If a node is down for a while and has an out of date copy of the block chain will it just query one of the other nodes for it and use it as is or will the node perform all of the validation on all transactions that it missed itself?

I have no fucking idea how bitcoin works, but I know precursor projects that did similar shit died while shit predicated on human greed has been wildly successful. There have been collective computing projects where you could donate processing power to genetic decoding and protein folding and even art projects.
