This "DRM" is direct rendering manager. It is the kernel layer between your GPU and any graphical thing(including the frame buffer)
If you don't understand that, you are compiling your video drivers.
Now, why you would build intel and Nvidia drivers into the kernel, no idea. You should have built them as a kernel module.
Now, if you went through and just built everything in the kernel anon modules, then wat. The power of Gentoo and other source distress and selecting only what you need. Nothing more, nothing less. As it stands you are better off running Ubuntu then Gentoo.
