>Linux will never have more than 5% marke-
Technically correct, you pedant.
>>61943506
Android's lifespan is limited. It will be replaced by something else. Something better.
>>61943571
Temple OS
>>61943506
Next year, when Google replaces Linux with Fuschia, no one will even notice the change. Yes, Linux is the base Android OS but it's not exposed or visible in any way.
>>61943582
HOO HOO HOO
I always feel like counting Android isn't fair.
It's not like people are choosing it because it is Linux. Are we counting all the routers that run on Linux as well? Should we also add iOS to UNIX's market share?
>>61943609
The linux kernel is exposed in android just as much as it is in gnu/linux. If gnu/linux counts as linux then android counts as linux as well.
>>61943630
>just as much as it is in gnu/linux
LOL... never programmed for Android I see.
PS: It's GNU/Android, not Android. Android is just a layer on top of GNU/Android.
>>61943506
The running joke is that next year will always be the year of the Linux desktop, not the year of the Linux server/smartphone/embedded device.
>>61943629
People didn't choose windows.
>>61943506
please refer to it as Android/Linux or Android + Linux.

>Angry Birds OS
>relevant
Umm no, try again sweetie.
>>61943714
Haven't we lost the server market?
When it comes to the quality of services, documentation and stuff, the desktop is far ahead of the server.
The number of people running a server vs the number of people who use a desktop is also pretty poor.
A win on the server market would mean setting up a server would be as easy as installing gentoo on the desktop.
>>61943742
Fair enough, but still, are we going to count routers and shit as well?
>>61943506
>Still has to pay Microsoft to release it's software.
Laughinggirls.
>>61943831
I guess.
For me, Linux has never been as important as the free software part.
I see free software as eternal, if a project is good enough to have a developer working on it, it will live.
More often, if there just is a single user of the project, it exist.
There are many software projects I have used which haven't had any developers working on it for years. It is usually fine if it isn't a security issue or the project is feature complete.
If it is proprietary software, it dies with the developers.
I whish people would make it free software before they kill the project so others can benefit from it, but copyright laws are screwed up and there is never an end date for these things.
It would be cool to have a "if you don't make an expansion within 25 years, publish the source code if you have it" clause?
Maybe people should fork over the source code in order to get the copyright license.

FuchsiaOS?
>>61943823
what did Linux lose it too.
>>61943694
You can reach kernel api. Elixir and alike do this. Of course webapps you wrote don't have to do anything with low level stuff.

Huawei don't have this problem.

My sides. MS is a POS company.

I'm really not sure OEMs are ready to give up Android for Fuchsia.
It just lacks stock terminal.

How would that even work? They have years of experience and an OS to show for it. Can a jungle caveman come up with something better in a day or something?

>next year
It's literally still on a hobby level. It will take them at least 2 more years to make it as functional as android, and half a decade to convince companies to adapt it. This will actually help Samsung since Samsung will continue to push Touchwiz, with a difference being that they'll remove all Google bloat and replace it completely with Samsung's apps. Not just Samsung, other companies too. And LineageOS is a proof that you don't need Google services to make your device functional so I doubt anything other than Google's devices will use Fuchsia for a long time.

You can setup a full centos server with a few clicks now

So pathetically desperate.
