What's the current consensus about high end processors?
Which of the following is best?
TR 1920X
TR 1950X
i9-7920X
i9-7900X
i7-7700K

I'm looking for a powerful and versatile chip that will be good for the next 5-8 years.
>>
>>62106206
TR 1950X is by far the best
>>
>>62106206
Pentium G3258 will last you 8 years or more for sure anon.
>>
>>62106221
how do you think it will compare vs i9-7960X? will the latter be overkill/overpriced?
>>
>>62106206
You want supersonic speed for games and single-tasked programs? Get the $300 CPU.
Or do you want mediocre speeds, but all the threads and thus all the headroom for multitasking and well-optimized programs? I guess threadripper, but non-compensating Ryzen fits that bill just fine
>>
>>62106285
I want an all-around powerful pc, good for multitasking, good for playing 4k content. Not so much for gaming, but I'll be doing scientific computing on it and also just for everyday use.

My current desktop was pretty good in 2009, but is now slowing down, and I don't want to have to worry about getting a new desktop for another 8 years
>>
>>62106326
Sounds like you could benefit from cores
That pretty much makes high-end ryzen (or threadripper) your best bet. But I mean good luck on threadripper prices
You'll also need a GPU since no graphics on ryzen, and you'll probably want to make use of a good one
I'd say check out them 1800 series ryzen, lotsa cores, decent clock, not insane prices
>>
>>62106326
1950X it is then
>>
>>62106476
I mean 7900x would be great too, but I don't know enough about the latest lake rehash to confidently give you advice on that
>>
>>62106490
Depending on which programs you're using it may be worth setting aside some money for a capable GPU
I have no idea what programs make good use of cuda though
>>
7700K is fucking not high end. It's just very good at single core for gaming.

Thanks for the replies. I was leaning toward TR too, with a 1080ti gpu.
My only concern is that I've never had an AMD processor, and till recently I heard that they'r generally unreliable and more prone to failures, and that intel "just werkz".
But I also heard that i9 was kind of a rushed marketing move on intel's part, and that it might not be very good. Is that about right?
>>
>>62106551
No CPUs are "prone to failure" whatever that would mean, they will outlast everything else in your build probably including the case.
>>
>>62106551
>I heard that they'r generally unreliable
This is coming from a company that had to deal with their CPUs bricking expensive networking devices a few months ago and their 10 year old HT implementation still not having a fix on Kabylake CPUs
>>
>>62106535
The main computing software I'd use is Gurobi. I've read a bit about how well it uses multiple cores and it seems its internal engine generally does benefit from multiple cores, though not super-well. Maybe future editions of it will better leverage multiple cores
>>
>>62106551
ThreadRipper = workstation
7700K = gaming
Ryzen 1800X = everything in between
7900X = housefire
>>
>>62106575
This, AMD could become king and hell mightve frozen over, but this meme is not dead. CPUs still last a shitlong time if not overvolted (even overheating isn't catastrophic)
>>62106551
Pretty much memes now, AMDs (deserved) reputation of unarguably-shit CPUs really ended with ryzen. Ryzen is a solid choice now
Vega still has no drivers and is not even fully functional so yeah, ya can't beat a 1080ti for a long time
>>
>>62106632
Good to hear that about ryzen, I was hoping that's the case

i9 was rushed, but it is powerful
It's also very hot
I'd only get it if both single core performance and multi core were both a top priority, but that's unlikely

Fucking jewtel, stealing my money even after I buy their cpu
>>
>>62106551

When looking at into on a product, don't listen to what the competitor says. Those claimscome directly from Intel.
>>
>>62106206
None of them, wait a few more years if you can we’re obviously in a transitioning phase, especially if the competition between intel and AMD is starting to heat up again
>>
>>62106206
If you have to ask, it is time for you to buy an iPad.
>>
>>62106244
It will shit all over it, most importantly in power consumption and temperature. Just look at the 10 core Skylake-X.

>>62106221
Avoid getting pooripper. If you want gayming get the 7700k or wait for 8700k which will come with a major jump in performance and IPC. For productivity get an i9
>>
>>62106206
TR 1950X hands down, no competition whatsoever
>>
>>62106206
>threadripper
what are you going to do with it?
just get r7 1700

Productivity = multitasking = more cores/threads
Cry and moan all you want but RIPtel is a joke in comparison to KIKERIPPER. Stay rectally shattered and anally devastated.
