Unity is better. It had a reasonable layout (quick launch icons that double as window buttons) with some unique features like a global menu in a titlebar.

It wasn't really. Unity was literally a GNOME skin. Also, there's no need in making a billion DEs when one can be made to look like another. I hope pantheon and MATE get abandoned next. That way more people would come to aid in development of relevant DEs.
There will also be a small minority working on Unity 8.

Once you resize the launchbar and move it to the bottom - Unity becomes the best DE.
It has best font rendering out of the box, best implementation of titlebar in any system, great search for documents, pictures, etc.

You can also entirely recreate this in GNOME with even more customisation options.
>>
So they're trying to make GNOME usable by default. Good for them. I still prefer KDE.
>>
>>61900139
Really KDE and GNOME (I guess xfce or some other very light weight DE too) should be the only options. KDE is customisable enough for pretty much any DE experience with Qt apps, same goes for GNOME with GTK apps. The experience of Mate, Pantheon, Budgie and all the others can be achieved in GNOME through extensions.

When you maximize the window - titlebar with buttons integrates with a shell and shows you nice dropdown menu when you point your mouse at it.

the titlebar with panel integration in unity is god-tier.

Huge, wasteful, titlebars are one of the biggest with Linux DEs right now.
>>
>>61900392
This and those fucking corners are pretty much my only beefs with gnome, although big ones. It's such a pain it makes it unusable for me, at least while having much nicer alternatives like unity or kde(that does whatever I want, there is always an option somewhere). Kde much more now that computing power is not an issue and I don't really mind if it boggles up 30% of my resources. It would be nice if this was fixed (is it? been a while since I used it, last time was kde4), but not really necessary.
>>
>>61900350
For one, it by default stops you from installing proprietary shit. But this can easily be fixed.

>>61900396
Because they're retarded. KDE is objectively better than GNOME and they should have used it instead. It can even be themed to look like Unity.
I guess they didn't want the DE to look different by default, in case it shits itself and resets preferences after an update. And also their staff is trained on GNOME/Unity. KDE would just mean they have to get more people in to help them and the whole point of ditching Unity was to spend less money on the DE development.

>>61900488
KDE plasma was very light and fast when I was on KDE Neon. They really improved it.
>>
>>61900488
Speaking of corners, why can't gnome do them well? If it is such a central thing (last time I used there was no default option to turn it off, I had to download those tweak tools), at least do them well, like macOS does. On mac, if you accidentally touches a corner, the pointer will be repelled from it and it will only activate if you insist on it.
>>
>>61900071
It's sad how Canonical decided to abondon the best DE enviroment. It's the only one I didn't have to waste time ricing beyond moving the launcher to the bottom, checking "minimize on click", and installing a theme.

The other DE that gives me the least amount of problems is cinnamon.

>>61900113
>>61900279
Unity takes up less space when the launcher is set to autohide. And then when a window is maximized, you can still see the time and your notifications with the thin taskbar on top.
>>
>>61900458
>>61900392
>>61900488
GNOME devs do have a reputation for being very controlling with their UI philosophy but they do at least follow that philosophy themselves. But hey, the thing with GNOME is that it's fully customisable.

Firstly, GNOME's own apps don't have titlebars at all. Secondly, their philosophy views traditional application menus as antiquated. The issue is that other devs aren't following their philosophy (yet) and really, why should they? But again, GNOME is so customisable that these issues can be entirely removed. Want global menus? Install the global menu extension. Want the titlebars to merge with the top bar? Install maximus or any of the other similar extensions. Think titlebars are too big? Make them smaller in gnome tweak tool, install a different theme, or remove them altogether.

GNOME defaults suck yes, but it can all be easily changed just by installing things straight from the gnome extensions webpage.
>>
>>61900571
I think Ubuntu moving to Gnome is the greatest thing for gnome users, Ubuntu will without a doubt add a lot of patches and extensions to gnome, to make it behave a lot more like unity, when that happens I think we'll end up with one of the best Linux DEs ever
>>
Windows fag here. I have tried install ubuntu (no bully pls) but I just couldn't get around no drivers for Novideo and g-sync and also I like playing vidya and using some windows programs that I don't think are in repositories.

So my question is, with my usage profile should I switch to a linux distro, if so what kind, and also what good guides are there for learning console commands/install windows and proprietary drivers.

Arch seems interesting but I am not a programmer so I would need to be spoonfed lel
>>
>>61900557
Install maximus, install the global menu extension, install dash to dock.

