Like I said, decent is relative here. This is bluetooth we're talking about here. I don't think we can do any better at the $150 price point right now.
The alternative is quality closed cans with a detachable cable (ATH-M40x comes to mind) and a bluetooth adapter.
>>
>>62110171
That's probably true (for bluetooth, vs price), but the FR is still godawful.
Bluetooth headphones so fucking hopeless.
>>
>>62110171
Er, specifically closed because you could use double sided mounting tape to stick a bluetooth adapter to the outside of the cans without affecting acoustics; can't do that with open.

Not really a problem in the home, and honestly I walk to the grocery store with isolating IEMs and simply make an extra effort to be extremely visually aware of my surroundings at all times, never feeling unsafe while doing so. Just don't be an inattentive idiot.
>>
>>62110228
>Just don't be an inattentive idiot.
Friendly reminder inattentive idiots are usually not aware they are so.
Lose your focus just a second, get run over by a bus or hit by a tram.
Without headphones, you'd hear the danger and snap out of inattentiveness.
>>
>>62110241
I cross the street exactly twice on my walks to the store, at an intersection with predictable traffic light behavior, and I make a habit of looking both ways several times while doing so. I have never once felt like I was placing myself in danger. It doesn't take a hell of a lot of self discipline to simply look both ways a few times every time you cross the street without fail.
>Lose your focus just a second, get run over by a bus or hit by a tram.
I don't step out into the road, by rule, unless I'm focused on my surroundings. This isn't complicated.
>>
>>62110215
that's bluetooths limitation not anyone's fault. The real question should be why anything better than bluetooth that can completely replace bluetooth hasn't been invented yet.
>>
>>62110262
There's whole categories of dangers that can be avoided by just having your hearing available.

HD600 VS R70x? HD600 is cheaper and I think it's easier to drive. Any reason to get the r70x? All I've heard is that it's "not as warm as the HD600"
>>
>>62110265
Bluetooth 5 has enough bandwidth for lossless audio.
>>
>>62110307
HD600 is the most neutral full-sized headphone at any price. R70x is a slightly less neutral headphone with poor ergonomics which won't stay put on your head unless you have an above average sized head.
>>

HD600 are ~300ohm, r70x are ~500ohm, which few amps are designed to feed into.

I am currently running a very simple setup PC>Scarlett 2i2>cheap cans. I want to improve the audio setup on my desk a bit with better headphones, an amp and some sort of mixer so I can feed audio from my PC/interface as well as a gaming console or other sources easily. I'm trying to get my head around what this setup would look like.

Would pic related work?

Presumably, I don't need an independent DAC since the audio interface will be fulfilling that function?

I eventually want to add a pair of monitors into my setup. Obviously I could run them out of the interface but could I purchase an amp that can drive both headphones and stereo speakers so that I can use them for producing as well as speakers for playing games?

Apologies if this is too broad a set of questions for the headphone general, I just want to get my head around what products I need before I start looking at specific amps/cans/mixers.
>>
>>62110879
>sort of mixer so I can feed audio from my PC/interface as well as a gaming console or other sources easily.
If a muxer is good enough (rather than a mixer), you might want to look at the Schiit Fulla 2.
Another option is the Schiit Magni+Modi Uber Stack, assuming your console can output spdif.
Both solutions will output to an aux port when headphones are disconnected. You could, say, have some powered monitors like the lsr305 on these.

I've only had my HD600 for a day now but is it normal to be bothered by defaults in audio sources? I get paranoid into thinking the problem comes from the headphones until I plug in my previous ones and realize it's from the video or whatever I'm listening to. I have a feeling the HD600 are not really tolerant regarding these things.
From 15~20 to 30sec when he keeps yelling I can hear soft creaking noises for example (with both headphones, my old and the HD600).
https://youtu.be/S4bnl3pkOK8?t=15s

I realize I probably need a few more weeks to fully get used to those either way. I love them so far but I'm feeling very paranoid and scared they might have a default or something. Also I've been using my mobo so far to power them but I'm willing to try getting an amp as long as it's not overly expensive - any suggestions?

