Does anybody actually own one of these?
How well do they perform?
Depends on game. Some hammer PCI-E lane too much and it's a stutter fest. Some run smothly.
It's recommended to use external display, so you won't waste limited bandwidth on sending data back to internal display.
The laptop cpu is just gonna bottleneck the gpu
>>62106869
Buy an external cpu then retard
>>62105941
I bought one but I was unable to get it working on my laptop for some reason.
>>62106869
It would depend on the CPU I imagine.
>>62105941
Not worth it. Only decent rounded solution are thunderbolt docks.
>>62106869
Not really. Assuming the CPU in the laptop is decent. Most games are GPU dependent.
It's a shame affordable Thunderbolt ones never appeared.
>>62105941
Use it on my T530. Posting on it now.
80% of desktop performance.
Use nvidia because their optimus approach had them develop PCIe compression which allows it to work well over a 1x connection of an expresscard.
You NEED to boot UEFI for it to work.
The free and open nvidia drivers are hot swappable but the nvidia binaries need a reboot.
The free drivers barely work on anything past Kepler.
>>62107796
And why aren't thunderbolt docks as cheap as express card ones?
I have a thunderbolt laptop id like to do this too so that I can benchmark gpus and optimize my code for entry-level cards and test my code on different levels and shit. Got a lot of extra gpus laying around and lots of gpu work that could benefit from the rapid test benching.
Is there any good external PCIE thing I can use. Even one for desktop
>>62105941
it works pretty good for overwatch. x220 + 750ti = 60fps at medium on the internal screen. don't get anything better than a 1050ti for an mpcie x1 egpu setup or you're wasting money
new vegas is well over 60 fps on ultra, prey runs passable 30-50fps on medium, nier 2 runs like dogshit (nip developers are terrible at optimizing their pc ports)
>>62105941
I have the Expresscard 2 version, works fine for me, I can play Doom 4 on a T420 using a GTX 970 and it runs great, might be game dependent how well it runs tho

New tech and proprietary.
>>62107860
Intel still has a hefty licensing fee for thunderbolt.
That does not explain why some cheeky cheapy chinky company has not just done it anyway but it's the best reason I can find.
They're going to drop the licensing fee next year so hopefully laptops going forward will benefit from affordable docks.

>>62105941
Mint if you already have the parts you need. Not worth going out and buying a laptop, gpu and psu for it though.
>>62106260
How do you even send it back to the internal display?
>>62106899
>>62109727
through pcie moron
>>62109736
The internal screen is only connected to the internal GPU/IGP genius
>>62109800
Yes, and what do you think PCI-e is connected to ?
Fairy dust ?
not worth it unless you have quad mobile cpu
with dual core you will enjoy cpu bottleneck
9xx and newer series geforce can show picture on internal screen
there will be 10-20% performance loss
>>62106899
Legit made me laugh
Is there any way to send output to a laptop screen without noticeable lag? I hear vnc only works for static or nearly static stuff
>>62106869
My t540p has a 4700mq.
I'm back to destroy your eGPU discussions.

I'm waiting for Raven Ridge
>>62111762
>Laptop + GPU works but a desktop is better
How is this new?
How is any of this new? No one expects a laptop to compete with a desktop seriously, adding an egpu will still offer some massive performance gains for many though.
>>62111764
PCIE 3.0 x4 isn't going to bottleneck more than 1-5%. It's insignificant.
>>62112407
Only if you're buying into planned obsolescence. See my link about PCI 3.0 x4 throttling: >>62111745
Also see this bro giving advice about not buying high end GPU.
>>62107990
Since you cannot upgrade your thunderbolt connection, you're buying into the now and not for the future. Enjoy your short-sightedness.
>>62113978
>hurr durr you're so shortsighted
>hurr durr what will you do 10 years later if you invest in this now
I'll just buy something else by then, retard. No matter what you buy, 2 years later it's outdated and 3 years later even the manufacturer doesn't provide drivers anymore.
>>62109800
wait.
do you genuinely think the screen directly connected to the gpu on a laptop?
wow.
