I've got an old acer netbook with win xp and it runs like shit. Is there any linux distro I can just slap on it and it just werks?
>>
https://www.bunsenlabs.org/ maybe?
>>
>>62062781
Install debian.
>>

debian minimal with x11 and mwm
>>
>>62062833
>NSA/systemd

Nice try, government.
>>
>>62062781
If it runs XP badly, it will run any modern OS badly, other than some firewall OS and TempleOS. Pro tip: It's too weak to become a NAS, even if it has 8 SATA ports.
>>
>>62059599
is best but if you don't know any of that then xubuntu
if it has 2gigs of ram you can ubuntu gnome

some said kde/plasma is low on ram but idk
if you want to try that then openpepe or kde neon
>>
>>62062866
It used to run decently though. I'm thinking with the right linux distro I can atleast use it to take notes/shitpost. So is debian the final answer? I've never used linux before but I'm open to figuring shit out as I go
>>
Debian or Puppy Linux (or whatever minimal Distros are popular right now)

Ubuntu and it's derivatives seem to rarely work efficiently on old hardware, especially on the first Intel Atom N
>>
>>62062866
default/release xp is not minimal, I have used one modded which started at 192mb ram that's as low as it can go after tweaked, default was a lot more, it's natural it would work like shit
you can run today's firefox on a 512mb potato with linux x11 openbox
>>
>>62062903
>So is debian the final answer
No.

>>62062868
is
>>
>>62062781
I used to have a tiny 10 inch screen laptop, it was some Intel Atom stuff. I installed xubuntu on it, ran perfectly fine. So if you want something simple, go for xubuntu, if you want to squeeze a bit more out of it, get debian with XFCE or LXDE desktop enviorment
>>
>>62062781
Lubuntu or Puppy Linux
Both are Lightweight, but Puppy is a bit lighter than Lubuntu.
>>
Use Debian
>>
>>62062781
Xubuntu or Debian with Xfce

>>

>>
>>62065767

>>
>>62066078
Nothing wrong with my internet just the netbook is old and weak as shit.
>>
wattOS is a fast desktop Linux distribution based on Ubuntu. Using the lightweight Openbox window manager as its default user interface, the distribution strives to be as energy-efficient as possible so that it can be used on low-specification and recycled computers.
>>
>>62065890
Does xubuntu have TLP preinstalled or should I apt-get it ?
>>
>>62066457
no idea but in my exp its very recommended to have it
>>
OpenBSD
Read the first boot message, the FAQ, and maybe a bit of fvwm documentation and prepare for comfy times.

What are the odds that switching to another distro than Xubuntu will allow me to smoothly play/stream video? I used to watch series from the netbook and now it can't run even 480p on xubuntu and I'm not sure if the device is just FUBAR and if any effort made to tweak it to performance will ultimately be in vain
>>
I was going to say Ubuntu but it looks like you've already tried that.

My next suggestion would be BunsenLabs. I used to use its predecessor, Crunchbang, on my old netbook.
>>
Wary Puppy
>>
>>62066788
little to none
go on the buntu irc to figure whats the issue
>>
>>62062781
who is that semen daemon?
>>
Xubuntu, then remove Debian and install devuan. Haven't tested it, but it should be possible. But that isn't the "just werks" solution, but a bretty good one.

Lubuntu. If that doesn't work do a Debian minimal install with openbox
>>
>>62069585
This

Lubuntu is lightweight, made for older/less powerful systems.
>>
Go for comfy framebuffer usage. I did that on my Tosh NB200 and it's really nice.
>>
>>62069300
Why don't these cute weebs ever do porn?
>>

How would I go about doing that?
