How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Good fucking luck even getting a VEGA right now

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor
>>
I'm having a hard time choosing as workstation gpu. I'm on a 250-450$ Canadian budget for one. Will work with ecabinet and sketchup.

Should I buy quadro, firepro or just a high memory gaming card for same price?

Other anon here, currently with a RX 480 and an old shitty BenQ RL2240H, looking for a new monitor but still poor to buy something like 1080p/144hz or 1440/60hz. Is that Acer good enough over a Dell P2217H (http://www.dell.com/ed/business/p/dell-p2217h-monitor/pd)? Planning to do dual-monitor because work related stuff while using the newer only to play vidya.

Whoops, I forgot to change the fact that it's no longer 4x4 ram, it's 2x8.

With the speed of the shipping, I can buy an SSD any time and it'll probably come faster than the rest of the parts.

As for the PSU, yeah, I'm not particularly proud of it, but I can always get another one.

>>
>>62025133
For what use? Ryzen hits similar averages and minimums, its only the spikes where intel has got a lead lol
>>
>>62025133
For 144 fps gaming.
However. benchmarks are old and bios and software updates have changed things. There's only a 2 fps difference between the Ryzen 7 1700 and the i7 7700k not, and while the i7 is maxed out in games nowadays, the Ryzen chip still has untapped potential under the hood for software to explore.
>>
>>62025109
M.2 performs the same as normal SSD at higher price but has a nice bonus of not requiring cables.
>>
>>62025133
Take another look at those benchmarks. The Intel processors do indeed take the lead in FPS... when the resources the game requires are low. Put it into a CPU-heavy game though, and the Ryzen chips win every time
This isn't opinion. It's fact.
>>
>>62025164

Welp. Maybe another time. Maybe someday I'll switch over to AMD, but for now (since I bought everything already) I'll just stick to Intel.

The 7700k has it's uses if you want to squeeze every single frame out of what you're playing. It has no other use other than gaming though. If budget isn't a problem for you the 7700k is the best gaming cpu you can get.

No. Either 1060 6GB or 580.
The 570 isn't that bad. If you have money for an upgrade, see how much you can sell your 570 for and then buy a nice 1080 which should set you for the next 3 years minimum.
>>
>>62025261
Lose the H7 unless you are doing heavy OC. Get a seasonic PSU over a corsair one. Deathadder is garbage, get a G Pro or G403 instead.

Just moved my system to a new case, along with replacing the mobo/cpu. 2 of my 3 hard drives are showing up (the ssd with win10 on it) and my 1TB hdd, but my 2 TB isnt showing up in windows, speccy, or disk manager. No. They aren't cheap. I'm trying to diagnose the issue right now via garbled, autocorrect-butchered paragraphs.

Depends on how the computer is crashing. A hard crash might be indication of faulty PSU. A crash which requires you to power cycle might be a bad driver or faulty motherboard.

>>62025767
Anecdotal, but I've experienced something similar with a failing PSU. Started with BSODing a lot, then devolved into failing to boot and then crashing soon if I managed to get it to get to Windows. Thought it was the video card but discovered it was the PSU when it literally burst into flames.

You know PSU rating has no bearing with the actual quality of the PSU right? A seasonic bronze will still be better than a Raidmax gold by a large margin. Gold/Silver/Bronze only measures efficiency of a PSU in converting electricity. So a lower rated one simply pulls more watts off the wall. This only affects you if you are running your PC 10+ hours a day all year or 24/7/365.

You need higher quality components running at comfortably below their maximum capacity to get high efficiency.
Also good soldering increases efficiency, and build quality also affects efficiency.

However, there are other things, like voltage stability, power on spikes, and thermal handling that definitely aren't definitively lumped into higher quality parts.

Is it worth waiting to build a computer until black friday or should I go earlier? Do parts tend to have good sales online? I assume the mining shit won't be done by then?

>>
>>62028085
Sales like black friday are just a way for stores to dump unwanted stock. Apart from stuff like cases and other non-critical bits, computer parts would see a lot of serious sale action (unless they're sketchy GPUs manufactured by obscure Chinese companies...but stay away from those). The only time there's sales is between major generational shifts and older stock becomes practically useless and unwanted, so unless you want to constantly be behind on your hardware, it's okay just about a majority of the time to go for it.

