Amount of packages is a dumb measure. If you need a ton of tiny dbg and dev packages it easily rockets to 3000. Then again, some distros like Arch combine the packages, so comparing the amount of packages is retarded.

this. In gentoo I just emerge gcc which counts as one installed package. On debian-based systems there are at least 10 if not more packages build from the same source tarball (various compilers, C library, documentation both free and nonfree etc)
