How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 or Vega 56 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor

I've been thinking of doing a virtualized build, using linux as the host and having windows guests for casual gaming and hobby game dev, and a couple linux guests for banking and wanking. I know if I go intel I need to have a cpu with vt-d in order to get pci-e passthrough to my gaming guest, does AMD offer an equivalent and if so what is it? Would you recommend intel for this build or AMD?

Its the worst optimized game I've ever played also looks and feels like Arma, ofp with a mod over the top.

And yet it's so fucking good and the desert map is coming.

I replayed crysis 3 it ran fine it's just cpu heavy
>>
>>62099714
PUBG is like that because UE4 isn't designed for maps of this size and for this amount of players. Even the netcode is shit.
I don't get it how the devs thought it's a good idea to use an engine like that for a game with a massive map and a large amount of players.
>>

I'm aware of that. Actually I was wondering about the consumption of the system if I just had a server without X, no monitor plugged in.

Anyone have an experience with dust blowers like pic related? It's $90 which seems excessive, but if it's quality and stops me from buying compressed air ever again I might jump for it.

There's an older model, but it's only ~$15 less.
>>
>>62100533
Depends on how often you clean out your PC. If you do it once every 3-6 months, get compressed air. If you do it once every month, invest in it.
>>
>>62100526
It's a terribly outdated engine stuck in 2007 and CSGO does not utilise multithreading properly if at all.
de_nuke (among many maps) has (micro-)stuttering issues on several processors, namely an overclocked i7 3770K at 4.2GHz.
>>
>>62100533
$15 is a great price if it also has a 2-3 year warranty. Compressed air does not even come close to the same value.
>>
>>62100533
I got the older (cream/tan/whatever colored) model a few years back at a TigerDirect for like 50 bucks.

Its just a blower with attachments, so I agree that 90 is a bit insane, but I never regretted spending the 50 because I'd have spent that on compressed air a few times over in the time I've owned this thing.

They do run a little warm though, I can generally do mine and my girl's computers - and do a really thorough job - before the temp of the air coming out of the thing starts to make me worry a bit.
>>
>>62100526
csgo isn't even on source 2 and it still uses only 3 threads.

>can both run on literal toasters.
cs:s ran much better on older pcs than and global offensive isn't even much of an upgrade graphics-wise. it would perform much better if there wasn't any retarded skins and shit like that.
>>
>>62100555
Wasn't that down to the devs being fucking retarded and doing a rendering of the map badly?
>>
>>62100600
Same problem with Dota2. It is a great engine for what it is meant to do but developers going full retard will obviously cripple even extremely good engines. Like Frostbite and Andromeda
>>
>>62100607
The devs are retarded, yes, but it is insane go achieve performance-damaging frame drops and input lag while GPU is at ~80% and CPU is at fucking 40%
>>
>>62100632
>for what it is meant to do
Considering Gmod severs still ban you for small scripts and projects, it's worse than gamebryo.
>>
>>62100633
Remember that majority of those playing CSGO and Dota2 are doing it via toasters. It is obviously better to cater to the low-end crowd than the high-end one. Not saying what they are doing it right but obviously it is intentional.
>>
>>62100653
For what is meant to do here means running it on toasters. The only more toaster friendly game engine is MT frameworks.
>>
>>62100673
>MT frameworks
Time has come and so have I, anon.

I'm going to sperg out on a new gaming PC w/ Linux dual boot, I have some q's pls no troll

1. Are there any meaningful differences between brands/makes of GTX 1080Ti? I want my shit to last so I'm not going to OC it. Being quiet would be nice. I don't want to have to download shitty rice software to get it to work. Should I just go cheap as possible, eg the ASUS Turbo? What about silicon quality - what does that affect.

2. Is the Dell S2716DG gud?

3. For Z270 motherboards there's a big price range. Why would anyone pay $200+ for one? Would a MSI Tomahawk gimp me with a 7700K and 3200 RAM?
>>
I want into GPU passthrough and need a AM4 mobo for that.

