Smh
It came with so many problems
>>
>>61953711
Meh, some, but nothing too terrible. The main problem is how many versions there are and how many subcontractors are taking their cut of the pie.

The actual planes themselves are decent at what they're meant to do, they're not dog fighters, they're sit back undetected and fire missles from 20 miles out before you even know they had radar lock on you.
>>
>>
>>61953773
Its funny watching people talk about things like this when their understanding is poor to hollywood-tier
>>
>>61953318
Most certainly not that. The F35 is an overpriced piece of shit that underpreforms. So instead of specializing and having several planes that are awesome at what they are made to do, we're gonna get one plane that does everything horribly.
>>
How can you be proud of something that you didn't create? Checkmate, """"patriots""""
>>
>>61953948
It's still going to fuck up any Russian plane with ease.
>>
>>61953948
There is a reason we still have the F22, it's our real fighter.
The F35 is a general purpose plane to use against most adversaries since they don't have any real air superiority to fuck with the F35 anyway.

The F22 is what you send in when you think someone might actually be able to shoot back.

Not him, but it's a good thing the actual air to air missiles the F35 carries have an operational range of 50-95 miles depending on the version.

To be honest the main thing to take away is the US uses advanced AESA radar on their fighters, both the F35 and F22, and this allows them to generally just sit back and take shots long before anyone can get in range.

China and Russia are the only two who might have a chance to get in somewhat close, but pretty much everyone else isn't getting close unless we allow it.

The F35A is $95M for the low production run, in 2018 the cost should actually come down to ~$85M per unit because of increased production reducing costs.

I'm talking about mid-air refuelling. Thrust vectoring and use of the F-35B's lift fan to ensure it stays in the air below stall speed is incredibly fuel intensive and pointless. The V-22 is capable of level flight above the F-35's stall speed, so both could remain in conventional flight mode while refuelling.

best part? there was competition between boeing/lockheed
boeing had the better jet, it had better engines, and was actually completed on time, where as the f35 is still being grounded constantly because it was rushed, still not finished on time.. buut some faggot thought it looked better, so they chose the more expensive and unfinished piece of junk f35.
>>
>>61956831
I specifically told you that it isn't useful enough to keep it flying; i.e that whatever utility comes from the gun is covered by other aircraft, which it is.

You didn't have a question, by the way. You simply stated that the F-35 isn't a good replacement. Your reasons for this false assersion are still a mystery.

Oh, and it hasn't been replaced because of politics, nothing else.

kind of like the f35 being constantly grounded even today.
yes originally the prototype had vtol issues, but unlike the 35 the finished product was finished on time and worked better than the f35 does today though.
hell they couldn't even display the 35 for testing when the deadline was reached because it was grounded over some issue. pilots have literally died solely because of the f35s rushed problems. and now we have a fuckhuge mess and loss of the best fighter jet crown

>The unit cost of the F-35 has been continually going down since the first batch
The F-35 program is a 1.5 trillion dollar program, a trillion dollars is one thousand billion. So even if they were to make 1000 of these aircraft, the total money spent would be 1.5 billion dollars each, so unit cost doesnt reallly mean anything, they already cleaned up on development costs

>>61957130
1.5 Trillion is the cost for everything over the entire service life (50 years) across all airframes including fuel and servicing.

So no, that money has not been spent.

I'm more proud of it's overall design and the nuclear reactors on board.

It's got tons of potential for whatever the USN needs over the next 50+ years.

It's current status is more or less irrelevant for something that will be in use for the majority of the next century.
>>
>>61957977
It's set to go into service in less than two years and they still don't have a way to fix their dysfunctional electric catapult, the "breaks after a dozen landings" arresting wires, or the crippling reliability issues with the reactor. It's just another money siphoning project for the military industrial complex that weaseled its way into the budget.

The F-35 isn't supposed to be superior to the F-22 in air-to-air combat, because it uses technologies that are approved for export unlike the F-22.

When you had the chance to tidy up the islands and the antenna farms, and you STILL made a hash of it - how could you??

