Who cares how it looks? You are looking at the watch that ended the Swiss chronometer trials.

It is the only regular production movement to ever both win an astronomical observatory competition against all other mechanical entrants, and to receive certification from Neuchatel Observatory as Astronomical Observatory Chronometers. It was then sold to the public.

The last one of these to change hands was sold for ~$20,000.

>You are looking at the watch that ended the Swiss chronometer trials.

Quartz watches ended chronometer trials.

Seiko males like to make things up and ascribe mythical properties to their jap watches and you can of course fully expect either some long autistic rant or some link to some forum/article that declares this to be true (without evidence though, Seiko doesn't need any of that!).

Also here was a series produced Observatory chronometer made a few decades prior to that Seiko at the Kew Observatory that blew the fuck out of everyone with passing trials even harder than what the Swiss observatories had. But Seiko fags will never mention that. What they also won't mention is that chronometer trials also ended EVERYWHERE in the late 1960's/early 1970's including in burgerland, England, France, and the rest of Europe which apparently had nothing whatsoever to do with quartz watches but because a bunch of self-hating white soy-eaters who buy boring accountant's watches saw that their pet brand once won a competition in Switzerland.

>literally a quartz movement entered into the chronometry trials (which actually won it if I recall correctly)
>collaboration between 21 swiss companies
>"hurr quartz ended the trials"
Do you not see the contradiction here?
>>
>>61975828
Quartz ended the trials because there was no point to them anymore. Mechanical watches started cratering in sales, most of the Swiss companies ended up going bankrupt, and between all this (big surprise!) they don't want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars entering contests that now have no practical point nor do anything with increasing sales as people are starting to get access to cheaper and cheaper quartz watches that give better accuracy.

Again, NO EVIDENCE on your part.
>>
>>61975925
So exactly as much evidence as you've provided then. And no, conjecture doesn't count as evidence.
>>
>>61975925
Then why were the trials restarted a few years ago with the Swiss only stipulation if quartz made them pointless?

http://watchesbysjx.com/2013/06/explaining-seikos-legendary-history-in-swiss-chronometer-trials-with-live-pictures-of-its-landmark-astronomical-observatory-chronometer.html

>Aside from Girard-Perregaux, Seiko is the only company to have retailed observatory certified timepieces made in series. Other companies did sell observatory contest winners, or observatory certified chronometers in small series like the famed Rolex Kew ‘A’ of the forties. Seiko and GP made and sold them in relatively large quantities; GP sold over 600 of its high frequency chronometers in the sixties.

Note I said series produced, the Rolex Kews were not series production watches.

http://wornandwound.com/history-of-chronometers-pt-2-observatory-trials/

https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/the-beta-21
>After six years of research the first prototype, the Beta-1, was produced in 1966, using a 8192 Hz quartz oscillator mounted in an in-house integrated circuit. Shortly thereafter in 1967, the Beta-2 was produced and was awarded first prize at the "Concours Chronométrique International de l'Observatoire de Neuchâtel," setting a new record for accuracy over the test period of only .0003 seconds variation in rate per day (as opposed to the 3-10 seconds typical of wristwatch chronometers of the day).
OwO, what's this? The Swiss were perfectly happy to let a Swiss made quartz take top place in 1967, why then did they suddenly cancel all the contests a year later? Gee, I wonder?

>In Geneva Seiko proceeded to take fourth to tenth place in the wristwatch movement category, with first to third place occupied by the quartz Beta 21 movement fromCentre Electronique Horloger, an enterprise backed by the Swiss watch industry. That meant that the Seiko movements were the top finishers in the mechanical movement category.

>After Seiko’s victories in 1968, the Geneva observatory thencancelled its contests in 1968, ending the long tradition of Swiss observatory timing trials.

>But in2009 the Swiss chronometer contest returned.

>Organised by the great and the good of Swiss watchmaking, including theNeuchâtel cantonal government,COSC and the Besançon Observatory, the biennialConcours International de Chronométrie,or International Chronometry Competition, professed a noble aim. It wanted to continue the tradition of the chronometer contests of the 19th and 20th century, not just for movements, but for finished watches destined for the purchase by consumers.