No one is really ever sure on the mining situation, it was supposed to be crashing a few weeks back but clearly it didn't make much of a difference.

If your son has requested a new "processor" from a company called "AMD", this is genuine cause for alarm. AMD is a third-world based company who make inferior, "knock-off" copies of American processor chips. They use child labor extensively in their third world sweatshops, and they deliberately disable the security features that American processor makers, such as Intel, use to prevent hacking. AMD chips are never sold in stores, and you will most likely be told that you have to order them from internet sites. Do not buy this chip! This is one request that you must refuse your son, if you are to have any hope of raising him well.

>BSD, Lunix, Debian and Mandrake are all versions of an illegal hacker operation system, invented by a Soviet computer hacker named Linyos Torovoltos, before the Russians lost the Cold War. It is based on a program called " xenix", which was written by Microsoft for the US government. These programs are used by hackers to break into other people's computer systems to steal credit card numbers. They may also be used to break into people's stereos to steal their music, using the "mp3" program. Torovoltos is a notorious hacker, responsible for writing many hacker programs, such as "telnet", which is used by hackers to connect to machines on the internet without using a telephone.
>Your son may try to install " lunix" on your hard drive. If he is careful, you may not notice its presence, however, lunix is a capricious beast, and if handled incorrectly, your son may damage your computer, and even break it completely by deleting Windows, at which point you will have to have your computer repaired by a professional.
>If you see the word "LILO" during your windows startup (just after you turn the machine on), your son has installed lunix. In order to get rid of it, you will have to send your computer back to the manufacturer, and have them fit a new hard drive. Eth is an type of currency similar to Bitcoin but it difference is that it isn't vulnerable to ASIC so companies can't manufacturer specific hardware tailored to mine them but rather they rely on GPU instead.

Demonstrably untrue my friend, there are an awful lot of older games out there with shit multi-threading where single-core performance is all that matters. You only have to look at the difference in CSGO (which isn't even that heavily single-threaded) between Ryzen and 7700K to see that.

>>
will I get the jizz I'm suppose to put between the cpu and the heat sink with the cpu, or do I have to buy separately?
>>
>>62029882
The coolers that come with your CPU have it pre applied.

If you buy an aftermarket cooler, you'll need to buy one separate. I highly recommend the NT-H1.

If you want to remove this thing, you'll need isopropyl alcohol, though rubbing alcohol will work as well.
>>
>>62029876
Please stop commenting unless you've actually played CSGO. 300FPS in that benchmark usually means you're dropping down to 80FPS in the smoke section, which really means you're only getting about 120FPS on the shittier optimised maps at 16:9 FOV. There is an enormous difference in the smoothness of your mouse movements in CSGO even between 150 and 200FPS.

The point is a 7700K at stock clocks has a fucking 50% lead over 3.9Ghz Ryzen, in older titles that means a 50% lead or more. There are many older games out there that are still heavily CPU dependent because CPU single-core performance has been almost completely stagnant since Sandy Bridge.

Go kill yourself my man.

My monitor is only 110Hz, the differences between 120, 150 and 200FPS on it are plain as fucking day in terms of the smoothness of the mouse movements and reducing screen-tearing. My shitty Ivy Bridge CPU can only do about 200FPS on most maps. Any higher than that and it's diminishing returns, I can't really see any difference between 300FPS and 900FPS. I'd expect on a 144Hz panel the differences would be more noticable. An easy way to test this is fire up any old FPS on a private server that has commands to let you determine the speed runs at (to reduce CPU load and allow massive framerates), in CSGO its host_timescale X.

I really wish Moot implemented an IQ test before you were allowed to make a 4chan account, it would filter out a lot of the retards like you.

Aside from that you'll want to get RAM that utilizes Samsung B-Die chips, these chips play very nicely with Ryzen, also be aware that Ryzen works better with higher clocked RAM so the higher you can get the better. I'd suggest either Trident Z or Flare X (Flare X is marketed as being 'optimized' for Ryzen, from what I can tell they are just about the same but with some timing differences that are supposed to work better with AMD).

Honestly probably not. Unless you're super into Counter Strike or something like that it isn't that big a deal. You ask will you 'miss' it? Do you mean you've already got a 144Hz monitor? If so just set a custom resolution of 100Hz and find out.

t. own a 144Hz and 110Hz monitor, don't find there to be much of a difference worth losing sleep over
