ITT : Discuss about VPS
>>
What do you guys use your VPS for? I have one for years but I don't use it for anything
>>
>>61999279
Mostly overpriced.

>>61999454
Torrenting porn.
>>
10€/month vps from Strato (German company) with 300GB storage running Centos 7.

I have two domains ($familyname1.org, $familyname2.org) and provide email (postfix+dovecot+spamassassin+opendkim) and Nextcloud services for both. Rainloop for webmail, Nextcloud -is- a web interface, and I wrote a custom homepage at index.html that allows to choose between mail or cloud.
Family is quite happy. Currently we split the costs 50/50, but the plan is to make them pay for it entirely.

I just spent my Sunday afternoon writing backup scripts for the mail, etc and www directories. After securing ssh, setting up fail2ban and hopefully configuring Apache correctly I'm cautiously optimistic I won't get hacked too easily

wat
>>
>>62000604
You can find cheaper VPSes.
>>
>>61999279
Scaleway is best value
>>
>>62000617
Can you elaborate?
>>
>>62000635
My service provides 4x RAM, 4x HDD and 8x bandwidth for the same price as DigitalOcean.
Check out lowendtalk or lowendstock.
>>
>>62000688
And bet on start up companies that host in a hot ass basement of their parents house? Yeah, no.
>>
>>62000698
There are a lot of companies that operated for years already.
You can say the same about DO and other player and say that the right way is to use Azure, AWS, Google.
>>
>>61999454
I have the 10 bucks month lined plan and use it for everything.
I bought a cheap chromebook and installed archlinux everything it does is connect to the VPS
My VPS is my screenserver, emacs server, web page server, multimedia server, vpn and much more!
>>
>>62000789
Linode*
>>
>>62000295
>.org
>want to make family pay for your cheap project
christ anon
its costing you basically fucking nothing, are you underage or just neet?
get better domains than .org, like your appropriate cctld or .net
>>
>>62000789
when you say screenserver
you mean gnu screen right, and not X11

>>
>>62000944

>>61999279
>implying vps is the only option
never heard of cheap dedis I take it

>>62000295
forgot to mention you could have a far better deal getting a dedi from ikoula or kimsufi
only cpu is worse though still adequate 99% of the time, I offload low-bandwidth but high-cpu stuff to other machines if I feel its required
>>
Using a single vultr $2.5 VPS(512mb RAM) to host 4 sites.

Using a separate 128mb Ramnode VPS(paid something like $24/yr paid with BTC) to host some .onion scam sites.
>>
>>62001779
isnt it sold out
>>
>>62000881
>get better domains than .org, like your appropriate cctld or .net
even .tk aka hobo hosting gets acepted everywhere once vou set up spf and dkim.
>>
aruba and OVH
both are good
>>
>>61999279
I have a cloudatcost vps running baikal and ttrss.
>>
>>62001898
no shit .org works fine for email
it just doesnt make much sense for a family domain

>>62002698
>cloudatcost
kek, hows the service
I could get three years better service at a good provider for the price of their cheapest service
>>
>>61999454
Site hosting, Jenkins build server, OpenVPN server are what I used it for. Running torrent client is another popular option. Sometimes it's quite useful to have publicly accessible server if you want to fuck around with software.
>>
What are some decent VPS providers in Europe? Most of them are offering SSDs so it really limits the storage capacity.
>>
>>61999454
I have a cheap $15/year VPS that I mostly use for torrenting, file hosting, SSH tunneling and for hosting web app demos for my clients.

Sometimes you're forced to download a huge zip file but you only need a small file that's inside of it. In this case just ssh into the VPS, download the large file, unzip it and download whatever you need to your comp.
>>
>>62003943
How much disk space do you get for 15$/year and where?

>>62001815
Still available, at least in NY server
>>
>>62003840
Depends on what you're looking for. A lot of them also offer HDD servers with more storage capacity, or offer to add storage blocks after the fact.
>>
>>61999279
Aruba.it
>>
>>62003961
15 GB of space and 128 MB of RAM, but it's cool since I only use it to experiment. Bought mine from here : https://buyvm.net/openvz-vps/
>>
>>61999454
got one dedi running rtorrent + rutorrent, primary dns (yadifad), nginx for rutorrent + personal websites + anything potentially bandwidth-heavy including autobuilt binary aur packages, audio/video restreams, image host (linx), socks proxy (danted)

first vps takes care of znc, rss, secondary dns, xmpp, bookmarking, dovecot, pastebin + url shortener (nmnm), streaming to dedi, server monitoring/metrics, git server

then I have an hourly vps controlled by a script on the dedi that autobuilds the aforementioned aur packages and transfers them across to the dedi before shutting down again

>>62003840
ramnode
buyvm
edis
hostsolutions.ro if you need cheap storage

kimsufi for cheap dedi
>>
>>61999279

>romanian
>allows p2p, vpn, tor, etc
>cheap af. AF
>unmetered bandwidth
i've used the cheapest option ($1.5 a month) as a vpn for half a year and it's worked really well this far
>>