Hurr durr why do I have to customise it? Sure, if there's a DE that does everything you want exactly how you want it then use that. The trouble comes when you have a million different DEs each trying to cater to exactly what each small demographic of users wants. Why not have one DE that can be customised for the exact experience you want? This is better for users and developers as the developers only have to target one platform, and the users have a richer selection of customisation choices.

Yes, it is too bad really. I also use CAD software and was disappointed that even after all these years linux support was still bad. I use CATIA and it seems to be ok, not great, in wine, but I haven't tested it yet. Soon. But it's not so bad in a VM, to be honest. My 2011 laptop could do it, a VM will do it in a breeze. Same thing with other simulation software. Unless you are doing some very heavy simulations every day all the time, for basic work VMs, it all else fails, will do just fine. And if you are doing lots of heavy stuff all the time, then my guess is you should have a dedicated machine for that (although if you are doing that, I'd advise against using windows even more. I wouldn't want my sensitive work being compromised because microsoft decided to want to know what porn you like).

It's a small price to pay for being free from the botnet.

I could just run solidworks/autoCAD in a VM and be done with it, but like you said, Micro$oft would sure love to get a whiff of that sweet sensitive information

Yeah, no. KDE is the best DE, followed by Xfce and GNOME. LXQt will probably also be good.
>>
>>61901136
Mostly ubuntu or other debian derived distros simply because when some company decides to support linux they usually distribute it in .deb packaging, so it is usually much more convenient. A stable one is more preferable too, things usually break when upgrading distros, so either an ubuntu LTS or a debian. And then you choose between DEs the one you like best. Right now, I'd use ubuntu 16.04, because I once had trouble installing graphics drivers for debian and other non-free software. So, yeah, either ubuntu if you like unity or kubuntu if you prefer kde.

For running the VM, run it in W7 if the program still supports it (it usually does unless microsoft has really taken its time to make sure it doesn't), or run the vm without network access.

Obviously, but why the fuck is he blaming it on mate?
>>
Gnome 3 is shit.

Still no OpenSSL 1.1.0 even though it's in sid...?

I'm running artful on a notebook at the moment, but the transition isn't too smooth right now. Both Wayland and Mir ran like shit and Gnome3 is heavy, so I switched to Xfce and haven't looked back - lightyears more responsive on low-end hardware.

I guess it'll be okay but I'd suggest skipping it for 18.04.

Did you even use it? It works like a charm.

Unlike with gnome I got a pretty weird bugs moving files with nauilus. It was probably cuz the heavy patching fir unity I guess...

Neon constantly broke some shit on me because of the outdated packages along with up-to-date KDE.
For example one day the entirety of Libreoffice wouldn't be themed anymore because their GTK theming bridge was changed somehow. No such problem on a full rolling release distro.

Help. Need Linux distro for dad!
>>
>>61902762
Then get manjaro, Manjaro's KDE version is the best looking KDE setup you can get out of the box, still, it's very unstable, but that's just KDE being KDE

It doesn't work nearly as well as Unity's.

whats the fucking point having the date and time in middle of the menu bar and ditching the OS X style global menu?

linux ui designers are literal shit

Someone should just create a good explorer clone for gahnoo/loonix. It's far and away the best graphical shell regardless of what you think about winblows as a whole.
>>
>>61902503
No, I'm saying it's irrelevant because I'll never use MATE. It's there, explained.

>>61902627
Because no other DE does this.
>>
>>61902708
Kubuntu. KDE neon crashes a lot.

>>61902671
Yes. After an update it literally removed all drop down menus from the file manager on my PC and I got stuck with 3 "File" drop down menus, all with the same options.

>>61902411
>>61902503
I got this on Unity as well. Though not that severe. It's just annoying. Radeon R7 360. It's a "new" GPU but I think it counts as old since it doesn't have AMDGPU Pro drivers.

Is there a good way to get a taskbar in gnome panel?
I tried the window list extension, but it just adds another panel with it and I want it to be in the single panel. I also tried the window list mod extension which basically does it but isn't maintained and now it removes everything else from the panel.

Long time Ubuntu user, I tried GNOME on 17.10 alpha, it is so shit, why are they doing this? At least we have 5-6 years or so before we really need to ditch LTS and even then I probably won't switch and do an XP.

GNOME is so shit and amateurish compared to Unity. Plus the settings are even more locked down.
>>
>>61904766
Unity 8 is still developed by the community. It might be operational in 5 years. As another anon said, you can make KDE look and function like Unity in under half an hour.
>>
>>61904766
I like GTK3 style applications but their "flagship"desktop sucks. That's why there's so many forks of it.