>But amongst the rules of the contest, one governing the provenance of the timepiece stands out. It reads: “All parts used to build the movement must be made within Europe.”
Gee, I wonder why they have such a restriction? Perhaps it is the existential terror the Swiss still have that if Seiko was allowed to compete that they would get dumpstered again.

Why did they stop doing chronometer TESTING and certification at the Besançon Astronomical Observatory in France?

Why did they stop doing chronometer TESTING and certification at the Kew Observatory in England?

Why did they stop doing chronometer TESTING and certification at the Geneva Observatory?

Why did they completely stop doing certification, testing, etc. of chronometers in the United States?

Apparently white people are so insecure and incompetent that not only do they quite doing competitions, but they actually just shut down testing and certification of movements altogether, all at the same time, on the entire planet! I'm so glad Daini Seikoshi blew the top on this White fragility and destroyed the entire industry.

Of course it had nothing to do with the governments running these observatories ending funding for testing antiquated technology, or the fact that 95% of these companies were spiraling into insolvency and the last thing they had on their mind was getting expensive, lengthy certification that now had no value on the market, nope, it was all the power of DAINI SEIKOSHI.

>>
>>61976416
How many Swiss Chronometer Trials did they have in France, England, or the US? Oh right.

As has already been covered, Geneva and Neuchatel had no problem with a Swiss quartz winning the year before, yet suddenly in 1968 when Seiko decimated the Swiss suddenly all the competitions were suspended indefinitely, and when received today the rules are designed specifically to keep Seiko out.

I'm sure it's also a complete coincidence that Neuchatel ceased certifying watches at all after the production Seikos were certified, right?

Reposting from last thread.

Need some advice, my grandfather recently passed away and he left me his favourite watch (pic related). You can tell he wore it a lot because it is in a bit of a state, it needs a good clean (particularly the band) and such.
As well as getting it cleaned I figured I should get it serviced as I am led to believe its relatively old and has only ever had its battery changed by dubious watch guys at the local market. Where would be a good place to take it in (UK, Reading)? I understand goldsmiths do watch servicing but I figured I should ask as google is giving me bugger all.

Customer's Poljot is nearing completion. I haven't put it on the timegrapher yet, but I can see it has a fuckhuge swing, so it all looks good.

The date mechanism had some problems, it was weak and sometimes only moved the date wheel halfway. The wire spring of the date switching "claw" didn't push it far enough, bending it a bit gave it more travel, so the claw now gives a big fuck you slap to the date wheel teeth, correctly switching it every time.

I would expect to pay ~$300 for a chronograph service. Also, as long as you can find a glad decent independent watchmaker they should not have any problems servicing the SeaGull 1963.

a vostok would indeed be cheaper, although they arent the best movements to learn watchmaking.

i do service my own watches, but im spoiled with fancy tools and machines at school. after about half a year of watchmaking school i felt confident enough to service my own watches. naturally you break or lose stuff, its simply unavoidable, but you can learn a lot from it and you'll end up a better watchmaker in the end. you can also turn the things you break into projects trying te make them yourself. i broke the pallet fork pivot of a chronograph i was servicing for a friend. decided to turn it myself, it really is something else to see something you made doing its job, ticking away inside a movement.

There can only be one.
It is the dragon hand that tells you an eclipse is coming up since the alignment is along at ascending (dragon head) or descending (dragon tail) node.
>>
>>61980861
Despite knowing that's a complicated piece, I can't help but think the case & crown make it look cheap.
>>
>>61980792
>those commie shocksystems are so sick.
This one is one of those Incabloc knock-offs, that you have to slide out instead of lifting up. Not too bad really. Later slav watches all seem to have moved to in-house designs, sometimes inferior even. Maybe Incabloc attacked them for patent infringement, which could have banned these watches from being imported in the capitalist world.

>hows it running in sideways modes btw?
Amplitude drops a bit so it'll run faster, like +10-15s a day, so I set the dial up/down positions to be a bit slow to compensate. I'll check it again after a day when the oils have spread around a bit more.

