For a writer in the 80s and 90s, a mac is the obvious choice. He needed word processing and back then mac did the office suite well.
Also, he didn't 'find' the meaning of life. Deep Thought found the answer to the meaning of life, the universe and everything to be 42. Then Earth was created to find the question, which ended up being "What do you get when you multiply six by nine?"

The late 90s, early 00s iMacs were pretty good for their time. They weren't powerful compared to cheaper PCs (like apple products today)
But they were cozy and were good simple computers with Mac OS 9 (the last good Mac OS) .
The worst thing about them were the hockey puck mouse that came with the earlier versions
