostalgic feelings to IBM PCs he's jerking off to so much, they came out 10 years before he was even born
that's literary hipster, he played it off as nostalgia, instead it should be just curiosity

>>62153641
I'm 39. My first computer was an Altair. It was around a few years before I was born. I had the opportunity, thanks to the employment of a parent, to have the privilege of playing around with a IBM S/370 fairly regularly as a kid. It predates me by almost a decade. Yet here I am with a nostalgic attachment to both of them, as I grew up with them. How does that work?
>>
>>62153699
>How does that work?
he didn't own any of those computers before he was already grown up you dildohead
he barely got to see or use them

>>
>>62153562
>>62153699

>>62153683
Anon is right.
He literally uses stolen nostalgia.

It would be cool if he's videos would be only about his interest in the hardware, not trying to fit in with a crowd that's easily 10 years older than him.
>>
>>62153756
yes, some shitty 486 he didn't even know how to use VESA with (something he didn't even learn about until his late teens, after having used a much newer machine for years), not a IBM PC
>>
>>62153765
Yeah, I don't know if I agree with this whole "stolen nostalgia" thing. It's like labeling someone who grew up in the nineties who happened to have a C64. Man, there were still a LOT of those things around when I was in high school, so I can't really get behind the "stolen nostalgia" thing if they grew up with it, regardless of their age. Frankly, it really just sounds like a phrase younger people who weren't around back then say out of bitterness. Not suggesting anyone here is guilty of that, I'm just saying what it comes across as.
>>
>>62150054
>tfw you used to do just that
>>
>>62153765
I can sympathize with his plight. I'd give anything to have been born 10 years earlier.
>>
>>62153836
That would have been fine and tandy if he has, for example, a IBM PC/XT or AT while growing up, but he didn't and most computers he came into contacts where 486 or newer already, yet he plays like it's nostalgia. So yeah, it's not the same as a 90's kid growing up with a C64, obviously someone who grew up with something, in any year, will have nostalgic feeling about it.

I was originally gonna use "appropriated nostalgia". Both sound negative, which wasn't really my intent.
I can't think of a word that covers "warm ruminative feeling for things not in your past, but in a past". I suppose those who watch LGR are even stranger as they are feeling stolen nostalgia vicariously.

They are not.
Also no, even your expensive nippon capacitors start to get bad after 20 years.
20 years is the maximum before GOOD capacitors start to go bad, even if they are visually okay, you need to check with a multimeter.

Only ceramic caps are safe.

They are probably dead unless they are solid capacitors, even if they look to be fine, the thing just works because you use clean power with it and it's not a digital thing in the first place. You probably don't even know how it should sound when it was new.

Not to mention, technology actually went worse over the years, those caps in your organ where probably not some cheap ones to begin with. Not that it would help much over several decades, they will die.

and replacing cmos battery, replacing hard drive and installing windows and drivers

you know, restoring it. making it work again. restored
>>
>>62155282
In ten years of servicing old hi-fi equipment from the early '70s to late 2000s I have yet to encounter a SINGLE bad capacitor from those brands. Hell, I've seen 85 degree rated ones next to heatsinks with their plastic foil shrunk that had better ESR and capacitance than brand new generic caps.

I can tell ya IBM isnt a fan of cheap parts.
20 year old 380ED has all good and tested caps, 30 year old PS/2 has all good caps as well

You know how as time went on floppy disks and tapes got cheaper in build quality? Newer floppies don't last as long as older ones? Same thing
When computers cost as much as a decent used car, that expense came in the form of quality components

Hell, the ps/2 has its original cmos battery that still holds its same charge and still puts out 3.01v to this day
>>

>When computers cost as much as a decent used car, that expense came in the form of quality components
that's the thing, it's a newer machine, late 90's

>Hell, the ps/2 has its original cmos battery that still holds its same charge and still puts out 3.01v to this day
I have a box full of Dallas RTCs that also where used with the PS/2 that all still have their original charge
Some PS/2's had rechargeable batteries that charged over the feedback power

>>62142368
As long as fans keep sending him hundreds of dollars worth of old shit every month he won't. All the restoration vids LGR and 8-bit Guy have been doing over the past few months are on donated items.

>>62143026
They're still cheap and relatively easy to get, he probably has a ton laying around too, and he leans more toward nostalgia than practicality.

>>62143216
>>62143276
380ED and 380XD are babby's first retro because they're common on eBay and relatively cheap, Or at least they should be, but prices are in wild flux at the moment due to the increase in demand from LGR's video and an overlap between hobbyists paying $40 and ""collectors"" paying $150 for the same laptop. The other series barely show up as often and sell for even higher.

Unless they're clearly leaking goo or they measure out of spec with an ESR meter it's a waste of time and money. I'd only bother otherwise if they're literally 50+ years old or made in a plague era (early 90s Macs, Sega Game Gear, Dell Pentium 4 towers) in which case they've probably already died.

Well, most shit is made in the plague era that we are talking about, those caps usually only last 20 years before something goes to shit. Better recap when you have the change, wouldn't want them to blow or short while it's in use. Obviously it depends on how much you actually care about your hardware. Caps that even seem fine can be a reason for memory problems, noise, etc on older machines, even when they seem fine.

