If you want help:
>Assemble parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560 - poverty-tier builds
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games
>Vega NOW.

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.
>>
What Gsync monitors does /pcbg/ recommend for pairing with a 1070?

I'd prefer to stay away from the ones using the 27" high refresh rate IPS panels, due to their bleeding edge (no pun intended) nature causing bad QC. Unless that's no longer an issue?
>>
are any used xeons good for gaming? Is a dual xeon build with one (maybe with some extra cores from the first cpu) passed through to a windows vm a good idea?
>>
>>61930610
I just upgraded my lame Bloomfield (i7-920, C0 stepping) with a $20 Xeon (X5650) from China.

6 cores and 12 threads at 4.6GHz is not bad at all for modern games, even with ~30% less IPC than modern architectures.
>>
>>61930610
the old 4c/8c xeon are just I7s with more pcie lanes. So there's no reason you can't use them for gaming. the issue is finding a decently priced mobo for them. Because the main reason old xeons are cheap is because people don't have mobos to use them with and the mobos you can buy are just too expensive to justify sticking to an older generation instead of buying something or just a mainstream cpu
>>
out of curiosity, what is the best ghetto build? based on new peripherals, the best performance per dollar. I was thinking about something like g4400/g4560 + GTX 1050/1050Ti + 8 GB of RAM on msi b150m grenade mobo.
>>
>>61930671
>out of curiosity, what is the best ghetto build?
a used prebuilt with a good processor, then toss in a graphics card
>>
>>61930668
My S.O.S. got digested in last thread.
>>
Too early to ask for a consensus on vega?
>>
>>61930682
Exactly this. Go to a salvage company or recycling center and you will find tons of old business systems just sitting around. Find one that has what you want, take a usb flash drive with linux on it and ask to test shit there.
>>
>>61930682
this desu

you can get an i5-2400 system for like $30 and throw a 1050 in there. bam, modern games at medium to high settings.

>>61930706
housefire
>>
>>61930706
Not many people have it but generally it has meh gaming benchmarks so far but great compute. If you do GPGPU or OpenCL stuff then they're really good. If you're just gaming then I would avoid them unless you're on Freesync
>>
Are there any Vega benchmarks yet?
>>
>>61930742
plenty
>>
>>61930742
Vega 56 is roughly equivalent to a 1070 in games, Vega 64 is a bit less than a 1080 on average in games. Much higher compute on both compared to 10 series though. Also pretty high power consumption but apparently you can undervolt them and reduce power consumption quite a bit with minimal FPS impact.

Running this on win7, is this undervolted? I'm not sure if the auto voltage feature is even supported on that OS
>>
>>61930698
if anything, I'd spend more on the motherboard. say an MSI B350 Tomahawk or PC Mate
>>
>>61930781
>>61930781
Also sometimes when loading up a lot of applications the system runs a bit choppy (very short audio loops and such) but i think that's because of the samsung hdd or single 8gb ram stick even though i'm not 100% sure
>>
>>61930781

your cpu is heavily undervolted and underclocked.

Thank you, updated with monitor and already purchased pieces.

Built with the pieces available to me in Italy, prices really different from the US in extremely enigmatic ways.

I am probably overbudget by 200-300$, is there some alternative to what I selected that allows me to spend a little less? Sadly I need to buy it now, so can't wait for gpu prices to go down more...
>>

You sure? Those are the factory settings afaik, i didn't change a thing

Anyways what are some good settings to throw in via ryzen master which don't make me lose my warranty or at least make it likely i won't have to use said warranty in the first place
>>
>>61930964
>>61930964
Or is it just enough when i set the profiles manually via the msi gaming app/windows power schedule options? I don't really feel comfortable changing shit in the UEFI and afaik it doesn't make any difference where you change it from
>>
>>61930964
Don't set your CPU Vcore above 1.35V, don't set SoC voltage above 1.15V. Should be fine with that, you can probably crank memory voltage up to 1.3V-1.5V if you want, DDR4 can handle that just fine.
>>
>>61930981
>>61930981
Yeah i think i read somewhere that faster memory makes ryzen werk faster too or something

Thing is i have the stock cooler on that thing so i don't want to stress it too much either so that it lasts me for a couple years down the road at the very least without me having to change the cooler or thermal paste every other month
>>
>>61931025
The two 4-core complexes at the heart of Ryzen (or 4 with Threadripper) connect via what AMD calls "Infinity Fabric", which runs at the same (base) speed of your RAM
So faster RAM means your processor works better/faster with multitasking and/or multi-threaded programs

What's the consensus on seagate HDDs. I keep seeing conflicting reviews about them failing after a few months.

Are HGST He6 HDDs supposed to be really fucking loud?
I recently got a bunch of 6TBs in "like new" condition (<20 starts) and there are two issues on all of them: clicks on idle every few seconds and extremely loud seeks. Not even my 10yo samsungs make that much noise and vibration.
Smart is fine and HGST tool does not detect any issues, during long linear operations they are quiet enough.

The BIOS comes pre-installed on your motherboard
When you're powering on for the very first time, you'll need to go into the BIOS and tell it to boot from whatever installation media you're using for your OS (usually, this will be your optical drive)

And then after you have finished installing Windows, for example, you'll need to go into boot on your next startup and have it point to your C drive instead

put your OS on a USB stick - this is the modern way to do it, plenty of instructions online. put in the USB stick, boot up, and follow the onscreen instructions. the BIOS may notify you that you need to tell it where to boot to (and give you a menu) or it may just handle it automatically. either way it's intuitive with an IQ above 50
>>
>>61933811
don't mind overclocking, however the ludicrous amount of cores on the threadripper series could be very useful to me.

