Why have all attempts at a FOSS smartphone failed, /g/?
>>
because FOSS is a suicidal business model
>>
Im waiting for the tizen z5 to buy.until then i use leanage os without gapps but with fdroid exclusively
>>
>>62055262
because our society functions on a market economy, and products rely on commodity production in order to improve and become popular.
>>
>>62055262
Android is quite successful
>>
Uh sweetie maybe because android the biggest OS is open source already.
>>
>>62055400
Smartphone != OS brainlet
>>62055262
Maybe because we live in capitalistic jewish money driven world
>>
>>62055489
If it doesn't have an OS it's not really a smartphone is it sweetie. Check and mate.
>>
There is kde mobile.
>>
home computers were made to be owned by the user and let them produce their own content more efficiently

smartphones were made to be gateways for people to access content providers

you'd need better standardization across the board over the lower levels in order for the os to be maintained well. but cellphones are sold as a closed package and that's not going to change

tl;dr - be grateful you can still install linux on your home computer
>>
>>62055262
Because Broadcom, Foxconn etc have monopolies on necessary hardware like radio chips and non of the manufacturing is in America
>>
>>62055262
because of shitty build and update system

Fuck you, what do you see?
>>
>>62055682
Possibly jaundice? You should get that looked at.
>>
>FOSS
>on a cellular device

What the fuck is the point? You must either go full freetard or not even begin. Nobody fucking cares about FOSS on a smartphone. People who want smartphones don't care about FOSS, those that want both are mentally fucking retarded /g/ tier posers who'll use a tracking cell tower's service but then gloat to their family members about their phone's "freedom".

The only FOSS smartphone is not having one. Cellular services are not ethically compatible so this whole thing boggles the fucking mind, who even thought this was a good idea?
>>
>>62055780
Better drive a 1970s car so it doesn't have a computer either you colossal faggot.
>>
>>62055396
>Android
>free
lmao what the fuck are you smoking
it's open source, that's the extent of it.
>>
because companies really really do not want you to have a phone that isn't a surveilance device
cellular would basically need to be replaced if you wanted it to not surveil you anyways
>>
>>62055262
FOSS SJW's move dev capital to finance their own agendas resulting in poor development and failure.

Have there been any attempts? Stock Android is completely open source apart from non-free drivers and Google services. Nearly all devices have the non-free driver problem and you don't have to use Google shitware at all. Even things like the Jolla Sailfish OS devices there's a non-free Android compatibility layer called Alien Dalvik. All of the low level bootloaders are usually non-free, but at least Nexus phones use the Qualcomm bootloader which is mostly open source. Not sure about the boot ROM though. It's still not free as in freedom because you're locked out by Qualcomm Secure Boot. Basically the boot ROM loads itself into memory and allocates some of it for the first bootloader that it loads. If it passes a signature check, it'll get unpacked and run. Then it loads your second bootloader which handles hardware initialization and boots the cellular modem and stuff, and then sets up and runs the OS bootloader which is the thing that NEETs here have to unlock in order to flash Lineage OS and it boots the Linux kernel and your userland. Well, the problem is that Secure Boot is enforced via a hardware fuse. We do have JTAG access to this mostly but how would you go about replacing these low level bootloaders with free as in freedom versions?

I say that if you want a phone that respects your freedom then one will have to be designed from scratch using completely open hardware with security in mind. This would mean a RISC-V CPU and cellular modem all running FOSS with proper isolation. Porting and maintaining Android on that would be more of a pain in the ass than it is for x86, so you might as well write a whole new OS for it. Come to think of it, RISC-V smartphones, tablets, and laptops with near prefect cross software compatibility would be pretty great. People already love x86 Windows tablets for this exact reason.

These are just my thoughts that I'm throwing out there. Don't bully me.

LineageOS is FOSS right?
>>
>>62055262
Because FOSS doesn't work
>>
>>62057770
That's the general issue, yes. (Qualcomm's bootloader has very recently been broken, however.)
>>
>>62057358
>triggered /pol/ who can't even talk about the point at hand.

The reason is because there isn't a market for it from the mass consumer.

They don't see privacy and security or open standards in hardware or software, let alone Libre.

Look at Tizen with Samsung, that's not going anywhere any time soon with all of that money and them being able to manufacture chips and board integration in house.

Then you java Ubuntu touch from Canonicle the gaint.

Lastly the Jala phone..
Our only chance is to continue with

LineageOS and vote with our dollar to get open bootloader phones.

We also have project treble to look forward to from the OEMs and the right to repair bill.

>>62057881
Yes
>>
>>62055262
Isn't android open source?
>>
>Why have all attempts at FOSS failed?

Gee who would have guessed that educated, paid professionals write better software than NEETs who do it for free?