>(with both headphones, my old and the HD600).
Switching to different headphones (particularly better ones) will let you see (or rather, hear) detail you weren't aware of, from recordings you'd thought you knew well.
>I'm willing to try getting an amp
Fulla 2 is an awesome starter DAC+Amp.
I have it, I've tested my HD600 extensively (for weeks) on it (vs magni+modi 2u I also own), and it sounds great provided not extremely loud volume, in which case it distorts just a little whereas the magni does not.
It is an extremely nifty little thing with the right set of features, with a clear (add a magni2 to dac out) upgrade path. At least a couple anons here have such combo (fulla2+magni2).
>>
>>62111063
>I can hear soft creaking noises for example
HD600 here. They're not soft creaking noises. They're footsteps, his bag, etc.
>>
>>62110922
Presumably I could use something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/IMAGE%C2%AE-SPDIF-Audio-Converter-Extractor/dp/B00HMVMQOS/ref=sr_1_10?s=audio-video-accessories&ie=UTF8&qid=1412273596&sr=1-10&keywords=hdmi+to+rca

to convert the HDMI audio output from any console to an spdif input.

So I'd output from the interface headphone jack into the Modi Uber and also from the converter and I'd be able to swap using the switch on the front?

Would using some sort of unbalanced>balanced converter in order to use the interfaces line outputs (or upgrading to the 2i4) have any sort of sound benefit over coming out of the headphone port and into the Modi?

The Fulla 2 only seems to have a single input.
>>
>>62111213
Yeah defect, and I see, makes sense.
Thanks for the recommendations.

>>62111236

Sure, but that thing does cost money, and most consoles do already have an optical spdif to begin with (PS3, PS4 both do IIRC).

SR850 (668b clone) Very happy with this but it recently broke and I feel like it's a waste of money if I buy the same product instead of an upgrade
Bought HyperX Cloud as an upgrade because I thought I wanted V shape & the attached mic seemed to make using a mic easier, but after using a lav mic for a year boom mics are actually a huge pain, with the pleather pads the bass was way too strong, after switching to cloth pads the sound was very similar to SR850 but lacked that "openness" which I assume comes from the SR850's open back

Looking at k612 but not sure if there's better options out there

What do you mean by harsh highs?
>>
>>62115299
I'm talking specific female highs on certain songs. They literally hurt and I had to eq them, which isn't a problem. But just saying. The bass was my main concern though. I love the fact that they have strong bass for an open headphone, and that's partly why they're so good, but it just sounds a bit muddy and bleeds into the mids too much. I still love them overall though. Including the looks and the pads etc.

My top 5 would be:

600
650
k712
702
x2 or fostex t50rp
>>
>>62115420
I see. Asking because although I love how they sound for most of the music I tried so far (though it varies by artist) I found some of the highs unpleasant when watching something or right now playing a game, to the point where it actually hurts my ears, or rather, it's not an pleasant sensation around the mouth / tongue, not sure how to explain. Turning up the volume also makes them sound much better than at low.

Only had them for two days now so I need more testing of course. My previous headphones were really flat so it could be that my ears / brain aren't used to having such variations in sound. Also I do not have an amp, only tested on my motherboard and Switch so far.
>>
>>62115586
I used them with good/decent amps and still had that problem. Have you tried the 600 before? would buying them be out of the question? if so use an eq to reduce the highs a little. I'm not great when it comes to that and I think I had someone here help me with it a long time ago, but it removed the problem for me and I loved them. I only sold them because I had to find out how good the 600 were. I bought them from amazon knowing that I could send them back. I didn't.
>>
>>62115420
>I'm talking specific female highs on certain songs.
You are talking about 3,5K bump that gives vocals really close presence, I luv it, but on some songs esp weeb songs it's forwardness is too much, eps after K712 that have a dip in that area.
>but it just sounds a bit muddy and bleeds into the mids too much.
Nooooo, u du not understandu, loudness shatour, did u 3ple deaf test em? Just conformational bias bro, eq 10$ walmart shitphones to sound like utopia lul. Fucking retarded /hpg/, I told you HD600 bass is sloppy and if you EQ it up it goes to shit.
>X2
Ew, the fidelio ones? They were an instant nope for me, too much muddy bass, sound is fucked.
>>
>>62115641
No I hadn't tried any expensive headphones prior that. I just bought them considering how popular they are, and I thought it'd probably a good idea to start my headphones collection with those since they're considered neutral.

