It's great if you're using linux, since you can use the open source drivers (which work better than the closed source ones now too): http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=rx-vega-linux1

Yes, I know the article is two days old, but I didn't have time to read it earlier.

only thing I hate is that I missed the lower priced first batch.

They consume too much power.
>>
Because it doesn't preform any better than cards that are already a year old and costs the same. Why anyone would buy this over already proven technology is beyond my understanding. If you guys want to buy one of these wait for nvidia's next line up when they'll drop the price to something more reasonable.
>>
I'm an and enthusiast and was completely hyped for vega, but con its shit
Performance on par with 2 years old cards, priced too high, consumption over the roof
Nah mate, its a failure

Actually Vega 56 is clearly faster than the 1070, even moreso when both are overclocked.
>>
>>61935879
>new card price at old card performance and tard card power draw

>>61937600
So you get an extra frame or two? Why not just buy a used 1070 for cheaper and save money for something else in the build?
>>
>>61935879
Phoronix seems to be pushing pro AMD articles fairly often but the fact remains that if you play any steam games you shouldn't use AMD.

Joker didn't undervolt. Gamers Nexus got a +50% power offset and +180mhz overclock on memory to work at a mere 1.025v for a total card power consumption of 240 wats to hit a Firestrke score of ~22k (which should yield similar in game performance to Joker's overclock).

because it's not 7nm nor Navi
>>
>>61937609
Honestly all the signs had been there for along time that Vega wouldn't be that good. But Driver fixes have a chance to give it max 20% performance gain as its performance is all over the place with different games. Some place its pathetic some place its great and more often its just on par with 1070. The Vegas got a lot of new fancy shit put into it and it doesn't seem to be utilizing them and itself correctly. It looks like some tweaking need to be done but it doesn't even look like and knows what the fuck they've created.

If they prefer proprietary then why don't they just use windows?
>>
>>61937978
this is a mystery
>>
>>61935879
Because it does not beats the 1080ti on gaymes for 20usd
>>
>>61937642
Why specifically steam? It seemed to perform fine according to the benchmarks.
Also, the pro-AMD articles might be due to how pro-open-source AMD is compared to Nvidia.
>>
>>61937978
Because Windows is shit, but the Nvidia drivers are decent. Why is it always some black and white morality with freetards? I use Linux not because it's FOSS, but because it suits my use cases. Who cares about GNU or Stallman? If you need a proprietary program, use that, if an open source program makes more sense, use that.
>>
>>61938024

It barely beats the 1080 at a higher price, the ti is not even close
>>
>>61938064
What do you mean black and white? I mean, open source vs proprietary is pretty black and white. Hard to find any grey between those two.

One of the biggest reasons for why I use linux is because it's FOSS honestly.
>>
>>61938064
There's no reason to use Linux because it's pretty much garbage for anything but servers

Given their history with proper drivers and development tools, who knows how long it will take them to actually get these cards performant. Not to mention, they don't seem to have even enabled many such features yet they have time to write custom ROMs for shithead miners who should write it themselves.

>>61937653
Can someone explain to me why brainlets keep on w/ the open source driver meme as if they do anything with the fucking source code or even know how to understand the code.

Dude you can't run a fully open source stack with AMD because the firmware is proprietary, only Nvidia allows you to do that.

Furthermore the driver support on AMD is shit and some benchmarks showing improvements in performance, while a good improvement, don't really address the issue that the support is just not up to par when compared with the proprietary nvidia drivers.
>>
>>61938337
Are you sure? IIRC Nvidia has required binary blobs for a long time, and AMD has required them since a few generations ago.
>>
GTX 1080 is almost 100$ cheaper than Vega 64 where I live, shits fucking pointless
>>
>>61938400
100% sure.
Nvidia firmware was reverse engineered and the functionality was replaced very poorly by the open source drivers.

The AMD open source drivers still depend on proprietary firmware blobs to be running.
>>
>>61937758
how can you detect one without trying it? anything to look out for?
>>
>>61937555
Gamers Nexus just did a video where they compared how much more a year a Vega 56 will cost you over a 1070 and it came out to an average of 52 dollars if you're running the card for 12 hours a day @ load performance.

More realistically, most people will only be running their card on load performance for maybe 4 hrs a day, and the cost for that is 24 dollars a year more than the 1070.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4X5aIyBa0gs

24 to 38 dollars more a year extra in electricity bills is nothing to a self-proclaimed "gaming enthusiest," and certainly shouldn't stand in the way of you getting what you want.

>Dude you can't run a fully open source stack with AMD because the firmware is proprietary, only Nvidia allows you to do that.
HA
Impossible for nvidia too

It beats the 1080 Ti in many workstation benchmarks, even beating out the Titan Xp in LuxMark.
https://techgage.com/article/a-look-at-amds-radeon-rx-vega-64-workstation-compute-performance/

It's probably fair to say that the Vega64 is a workstation powerhouse that can also game at GTX 1080 levels, which is pretty damn impressive.
>>
>>61940441
How's performance vs actual workstation cards with signed workstation drivers?

It's a mixed bag. In the cases where the Vega 64 did very well, it often blew past all of AMD's other workstation offerings, and at times, even besting those from Nvidia such as the Quadro P6000. A couple of times, you'll find it towards the bottom of the pack, such as in SPEC benchmarks, but the revierwer blames unoptimized drivers because of how well the Vega 64 performed in the rest of the other benchmarks.

These were the other workstation cards it was compared to and the drivers installed on them:

>AMD Radeon RX Vega 64 8GB (Radeon 17.30.1051 Beta)
>AMD Radeon Pro WX 7100 8GB (Radeon 17.Q2.1)
>AMD Radeon Pro WX 5100 8GB (Radeon 17.Q2.1)
>AMD Radeon Pro WX 4100 4GB (Radeon 17.Q2.1)
>AMD Radeon Pro WX 3100 4GB (Radeon 17.Q2.1)
>NVIDIA TITAN Xp 12GB (GeForce 385.12)
>NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB (GeForce 385.12)
>NVIDIA Quadro P6000 24GB (Quadro 385.12)
>NVIDIA Quadro P4000 8GB (Quadro 384.76)
>NVIDIA Quadro P2000 4GB (Quadro 384.76)
>>
>>61935879

It is butthurt gayming-tards that hate it because it failed to be a 1080Ti killer which would have forced a price war at the high-end gaming market.

AMD simply cannot get enough units into channel. It is the HD 5850/5870 shortage all over again.
>>
>>61935879
just a further reason they should make all new video cards brick themselves if you try to mine on them. fuck the tax-evading scum

it can compete just fine.. if you dont mind that it draws 40% more power than a Nvidia equivalent, so youre paying more monthly depending how much you use it.

thats the only drawback I can think of (and AMD driver support)
>>
>>61936619
Fuck off, faggot. I use AMD on Linux, and it works fine with the latest kernels
>>
>>61938181

It costs the same as a 1080ti.

I love amd but Jeez.
