A GTX 970 overclocked can reach GTX980 stock levels, a GTX 1060 stock clocks is GTX980 performance.
A fair comparison would have been a GTX980 vs GTX1060 since the 980 being Maxwell, which in general gains more from overclockinn than Pascal a good GTX980Ti overclock can have better performance than an OC GTX 1070.
There is still the price and power usage which Pascal just plains out wins.

Apparently plenty of people since AMD wanted to copy that model, plus if you really want to look at numbers you can just go to forums like overclockers and look around the 1070/1080 threads, they keep a "club lists" and tons of them bough FE cards.
FE cards are perfect for water cooling.

Nevermind the insane perf/watt Vega 56 gives undervolted on the new drivers.

Vega 64 is going to have really good perf/watt once it's not front end polygon bottlenecked too.

Was the 3XX series a meme? I debated between getting a 390 or 980 on release, got the 390 and the 980 seems to fucking obliterate the 390 in everything. I think I'll buy Nvidia next time.

There is. Until primitive shaders get enabled in drivers Vega can only do 4 triangles per clock, which bottlenecks Vega 64 especially like crazy.

If you read the Vega whitepaper, they claim that primitive shaders delivers an effective triangle rate of 17 per clock...

200 series was the last good amd cards. 280 280X, 285X, 290 and 290X being the absolute peak of amd gpus. Even the r9 290 could be bios flashed to 290X and have the same performance. I could play BF4 ultra 1080p at 80~ fps