That is what they all say. Remember a whole lot of careers depend on the F-35 being somehow salvagable. It is declared "operational" for a peculiar definition of "operational" but not as operational as to have been used routinely in the numerous conflicts around the world.

back when I worked in defence industry it was an open secret that huge acquisition programmes secured the general/admiral rank. RMA was a movement to counter that culture but they failed and their networking ideas have now been subsumed into big moohlas industry. just look at the BACN part that was sprung on the British who now have to dish out gigabucks to just communicate securely with F-35.

The L-M business model is now just like that of Accenture: low sell-in and then demand astronomical sums for add-ons that in reality are required, thus bypassing the need for tendering.

Yes, it is strange how Americans are so hung up om F-35 and are willing to polish this poo when there truly is an aircraft that demands respect, pic. very much related.

1960: Gary Powers shot down in his U-2
1962: Prototype A-12 took to the skies
1964: Blackbird first flight
1968: Blackbird hammered across any airspace with utter impunity.

The time frame and the innovations involved are impressive, like first titanium aircraft (not just small details), first supersonic cruise (not just short spurts) and more.

This was indeed the 1960's, the era where real men delivered results like this and the Moon landing. The company is the same but Kelly Johnson and his crew are long gone and F-35 is a long way away from success.
>>
>>61964671
You dumb fuck, that's literally a reverse engineered russian VA-111 from the 1970s.

There is nothing end game about it.

The US surface fleet would have seen it from 5-10 miles out, especially considering the torpedo operating range is less than 10 miles.

The AN/SPY-3 Radar systems on the Gerald R Ford class carrier or the Zumwalt Class destroyers have 200 mile range. They'd have been tracking whatever boat has that torpedo for the last 150 miles, and could shoot them down at any point considering most of the surface fleet has a variety of missiles that can be fired at much more extreme ranges than that shitty torpedo.

Not to mention the air craft carrier can easily deploy a few helicopters with some marines and 2 F35's to escort and you can capture whatever boat Iran decides to try and shoot a torpedo from, again, all of this could happen long before the boat would even get within firing range of the air craft carrier.

tldr; that torpedo would never threaten a US ship.
>>
>>61964853
and you call me a dumb fuck
you assume that a boat will actually carry it
you assume that the fleet will see it 5 to 10 miles
you assume that you understand what it means 200 miles per hours converted in meters per second
you assume that in a mere 58 seconds(time to cover the max distance)the fleet will recognise what it is how to deal with it bla bla bla bla
you assume i put the video to talk about iran while iran its the only one that actually has release an ACTUAL footage of it

>>
>>61965067
>you assume i put the video to talk about iran while iran its the only one that actually has release an ACTUAL footage of it
It was test fired twice, and none of the claims were confirmed.

The fact you blindly believe a shitty video from 2006 and you take iran at their word for the rest of it is just sad.

It's a copy of the VA-111 torpedo the russians have had since the 1970s.
If it were SUCH an end game weapon, why the fuck would the US not develop ANY counter measures to such a threat in 40-50 fucking years?

Most of the countries who signed on for the f35 joint fighter have pulled out because it's an utter turkey.

It's one of the largest military procurement of high tech manufacturing in our countries history pretty much.

I'm not shocked at the delays, especially given the hurdles faced with trying to tailor the aircraft for 9+ operators.
>>
>>61970445
I was doing interviews for people leaving the F35 project on a monthly basis. Then I saw a bunch of people leaving the CIA.

The F35 project is filled with incompetence and low skill labor. Of all the people I interviewed coming from F35 projects, every one of them was a "bad fit."

>It's one of the largest military procurement of high tech manufacturing in our countries history pretty much.
A totally, utterly and completely irrelevant argument typically used by those living off taxpayers.

Most of the tech could have been incrementally developed as retrofit for F-16, such as radar, optics and EW suite. Pentagon was persuaded by L-M to enter a high risk game where everything was new and cost had to overrun budgets.

>>61970777
>The F35 project is filled with incompetence and low skill labor.
I think this project will tank a lot of military careers. Big money acquisitions can lead to promotions. It can also dead end a career. F-111 comes to mind.

>>61971410
It's surely is a technological marvel. But i'm not sure you should be proud of America making that shit.

Missile defense systems are the biggest waste of money when it comes to military research. None of them work to this day despite the literal billions sunk since the Reagan days.