According to several guides online you need to have
1 PCIe 3.0 16x slot for the guest GPU
1 PCIe 3.0/2.0 slot that's not able to Xfire/SLI with the slot above for the host system

It seems only the higher tier AM4 mobos feature a setup like that with the cheapest being the MSI Krait x370 for 140€.

Anyone else dabbling with GPU passthrough on here that wants to share his build and experiences?
>>
>>62100717
1. Nothing. Only difference is temps, noise and features (RGB)
2. Read the reviews.
3. Motherboards that can overclock K processors have huge price ranges due to difference in quality of the components used which affects overclocking
>>

Is RAM more expensive nowadays?

I thought by now a pair of 8gb sticks would cost less or at least comparable to what pairs of 4gb ddr3 sticks cost 5-6 years ago. Maybe it's cause I'm looking at gaymer ram but the "value select" ram isn't much cheaper. It's such a bummer when a ryzen board and CPU upgrade looks so attractive. Looking to upgrade a friend's PC.
Looking for decent gaming performance, the rig currently has a FX6300 and a Radeon HD 7770, and the PSU is weak as hell (Amperage is barely holding up the current spec).
Would the FX6300 hold up with say a GTX1060? And I've noticed the RX580 is around £50 more expensive than the RX480, and I was under the impression they had roughly the exact same performance, is this due to the mining phase or is this legit their prices?
Recommended upgrades in the £300 mark?

1060 6 GB
The 580 and 480 are overpriced. Only get them if you are similarly priced.
>>
Does anyone have a prediction when I'll be able to buy:
- 4 core CPU, each core at least Phenom II tier.
- at least 750 Ti or better performance GPU (can be integrated)
- 4 GB of fitting RAM, at least 1666 MHz
- mATX or smaller mobo to accommodate the above
all new for less than $200 total?

The point is to spend exactly as much as I spent on my current PC 6 years ago but end up with something better.
And yes, I checked. There's nothing under $200 that even comes close.

I was thinking 2018, but now that we're closer and I see how ridiculously far away we are from the goal I think 2020 or 2021 is more likely.

Do you think we'll ever get to such a point or is consumer market done for, and it'll never get to price/performance from 5+ years ago?
>>
>>62100745
>>62100746
>>62100779

Thanks anons.

I think I'll go for a midrange 1080ti optimizing for heat sink/fan quality so it runs cooler and lasts longer.

I'll stick with the MSI Tomahawk since I don't care about OC.

The S2716DG holds up in all reviews I've seen. Mostly just bitching about TN but I don't get the hate; it gives 1ms resp and no light bleeding. I can up gamma if I care about blacks.

I basically want to drop $2.5k on a gaymen system and be set for the next decade. We'll see.

>>62100757
Yeah Phoronix is showing AMD's open source drivers as better, but Nvidia's closed source still blows it all out of the water. Anyway I won't be using my GPU

>People consumed by greed fucking disgust me.

>>
>>62100919
The main issues preventing what you're describing are RAM, mobo, and CPU prices. RAM and mobos don't really get any cheaper to make. Also we're already at a point where even budget CPUs are noticeably faster than phenom II. It's not like you can go even lower to save money - the option doesn't even exist (someone correct me if I'm wrong - do celerons still exist?).
>>
>>62100919
>all of that for under $200

>>
>>62101038
If it's USD vs Crypto, I side with the USD 99.9% of the time. Crypto as it exists, regardless of intent, exists today as a get rich quick scam. To the detriment of any point people may have ever intended.

The fall-back argument of anyone trying to convince people to waste their fucking time with crypto is always "But people back in 20XX all said the same thing, and then it exploded! And it'll do it again!" It's appealing to greed and naivity. That's not promoting a currency. That's abusing people's weaknesses.
>>
>>62101167

It is a proper investment opportunity proven with time, and then some. It is a currency by intelligent people for intelligent people. People who know what they want and do not need unnecessary and senseless government intervention like VAT or purchase records.
The US dollar, meanwhile, has started numerous wars and is in complete and utter control of several dozen people. It is subject to schemes such as trickle-down economy and money printing. It is a piece of paper that is no more valuable than what the government says it wants in taxation.

