what I'd like to know is, what hardware would I need to connect to the WAN side of a cable modem. I have a few old modems lying around and I'd like to 'see' them from the ISP's point of view. if you search github, or sourceforge you'll find interesting projects for provisioning and monitoring them via SNMP. think about it. the ISP has nearly total control over these devices even if you pay for yours outright. some devices support snmp on the LAN side, but most do not. the ISP also has the option to disable SNMP for devices that do. I find this 'interdasting'.

also bump
Several Arris devices have their firmware available on sourceforge, but my understanding is that only the ISP can re/flash the device firmware. an nmap scan of my device reveals that there are several SNMP ports present, but are all closed.

I wish I still had my old 'Sharkfin' so I could change the system sounds. It has the ability to play several sounds and they could be replaced with whatever sounds you wanted. good times man.
