With the used market as healthy as it is for 980ti sellers, I'd go for it. Just sold my 980ti for like 380, owned it for 2 years, bought a 1080ti for 720. So about half of the price was offset by selling my old card, somebody else got 1070 performance, and I got a very heefy upgrade. Win-win

Probably not, I have an overclocked 1080Ti and it's great but I can't imagine coming from 980Tis in SLI would be an upgrade.

If I wanted to game at 4K I'd have to either get a second 1080Ti or compromise on settings.

the fps hit for very slightly better visuals isn't worth it in most cases, better off with smoother gameplay than sharper visuals, besides if you really cared purely about visuals you'd be running an OC'd 1080ti at 4k 60hz, a 1080ti is more than capable for 4k 60hz gaming at high/ultra on current games. Don't need AA which is going to help fps further.

GTA V on the maximum settings, specifically grass + quality with any MSAA kills performance on anything lower than a 1080Ti. Dishonored 2 is totally fine on a 1070 if you use the resolution scaling feature, Rise of the Tomb Raider is just shit I feel like.

They were all playable but would have drops below 60fps or require some settings tweaks. I like the uncompromising experience the 1080Ti provides, that's why I was willing to pay $700 for it.

This is definitely bullshit or they mostly drove around the city which is where performance will be best on the absolute maximum details since there is little vegetation. Plus, that's the average framerate meaning it spent a lot of time under 60, so with vert sync meaning it'd be 30 unless I spent $900 on a 4K G-sync monitor.