I have a cabinet i'm going to mount a plastic panel to and mount the motherboard onto that. It's on wheels and the whole pc can easily be taking out of it.
I am planning to watercool the CPU and GPU, altho not custom, will be AIO loops, since i don't want to deal with any more complications. Have had good experience with AIO loops

desu you should just figure out what part "died" and replace it if you need to get back online quick. if there was some mysterious full system death i'd be EXTREMELY wary of reusing the PSU that was a party to that

but without knowing much about your use case if you are within the huge part of the gaming+work bell curve an R5 1500x should be more than enough especially if you're gonna OC. it's literally right there in the OP tbqh

I just built a new pc with basically the standard (r5 1600 / 16gb ram ) with the 1060gb.

I run windows 10 and re-enabled windows 7's photo viewer because the photos app is a piece of shit. The problem is that win 7 photo viewer somehow has a startup lag of ~5 seconds which i find incredibly annoying, and the other computer i did this to does not have the lag (i7 laptop)

both have ssd's running the os/viewer and are trying to access images on a WD caviar blue 1tb, the difference being that the laptops is a 5400rpm 2.5 while the desktops is a 7200 3.5

the thing is vega64 is actually going to eat into the 1070 market and vega56 is going to go after the 1060 market. Once the prices settle and especially when the mining craze goes into hibernation for a while

Also mining will in the long term be good for us, games just aren't pushing technology anymore, the triple A industry is a trainwreck, there are too few releases and they suck. If you have people buying 50 or 60 cards every generation that's a hell of a lot of eventual ebay listings. There could be a cheap hardware golden age coming where the minefags keep having to upgrade to be competitive and we keep getting their old stuff. Or even if you don't want their old stuff manufacturing should eventually ramp up to compensate.

It is good. Look at reviews. Since you care about games, pay careful attention to minimum framerates i5s get compared to r5s. Even the single-threaded performance is good. Not as good as Intel's k-skus because of the lower frequency, but certainly competitive.

>Are more mods like Jagged Alliance 2's 1.13 mod, that makes a great game even better or are most mods like Oblivion's anything mod that makes a shit game slightly less shit.
I wouldn't know, I generally don't go looking for mods for games I don't like. Mostly, I think, it's a factor of how popular the game is and how easy it is to mod. Bethesda games are popular and easily moddable, so they naturally get tons of mods. And of course, old games tend to accumulate more mods over time, so something like Morrowind or VtM: Bloodlines has plenty of mods, some of them even good.

>1050 vs 1050ti
Am I wrong for thinking the 1050 is a better deal for price to performance ratio?
>>
>>61935490
I've used both and own the Oculus. Only because it was $400 cheaper. The touch controllers are nice, but lack the touchpad. Not sure the analog stick is an adequate replacement.

The built in headphones of the Rift are really nice, not an audiophile or anything, they sound fine, it's mainly just one less cable to get tangled up. Putting on the Vive and then putting on headphones is kinda annoying. Also, the Vive lighthouse tracking system seems much better. In order to get a similar setup with the Rift, you need a buttload of USB ports. Annoying, that. If price were no object and I had wireless headphones, I would've gone with the Vive. But it is and I don't, so Oculus.

Anyway, they're both about the same. Get whichever one is more affordable.

>did you update the BIOS?
Yes, latest version (A60) post AGESA 1.06 from this very month.
Also, just changed the battery, done a complete poweroff but bios persisted (which was kinda weird) but I'll have more info tomorrow after 8-10 hours off.
Couldn't even set my RAM to 3200 (QVL).
I now feel bad for those early adopters, shit's messy

I don't know but I'm satisfied with mine.

Granted I'm not a huge-on gamer yet, coming from a GT 630 there was nothing to lose.
The passmark averages for the 1050 and 1050ti are 4407 and and 5744, respectively.
My 1050 (with R5 1600) benched around 6.5k, what?

So in my case, barring the 2GB less of RAM I do believe I got a better deal.

I had 1055T and that shit was bottlenecking my GTX960.
So yeah, you're probably 10-15fps behind of what you could reach even at "sub 75fps" ultra or some shit.
I understand that you don't have the >>NEED<< of upgrade, but as soon as you can, do it.
I just personally did 'cuz mobo died after 7,5years of 16h/day of work. PII 1055T+16GB is alive tho as an office computer now.

Unless you have a specific reason to, you don't need to stay up to date.

Get up to date with the now, pick your parts, and build it.

are there sites that list CPU's based on bottlenecking of a GPU you pair it with?

also is there other sites like game-debate which list the ACTUAL hardware requirements to run a game at recommended settings vs the overbloated "developer recomended hardware"

several reasons, cost and space requirement being one and preferring to sit down and relax when playing with minimal setup time.
I have a Vive HMD myself, it is an interesting piece of technology but not comfortable enough to play long sessions with.
Very uncomfortable to lay in a bed/couch with if you want to chill and watch some movies in a virtual theatre.
Weight and size is a factor as well, it isn't light enough yet to forget you are wearing it.
I find myself using traditional monitor far more since it is so much quicker and simpler (you just slide in your chair and at most put on a pair of headphones), however the major factor for not using it much is the lack of exciting content really.