The box it came in was a bit damaged and opened but despite this the headphones inside smelled completely as new and didn't seem like anyone had touched them before, so having those little annoyances is making me paranoid as to whether they have defects or if it's just how these headphones are.
I don't plan on sending them back though (unless there's a clear defect), they're the best headphones I've ever had no doubt about it.
>>
>>62115729
The x2 are muddy as fuck but they made 5th spot purely because I have only tried/owned a certain amount of full sized headphones, non more expensive than the 650. The bass on the 600 is not sloppy at all imo. k712 has much more bass but it's not nice sounding to me. Bass heads will probably like them though.
>>
>>62115745
There is nothing wrong with your headphone, that's just how they sound. Funnily enough my box for them arrived slightly damaged and the main cable was bent as fuck near the jack. The headphone is very good. It's just no perfect. The 600 isn't perfect, no headphone is. But it's the closet I have came to it.
>>
>>62115829
Cheers.
What amps are you using? Would you say amps made any real differences as opposed to using your onboard audio?
>>
>>62115785
Ok my reading comprehension is -20. HD600 bass is decent in it's stock form but has a steep roll off, if you try to fix it with EQ it sounds bad. Try HD800, they have their own problem but the bass is much cleaner and tighter, and you need to EQ it up much less if you are a bass head. I am not a bass head but in these songs HD600 roll off really creeps up even tho that rest is perfect.

And here is one of few examples in my song library where HD600 poops itself.

Soon (tm) I will get pair of bookshelves and will be covered for life with my audio needs unless I get a big house and I need a pair of standing speakers.

So many headphones to pick from! I need something for the new school year to use on the bus and between classes and if it's good enough to use at home too then fuck yeah.
I'm thinking Dunu DN-2002, yeah?
>>
>>62115929
They do, but the difference is small. When you start spending a certain amount all the differences are fairly small. It just comes down to whether or you can afford it or care enough. I use the schiit stack but if you have nothing I'd recommend the fulla 2 as a first amp. It's great for the money, small and usb powered.

Anyone else with a DT-990 and a proper amp capable of giving them the volts they need to deal with the pre-amp reduction here give these peace settings a try.
I did an AB with my previous config and prefer this quite a bit for my kind of music.
The last EQ I posted was done with a couple of FR graph to try to bring them to neutral. This was done by repeatedly playing my favorite treble and bass song.
You'll note that sibilance is absent, vocals sound much better and in my opinion the bass is much more balanced and smooth.
Open to suggestions as always.

I'll check those videos out later, thanks. I love the 600 as it is but I add+2db sub bass just to give it that tiny bit more.

I have a decent onkyo amp and wharfdale speakers but I don't really care about speakers high end. I like the headphones because they're more accessible and interesting to me, including the amps etc.

Anyone know anything about Rose IEMs? I like the way they look.
Maybe I'm falling for the marketing but this is exactly what I want in a headphone: "Features: special ergonomic cavity, wearing comfortable and deep into the ear .noise-isolation, density, high frequency have reached the private mold level. The Vocal is matte, silky, highly appealing, high-frequency gorgeous, good extension and the instrument positioning prospective. Strong sense of the atmosphere. Sound field is natural, suitable for popular, small system and other music types."
Pic related is the BR5 MKII model
I think it's something like 4 BAs and one dynamic.
They only want $305 and it's on penon audio:

It's only below 50hz which falls off hard on the 990. Is just sub-bass. Mid bass up into the low mids is flat. Look at the numbers on the bottom.