How so? Not really trying to learn watchmaking (as in, the complete deal), but I'd guess you'd need quite a bit of understanding of how those things work.

>i do service my own watches, but im spoiled with fancy tools and machines at school. after about half a year of watchmaking school i felt confident enough to service my own watches.
Damn. But kinda expected for the full deal.
I'd assume adjusting it, I could easily do myself with some google-fu, but oiling a watch might already be quite risky, right?

Current service jobs are a Poljot, a "digital" Sicura, and an electronic balance Yantar wall clock. Also I got my own Amphibia taken apart for a cleaning.

Other jobs are two movement swaps (basic quartzshit that's more expensive to repair than to just swap out) and some other garbage that wants to fall apart.

That's the thing bro- everyone here probably owns a Seiko, except 95% of us aren't delusional enough to think buying a $5000 Grand Seiko 5 is somehow making us earn a PHD in horology. We also get that while some people may like the boring styling, the rest of us don't see how you can justify buying a $5000 seiko that looks like most sub $500 seikos.

We also aren't deluded into thinking that whatever watch we own, doesn't have a chink part or two inside of it. Even your nip overlord Seiko fags got blown the fuck out when SARB's were found to have chink cases.

in terms of watchmaking tools, curryshit is a good compromise between chinkshit and swisshit.

i use that caseback wrench. it flexes and the jaws get worn too easily, but it works decently.

I just wouldn't recommend chink/ curry srewdrivers or tweezers. Always strive for bergeon if you can.

Oh look, its the ellipsis using resident shitposter who spends all his time shitting up /wt/ defending Swatch Group shitters and knowingly and deliberately lying about Seiko and slinking out of the thread every time he gets dumpstered.

LIke the first time he tried to pretend that Seiko movements are impossible to service, and then after getting BTFO's isntead tried to claim the 6r15c is vastly inferior to a standard or elabore grade 2824: https://rbt.asia/g/thread/61438568/#61442917

Or the time he lied his ass off trying to suggest that Seiko was shit because an optical trick made it seem like the hands on a vintage Lord Marvel were misaligned, and then slinked out of the thread when it was conclusively proved he was lying his ass off: https://rbt.asia/g/thread/61588255/#q61589918

Or the time he tried to claim that the difficulty of producing a finish or the amount of handwork involved was not a fair measure of finishing quality when trying to attack GS finishing relative to Rolex, and then slinking out of the thread when it was pointed out to him that haute horlogerie would be of no value over Rolex then: https://rbt.asia/g/thread/61910727/#q61916731

I don't understand why you get offended at being called an horological pleb when your own post explicitly admits that the only criteria you care to judge watches on is their exterior aesthetic appeal and how much imagined "prestige" marketing has succeeded in imbuing into the brand name.

People who cannot distinguish between the technical merrits of watches and movements and their aesthetic appeal or branding are precisely horologocial plebs, by definition.

Virtually no one makes steel cased digital watches anymore, unfortuantely. If you really want a steel cased digital you would have to go vintage. If you are flexible on the steel cased aspect, there are lots of Casios that aren't much more expensive than the F-91 but have full electroluminescent backlights and 50m water resistance. What's your budget?

Case and dial implementation and design are an important aspects of a watch. Putting a Breguet double-tourbillon into a steel brick with a viewing window milled onto the top is not the same as some finely designed, aesthetically interesting case + dial.

This shouldn't have to be said to begin with, but a lot of you guys have non-meme autism and legit have trouble conceptualizing why no one outside of weebs even want these boring as shit steel day-dates. With the exception of the Snowflake (which I like), most of the Grand Seiko are styled like a fucking Seiko 5.

That would be Seiko 5 models and SKXs. All of their mid-range models use the 4r or 6r which do hack and handwind.

That's only true on the SKX and Turtle, and yes, it is bullshit and they should fix it.

Incidentally, here is a good comparison an anon made showing just hot big a jump in finishing their is from the lower mid-range SARB line to the upper mid-range SARX line.
