Why would you upgrade the OS on your phone?
It just gets slower with each new update.
Name the last time any software RAN BETTER after installing an update.
Name the last time any software FREED UP SPACE after installing the update.

Software ran much better on 5.0 and above simply because it started natively installing apps instead of installing them as virtual apps via dalvik. So, 2014?
Freeing up space is irrelevant since all devices have AT LEAST 16GB nowadays which is more than enough for the OS and apps. Unless you're massing images/videos or using offline maps you don't need anything more, and even then you can just use mSD or buy a 32GB+ phone.