Just my opinion so don't take it for much but I have the K612 and wish they were a bit more open sounding. They're definitely open, it's great for that, but also a little centred and forward. The sound isn't quite as wide and doesn't have AS much breathing space as you might expect, it's clearly coming from the centre. Like what I mean is the vocals are just forced upfront because of an upper mids emphasis and that can be "close" to listen to. It annoys me a little. But they have a light sound, and the treble sores beautifully without hurting people's ears. Overall for your price range I don't think there's anything neutral-bright as good.

They're comfy enough to wear all day but I have a small head and they sometimes clamp on my ear.

So why is this entire thread obsessed with anime avatar fagging and one brand of headphone and one model they make? Do any of you have real knowledge of what you talk about?

>Modi 2
get a fulla2 instead, same dac, better value
>Modi 2 uber
3 inputs, usb, spdif optical & spdif coax. Get if you need the digital inputs, else Fulla 2.
>Modi Multibit
Same as uber, but with multibit meme built in. So far, measurements say it should sound the same. Get if memed or if you have too much money and don't know what to do with it.
>Magni 2
Excellent value for $99. Absurd high power. Get this if you want to drive HD600 to crazy loud no problem.
>Magni 2 Uber
A little more power. Aux preamp outs. Get this if you also have speakers, and you want them to kick in when you unplug the headphones from the magni.
>Jotunheim
More power than you'd ever need. Balanced meme. Get this for the aesthetical value or if you have too much money and you don't know what to do with it.
Added note if you care about aesthetics: Uber versions of the stack use different metal than non-uber.
>>
The Jotunheim's forte is balanced output and being a dac/amp in one. Also has a better volume knob. If you don't care about balanced out and don't need the additional power the stack would serve you well.

No analog passthrough inputs in the modi. Schiit's solution for this is the SYS (that is, spending more money).
You won't have that problem with the Fulla 2, but in exchange you won't get any digital inputs.
>the max headphone i'll every get is a hd600, i think i will go with the stack.
HD600, uber stack and fulla 2 owner here. I do suggest you get the Fulla 2 and if and only if you ever need more power, get the Magni 2 and attach it to Fulla 2's DAC out.
This is a setup at least 2 anons hanging around /hpg/ do have and are happy with.

Strongly suggest getting the Fulla 2, if you're starting with only one thing. That's excellent DAC + good amp.
On my experience (guy with fulla2 & uber stack), fulla2+magni uber sounds identical to fulla2, but motherboard line out + magni uber sounds worse. YMMV, but in terms of making things sound good, it'll help you more than just getting the Magni2 Uber and praying that your source isn't fucking you somehow.
That $99 Fulla 2 is also the absolute best value of all the schiit items discussed.

Is there a big difference between the K701s and K702s besides the removable cable?

How would you compare the sound between them, the Beyers and the Senns?

DT 880s are you best option. There is the HD 600, or you can save money and eq out that treble peak
>>
>>62120397
No difference. The 702 anniversary edition has a bit of extra bass though.

As someone who's owned both the 600 and 880, the beyers are more bassy, and have brighter treble but vocals will have less potential to be harsh. The senns have less bass but are in general more balanced.
>>

The HD600s and K712s both seem a bit more expensive than I was envisioning. What sort of improvements would I hear for that bump up in money?

