Is it a good thing or a bad thing that a computer from 7 years ago is still perfectly usable today because improvements have stalled?
>>
I feel like my Phenom II X4 965 is reaching it's limit.
Either that or firefox gets more bloated than they'd like to admit.
>>
It means no perfect gf AI soon so it's a big deal

>perfectly usable
If all you do is shitpost and play 1.6, sure
>>
>>61954621
Improvements haven't stalled. Your old computer is just usable because you don't do anything that requires a lot of resources.
>>
>a computer from 7 years ago is still perfectly usable today
Maybe if your "work" only consists of shitposting on 4chan

Idk about you guys but my desktop from 2004 is still a good office machine, just a bit noisier
>>
What the fuck??? Why aren't you guys buying 4k monitors and new processors????
>>
I'm using a 10 years old computer and it's a pain in the ass to browse the web with that. 4chan works tho, so that's something. Plus, retro games.
>>

My E5450 still runs any game maxxed out
>>
Not true at all. Things like HEVC require better processors or hardware decoding, resource requirements for real-time video editing/encoding have increased dramatically due to increased resolutions and video codecs, web browsing in general is 80% bloat and ads so that needs more resources in general, vidya also needs more resources to run.

2010: i5-2500K + 8GB RAM = good

2017: R7 1700 + 16GB RAM = good

7? i have a 10 years old desktop standing around and still be able to play some modern games.
>>

Indie turds don't count
>>
Have a 2010 laptop, can play Arma 2, Cs:S, and most importantly Runescape. As for productivity it's FAR from sufficient, office 2010 and web browsing works perfecty. Video render is perfect too (except 1080p but res is 1366x768 anyway) and windows 7 is lighning fast on it. Even on my 2003 thinkpad I just installed minimal debian with mwm and the pc feels like it's from this year because it's so friggin' fast, except on 2017's bloated js-internet

I also have that CPU, and the only time firefox chugs is when a site has 1000 embedded Youtube videos on a single page.
>>
I think it's a good thing. Pressure is still on industry to be creative, but we're getting good use out of existing hardware.
>>
>>61954621
The shitposting machine I'm typing on now is 10 years old and it is perfectly fine. Not going to play GTA on it, have Playstations for that.
>>
>>61954831
What specs? I have a 10 year old laptop that held me over for a month of web browsing and youtube a while back.

Right now my most modern computer is a Thinkpad G40 from 2003.
Still perfectly fine with Shitposting and some other old shit like Empire Earth and AutoCAD 2005

I consider it kind of good, tech hardware wise hasn't stagnated too bad, but software hasn't gotten too bloated yet.
Firefox still works just fine, same as it does on a newer computer.

I7 860 + GTX 680 here, can still play most games on high or ultra settings, can still browse the web, can still watch movies and listen to music, can still handle Microsoft office, can still keep my room warm in winter with a hefty overclock that'll be turned down for the summer with no major performance loss.

What more would I want?
>>
I use a laptop from 2008 as my daily driver and it still works fine for most things other than firefox and palemoon which lag like shit (chrome works fine).
>>
web requirements have become less now that flash is being stomped out, thanks for one positive thing ever, smartphones

too nad 17 year old computers have little function outside of when you need a COM port and can't find the cable
>>
>>61954621
It's a good thing. It's giving us time to breath and learn to use tech more efficiently.