>>
>>62101084
>The main issues preventing what you're describing are RAM, mobo
Alternative route is: keep it AM3, DDR3 but use up to $140 on CPU+GPU.
Which leaves us with crap options anyway because no AM3 APU holds a candle to Athlon II, and new Athlons have no i-gpu so we're back to square one.

>we're already at a point where even budget CPUs are noticeably faster than phenom II
And are so expensive it should be illegal to call them budget.

I'm guessing it's used parts market that keeps new parts' prices so high, right?
Considering used mid-tier phenom II X4 is still over $40, it'd make no sense for any company to release something new for anything less than $100.

It leaves a purchase record, though. The FBI knows every transaction that happens over cryptocurrency. You inherently leave a trail. Otherwise, it's a perfect currency for scamming helpless people who don't have access to powerful friends.

Otherwise get whatever the fuck you want. At the end of the day as long as you're above HDDs you're good. A good tradeoff as well is just getting 120gb just for your OS and main things you use and using an old or new HDD for storage. You don't need a 500gb SSD.

>Dolphin is a dual core application that relies upon IPC (Instructions Per Clock) for performance. Additional cores will not make Dolphin go any faster, though an "extra" core that Dolphin isn’t using may help slightly by keeping background tasks from using the same cores as Dolphin.

>Intel: Newer Core i5 and i7 processors such as the i5-4670K and i5-3570K are extremely fast and very affordable considering their relative power. The K series allows for overclocking, which can further improve the performance of those CPUs. Core i7 variants yield almost no benefit in IPC over the i5s they are based on, so save the cash if you’re building a Dolphin machine. For laptops, you can rely on the i7-4700MQ and i7-4930MX for the absolute best performance. Most games will run very well on any of those processors.

>AMD: Due to very low IPC, AMD CPUs are poor choices for Dolphin. The FX8000 line of processors is the best they have, and even then most of those processors will be around half the speed of the 4670K’s performance with Dolphin.

I managed on an Asus laptop in 2014 though so idk. Also modding a Wii is piss easy even I managed fyi but speed up is really nice

I need a large 4K monitor with good color accuracy and 10-bit depth for content creation. No games at all. LG is jewing on the info for the 32UD99 and has pushed back the release date twice already. If all you play is CSGO and Dota2 type of games that don't require a powerful GPU, then a 1070 would be a waste when 1060 6GB would suffice. If AAA games are you thing, then get the 1070.

Also since you said you can spare the cash, I bumped the RAM up to 3200mhz.

I need help...

get a 1600 + b350 MSI Tomahawk for $280 (Newegg $50 off+$10 mail-in-rebate)

or

Ryzen 1600 + MSI b350 Carbon ($344)

Would need to spend at-least $20 on a CPU cooler, so would only save $40 bucks but have a worse MOBO.

sitting on a 1080 and a psu, just got my case. halp plz.
>>
>>62109240
Ok, I like to play CSGO and a bit of Skyrim like games, mainly CS now tho, so 1060 it is.

No CPU cooler though? Why is that?
>>
>>62109265
1600 comes with a stock cooler that is pretty good. Only get a CPU cooler if you plan to OC well above the norms.
>>

shit meant to say first deal is for a 1600x, not a 1600.

Basically, what is better, a better mobo with more heatsinks, and spending $40 bucks for that

OR

having a shitty b350 Tomahawk, ryzen 1600x and some $20 after market cooler.
>>
>>62109329
Former. Especially since AMD is planning to support it till 2020. So a better mobo might last you till Zen2.

Throw in a cryorig H7 then.
But keep in mind that you will need to order a AM4 bracket for that. It is free but you need to contact cryorig for it.

If you are lazy then get the Quad H7 which comes with native AM4 support which is just the H7 with fancy RGB.

ASUS Maximus Hero 9 (MOBO)

GTX 1080TI ASUS (gpu)

I have a thumb drive of W10 somewhere but having trouble finding it. Is there anything else I can try?

It's recognizing the HDD in the BIOS, does that indicate it's not dead or does it not tell you anything? Does it narrow anything down?
>>
>>62109513
If it is recognized in the bios, that means it isn't dead. Why it isn't booting to the HDD? Probably missing boot partition or something. It isn't dead but it might be damaged, just hope it is a bad OS that you can recover from.