Given that the HD600s will be almost twice the price for me the DT880s seem like a pretty tempting choice. They lack the removable cable I suppose but I intend to be using them at my desk so it's a set-and-forget thing. Is the cable one the DT880s decent? How does the comfort of the DT880 compare to the HD600s over long sessions?

well the HD6XX was US$200 off massdrop when it was available and it's just a rebranded HD650. Not sure about Australia, but I imagine the HD650 is something like US$400 there because upside down market. I fully expect a 3rd drop for the HD6XX to come again around Christmas/New Year.

i would not buy an HD600 in Australia if it's anything like the pricing situation in Canada. I would not recommend the K712 either since the build is very disappointing for its price, looks like a $100 headphone. Sound signature aside, it's not like sound quality actually differs that much around this price range.

It's absolutely worth it if you want it to be a long-term investment since cables breaking is the most common way for headphones to break.

HD600 are more neutral/accurate; HD650 are more warm/dark. The difference is about 3 dB of treble or bass, depending on how you align the graphs when you compare them. It's equally accurate to say HD650 have 3 dB more bass as it is to say they have 3 dB less treble.
HD600 are generally considered better sounding.

I've made some changes to my headphone collection that I thought I'd report on, hopefully this will be useful to someone.

ATH-M50
I swapped the stock pads for velour pads sold on massdrop. The only change I noticed is that my ears sweat a lot less. They are now much more comfortable to wear. I don't use the M50 that much, so I can't give a detailed explanation of any sound changes. To me they sound they same.

MDR-CD900ST
Another pad change. The stock pads on my CD900ST were starting to flake. Using pads intended for the V6 takes away the richness in the upper mids that I love so much. To get around this I imported a pair of Yaxi leather pads made for the CD900ST from Japan. After extensive listening I have not noticed any change in sound or comfort. The only benefit has been better aesthetics and not needing to buy another pair of pads for a few years.

MDR-V6
The pads on these were starting to flake and had done so much more on one side than the other. I replaced them with the sheepskin leather pads from Auray. Again there was no change in sound or comfort.

Schiit Modi 2 Uber
I needed to have the LEDs on my CA DACMagic replaced and while that was happening I didn't want to go without a DAC. I bought a Modi 2 Uber to use for a few weeks. I have not been impressed with it at all. It works and is better than onboard sound but it seems quiter and the sound feels a lot less open. I have spent hours comparing the DACMagic and the Modi with different headphones, in my opinion there is a big difference.

>>62121868
If you want a cheap but decent pair of wireless headphones, look out for a pair of AKG K912. These should available on eBay. They use UHF rather than bluetooth.

Nothing to regret re: Arch.
I've been using Linux since 1997. Debian, then ~2003 Gentoo and since 2015 I also have Arch (in everything but main workstation, still Gentoo).
Arch is fantastic, doesn't get in the way and has everything up to date + large AUR collection (better maintained than the portage tree). Basically 90% of the greatness of Gentoo (mostly giving up USE flags for base and -march=yourcpu) for, like, 10% the maintainance effort. Perfect for getting work done.

In my opinion I think they are better than the V6/7506, which I also own. I love the textured treble with electronic and clear smooth mids with vocals. The sound is similar to the V6 but it's much more refined with greater clarity and less sibilance. They feel less closed in and have a more open sound stage than the V6. I find that I am able to wear them for hours with discomfort. I still spend about 70% of my time listening to these instead of the K712 or the HD650. I highly recommend them if you listen to female vocals or classical. Just be aware that they can be sterile and cold with more heavy genres.

Open isn't magical, but it tends to sound better / price. That is the main lure for me, and the reason they get recommended a lot.
Other than that, there's better comfort (less pressure for the seal, no unpleasant "underwater" feeling of not being able to hear properly what's around you and/or hearing your voice oddly or your breathing too much) and more "natural" sounding (to do with soundstage and imaging).

Disregard the other anon. They are uncomfortable because the headband does not distribute weight well, leading to hotspots. You can wear them for like 2-3 hours, then you may notice it. Mdr 1a is generally more comfortable and has a bassier sound, even though it can be a bit muddy/sloppy at times. Msr7 has worse build and comfort, but has a more detailed tight sound. Can't go wrong with either
>>