>380ED and 380XD are babby's first retro
they are borderline retro to begin with
even a rarer configuration on a G5 PowerMac or a touchscreen LifeBook from the same time would be more retro in my book

>All the restoration vids LGR and 8-bit Guy have been doing over the past few months are on donated items.
I doubt that the recent 8-Bit Guy's PET restauration video was donation? I don't know though
>>
>>62157457
If they DO blow up or short in use, time to replace them of course. But that could be another 20 years from now.

>>62157502
That doesn't matter to the hipsters and vaporwave memers slowly infiltrating this hobby... If it's older than Windows XP it's retro to them.

Replacing the capacitors would not be a restoration. That would be a rebuild or refurbishing.

The point of a restoration is to preserve as much of the original item as possible. You wouldn't remove working capacitors until they failed, and if they did you'd try to repair the capacitor itself or replace it with one from another Thinkpad from the same era, or a period correct part as a 3rd string option.

When doing restorations there is sometimes the idea of "if it's not broke don't fix it" and taking the laptop apart down to the component level isn't something every restorationist would do unless it was necessary.

I rather liked how LGR used a period correct hard drive instead of going with the compact flash card solution. There's no need to try to modernize this machine. Let it be what it was.

It depends what you personally consider retro. I'm 20, my 380ED is only a few months younger than I am, I consider that pretty retro. Its at a time when technology was moving fast and it was outdated 8 months after its release. And I find that pretty cool, picked up a working one on eBay for 40 bucks and
>LGR restored it
(New HDD, moar rams, recelled the battery, new CMOS battery, loooooots of cleaning, installed 98SE)
And it was a fun project, and I really enjoyed it, I love the machine because it reminds me of what the world was like when I was a mere babby.
And I like collecting machines from when I was a kid, and I wouldn't call them retro, but they're on a similar tier of obsolete. My 2003 G40 for example, obsolete, I was 7/8 years old when it was new.

So for some people, a 90's thinkpad is what they start "retro" at. And yes, they're easy to get into, its entry level shit. When I had my fun with it, and I learned more about computer history and components and other shit like that, I moved onto a more retro project, my PS/2 Model 30. Sadly that one hasnt been as involved, its been mainly cleaning and rebuilding, since it was mostly working when I got it.

And then one day I hope to pick up an NEC PC9801 or am SGI Indigo extreme and get into top tier retro shit in the sense of rarity and difficulty.

In the end a retro computer hobby is just whatever the hell you want it to be, there's a guy here who's really proud of an Athlon XP system, and that's great, thats his retro.

I just like to find stuff, like these mac disks that just confirm to me that macfags have always been commies.

/g/!!!!!!!! Some guy on lgr's Twitter said FN + F8
Look! full screen dos on my 380ED! Holy shit ive trying to figure that out for months!
Doesnt look nearly as shit as I thought it would, but 98se in 640x480 is garbage
>>
>>62160031
Every /retro/ thread there have been posts telling you it's a FuNction key that will make it happen. I would have tried randomly already.
>>
>>62159905
I know anon, I was just messing with you guys for a second
>>62160031
>>62151294
Also, 95 is lame for a 1997 machine IMO. Original = yes, but 98se has everything 95 had and more updated drivers which give great performance in old games, especially for the audio
>>
>>62160046
I was always told FN + F7 and we later came to the conclusion that the screen just didnt support scaling, even on a few other forums they said the same. Kinda just gave up then. Theres like no documentation on this. I gotta write up a guide for thinkwiki for these things quirks or something
>>

Yeah, I'm not that profecient yet with old-school computers desu
Only reason I was able to even install and play DOS games is because the directory commands are just like Linux, and even then it took a while to remember cd .. And dir and what they did
But I learn more all the time, like god damn caillou or something

Next I want to install DESI-III properly and play with that neat CAD program. Now that I have full screen it might not be terrible
>>
>>62160216
Download and print out a DOS manual when you mess around with it, it will be far easier to remember and learn like that.
>>
>>62159867
Yeah, but there's a point where you just stop. After a video or two, you find another channel that you do actually like and move on. Obviously, this isn't the case for most people in this thread, who are regurgitating details about this fool they couldn't possibly know unless they had the majority of his video catalog devoted to memory.
>>
>>62160368
You can dislike someone but still watch some of his videos
LGR isn't also a new thing, he has been around for years and the videos have actually gone worse over time
>>
>>62160368
That's why they watch it, because he's a fool, there's an entertainment factor in it.
Not that hard to understand, I hope?

Why replace caps that are clearly working. Replace shit when it fails.

The only caps you should always replace whether they are working or not are the very old paper caps in a lot of early radio equipment and vacuum tube gear. The paper tends to break down and allow some DC through which caps should never do. That shit has to go, always. Replace with polyproplyne.

The easiest way to figure out of someone knows what they're talking about with faulty electronics is to see whether or not the first thing they go to is the caps and how they go about troubleshooting when it isn't the caps (assuming they don't give up).

It's one reason I don't really like 8-bit guy. His solution for everything is replace caps and that often times will not work.

I've got a fucking bench DMM from the 1970s sitting at home currently broken. After replacing the fuse is powers on but the display is wrong and it doesn't change when changing between resistance and voltage and the different ranges. I checked all the PSU voltage rails, +200V (for nixie display), +18V, -18V, and +5V and determined them all to be working. Now I have to start to look at the ADC and logic next. After checking caps and maybe voltages this is where people like 8-bit guy give up. Absolutely useless but I guess that's to be expected of a Macfag.
