/prog/ started it to make fun of Prolog and its sometimes excessive use of parentheses. The creators of Prolog are Alain Colmerauer and Philippe Roussel but they would refer to them as (((Colmerauer))) and (((Roussel))). Not sure who had the idea to make the Echoes add-on and why they chose that meme.