Another way to test is to plug it into an computer and try it.
>>
>>62109553
Ok, thanks.

I'm an idiot. How do I check/add the W10 partition? I have an extra thumb drive and can download link related. Do I try that?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
>>
>>62109568
Yes. Download that. Turn a USB into a bootdrive. Boot from that USB. And during the windows installation check if your OS is appearing under possible drives to install to. Don't have to actually install it to it unless you don't mind losing your data in the HDD.
>>
>>62109329

samefag here.

found this ram on newegg

which is on MSI's supported list https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/B350-TOMAHAWK.html#support-mem-2

Will it work at 3200? It is Samsung RAM to boot.

Or do I need to buy the memeram that says Ryzen on it for $50 more?

i7 6700k or i7 7700k for 4k video playback? Also is the 7700k really a bigger housefire than the 6700k? looking to upgrade from my i5 6600 non k because it uses 100% cpu when playing 4k videos

currently have RX580 GPU. CPU is bottlenecking it. going to get a Ryzen 5 1600, with whatever mobo is compatible at microcenter tomorrow (and get $30 off the CPU because they have a deal). ddr4 im getting i was thinking of G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series. and an SSD.

one problem: i have a huge C: i want to transfer over. i am going to go from Windows 7 to 10 (sadly). can i just plug it in the new cpu and it'll work or do i need to back it up? i don't want to wipe it. would it need to be the C: drive or can i use it as another drive?

It should work natively. Your license might be invalidated if it is the OEM version. Otherwise plug and play will work although I recommend a clean install anyway to remove old drivers and install new ones.

fantastic, thanks. im just going to plug and play, then do a clean install after i move everything over.

thanks but i already have 2 externals, one 1tb and the other around 600-700gb, that cannot be read by my computer because my USB devices are screwed up thanks to a garbage program i downloaded (scptoolkit).

i really don't want to buy another one when i really don't need to. i think what i'll do is move all my music to the new SSD, the little scraps (around 10-20 gb? maybe 100?) to my internal HDD (2tb) that actually can be read, and then do a clean C: install. i can have a new C: though, right? i was thinking of making the SSD the new C:. will this scheme work?

Would it be a bad move to buy a Dell S2417DG monitor in the upcoming few months?
What I like about it is
- 144 hz
- 1440p
- fast response time
- well built, clean minimalistic look, nice stand and thin bezels

I obviously want to use it for gaming, cs go etc. but I want it to be decent for daily use as well.

What I'm concerned about is that new tech such as HDR/mass 4k adoption is just around the corner and might make this seem ancient in 2-3 years. That's obviously a problem in anything related to tech but I'm on a tight budget and anything I get is at least a 5 year investment.

yeah, im going to clean install it on the new SSD. for some reason i thought because it's currently a C: drive, it needed to be cleaned at some point...but i can just use it as a normal driver later, right? further, the garbage drivers that are screwed up won't affect the new install, correct? because the new install will be on the SSD. assuming i don't clean it

True. But there's still HDR to be concerned about. From what I've read the difference can be pretty striking and if nothing else might entail a price drop for this older tech.
Also this is a TN panel and a lot of "gaming" monitors seem to be moving towards IPS, something I don't quite understand given the slower response time.
>>
>>62111625
...i just realized, the old drivers won't affect anything at all because they'll be under the old Windows.
>>
>>62111646
TN gives a your weird experience if you aren't facing your monitor from front, IPS where as is same from any angle.
you won't notice that much of a difference unless the TN panel is a bad one
>>

Yes. Clean install it on the SSD. Don't even use your old HDD as a boot drive. Do this.

1. Install new OS on SSD
2. Turn off PC
3. Connect your old HDD
4. Make sure boot priority is your SSD
5. Go to your desktop and transfer whatever you want.

>>62111636

I don't understand the question.

>>62111646
A good monitor will last you for years. At most if you want to invest in a new monitor, this one becomes your secondary monitor. Or you can just sell it. A monitor has a good resale value regardless.
