>know a little bit of programming, self-taught
>C, python, java, c++
>doing nothing but stupid little personal projects in my free time
>always wanted to make a piece of software that people would actually use
>first language was java so every time I try to write something I always end up making a sloppy, overcomplicated OO piece of shit
>tried to learn functional programming but got nowhere

Every time I start a project now I just jump right in with some stupid object models and once it gets too complicated I scrap it. This is so frustrating. I love programming, but I get so frustrated with the gap between where I am now and the stuff that professional programmers actually do. How do learn this stuff on my own?

The worst is that even though I get so frustrated with myself, I keep coming back to programming because I know deep down that I actually enjoy it.

Do any anons know this feel?

Functional programming is a bad meme anyway.

this one is hardest for me

Your expectations for what you can do is too high there's no way the first program you write is going to be something people use it just isn't if you see a project is getting to complicated then downgrade the scope of said project so that it isn't impossible for you to manage eventually you well get better and if you try hard enough maybe you can get somebody to use your program for something it'll take many years of trying but prescience is key think of it this way how many authors first book was super successful probably not very many and books have been around a lot longer then programing so just keep trying it's not over tell you give up

Enroll in some math or cs classes at a local college or something. I was self taught for a while too and never accomplished anything until I did that.

The structure and plan can help people, there are reasons why universities have existed for thousands of years.
