What if I don't want windows 10? Windows 7 is already becoming outdated (and vulnerable to malware through exploits that are no longer patched) But I don't want windows 7 filling my computer with bloatware and shit to spy on me. I don't need Microsoft falling to my dick pics and 2 Teribytes of furry anime faggot porn. I don't need my computer slowed down by all of its fucking background applications. Not to mention Cortana... fucking impossible to completely uninstall. I would change to Linux, but it's not compatible with many applications and video games and even if I can make it compatible with wine games still are slower than on a windows. Fuck. I don't know what to do.
>>
>>61872623
installed 8.1 the other day. breath of fresh air. 10 ltsb is actually ok too. im in same boat as you tho. if it wasnt for shit like pubg id be on linux.
>>
>>61872646
I remember trying win 8. It wasn't so bad, doesn't it also have bloat ware? I never checked before going back
>>
Windows 8 is just shittier windows 10. They both have the same bloatware, except Windows 8 doesn't have the start button.

The "tile" interface is absolutely atrocious, but there isn't much you can do about it, sadly.
>>
>>61872698
Damn. What if a group of developers took the discontinued windows 7 and started updating it themselves? Would there be legal issues? Would Microsoft be a cunt and shut it down...
>>
>>61872623
>I would change to Linux, but it's not compatible with many applications and video games
Its a catch 22, there won't be software and games on Linux if nobody uses it.
The only way to break the cycle is to switch to Linux and find alternatives to the things you want, then maybe the developers will take notice. It wasn't that long ago that the thought of Valve supporting Linux, or having native games from SquareEnix on Linux was unthinkable.

>even if I can make it compatible with wine games still are slower than on a windows
Wine's performance depends greatly on your hardware and the drivers you're using.
Nvidia cards with their proprietary driver can only really manage about 70% of the performance as on Windows due to the way the wrapper works as it translates high level Direct3D 9 calls to OpenGL 3 which then goes through Nvidia's GL driver.
AMD cards on the other hand can with the open source driver get to about 98%+ the performance of Windows since there's a native implementation of Direct3D 9 written on top of Gallium.
In the future vk9 ( https://github.com/disks86/VK9 ) or something like it will probably replace the outdated wrapper.
>>
Windows 7 is great, but is lacking in hardware support for newer CPUs.
I would recommend going with windows 10 Enterprise ltsb. It's the least botnet version you can get, and also the least bloated.
>>
>>61872847
Very good points I'll keep all this in mind
>>
>>61873074
Maaaan. But I want absolutely no bloatware and botnet association lmao

>>
>>61873074
its no longer an issue, someone found a workaround that lets you update on newer cpus
>>
>>61873074
Too bad we can't get the Chinese version that has all the spyware that Microsoft says isn't in it, removed.
>>
>>61873144
Lmao fuckin install shit tons of malware behind our backs for all we know. I mean.. if they got a good reputation going I would trust them, but they could still be shut down by microsoft if the .tor website is discovered :/ it would have to be too secret. But then the developer would quit cuz it would be hard for everybody to find and download the updates. It's a big mess

I had the same problem when going from XP to 7. Namely I played this shit all the time but it didn't work in later versions of Windows.
>>
>>61872623

Just upgrade you fucking retard. There are anti-telemetry applications available and they do a good job. Your computer also isn't bogged down by background applications if you just uninstall them and manage what you have open. Again, there are plenty of powershell scripts and programs that will do all of this for you. It's really not that hard.
>>
>>61873266
You're wrong there, mini-satan.
>>
>>61873302
I was considering this. It's very true there are scripts that automatically remove and keep applications from reinstalling, but they just seem to come back. I'm sure the Microsoft group are trying their best to keep their cutting edge software on your pc.. if you like it or not

wut
>>
>>61873372
Very true
>>
>>61873378
It's easier to break into a computer when it has a older Discontinued OS. Because once backdoors, exploits, exc. are found they are not patched.
>>
Windows 10 is pretty great and they fixed metro
>>
>>61873348
No emulator supports it even to this day. Not dropbox, not wine, nothing I tried worked except installing XP in a VM lol.

F.

Point is though if you switched to Linux you'd realize you don't need most of the programs you thought you need since your workflow would be different.
>>
>>61873481
>dropbox
I meant DOSBox
>>
>>61873466
I'm just considered with the bloatware eating up my already slow computer speed. And the "not spyware" that Microsoft uses in applications. I know these can be disabled and unistalled with scrips, but it's difficult with the updates. The people who update the scrips could stop at any time
>>
>>61873429
They're still patched if big enough of a problem and affecting enough users. Unfortunately, most non-updaters also don't actually follow through with thorough update maintenance like they should and instead disable all updates.
See: Wannacry on windows 7
>>
>>61873481
I guess I could install Linux for private use then for all my Gaming needs I'll install a windows 10 (remove as many bloat apps as I can do I can get at least acceptable performance) on a virtual machine.. this is probably going to be my solution
>>
>>61873543
I'll check it out. I only disable auto updates because I like to read what's in the update and make sure it doesn't catch me off guard when I'm afk lmao
>>
>>61873569
If you're actually putting in the effort to update and understand what's being updated bi-weekly, then it's fine.
Just way too much bad information floating around, especially gamers, they buy into the whole "disable updates, unpark cores, do xyz, etc" without actually knowing what the fuck any of that does - and then bitch when their computer is bricked with ransomware.
>>
>>61873606

>>

bite the bullet and move to linux, i was in the same position as you and I made the choice, there are games though you are more limited, there are some tweaks to be done but if you're not a brainlet they are fairly rare and easy to solve, install ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS.
>>
>>61873633
Why would you be afraid of it breaking things when A) compatibility mode exists
and B) going back to a previous build is a button away unless you did something stupid like wipe the old installation in the time you updated
>>
>>61873905
This is news to me. I'll be fine then for another 2 years. Thank you
>>
How's the education version? I hear it's as good as ltsb
>>
>>61873926
I will eventually have to do this lol
>>
>>61873987
Education version?
>>
>>61873676
ReactOS is certainly not "the same" as maintaining Windows 7, though. Since the Win32 layer is provided by Wine, you'll get essentially the same quality of compatibility, so at that point you might as well run Wine on Linux instead if application compatibility is all you're worried about.
>>
>>61873987
the education version is enterprise tier
ltsb doesn't come with edge for example but in education it does
most people should definitely go for it, instead of pirating ltsb because unless your school was trash, they probably have access to free personal education licenses
>>
>>61874013
Yeah, Win10 Education.
It's apparently the same as LTSB but meant to be used in schools. I can get it for free, but I'm also really skeptical about win10 as a whole.
>>
>>61874044
Ohhh. I see. I'll check into this
>>
I'm convinced that the best option is installing win 10 and then getting a bunch of scripts that petminatky disable the bloatware and unwanted apps... the catch is we will constantly have to maintain these scripts and update them when windows updates come out marking the scrips outdated... or bite the bullet and switch to Linux with combatiblility software. I guess there's two years to think about it before win 7 stops making security patches
>>
>>61874021
ReactOS has nothing to do with wine.

>>61872623
For new games to work (if you don't pirate them) you need to install Steam which is horrible, Windows like spyware. And don't even get me started on DRM that modern games implement.
In my opinion, people who support such anti-consumer ways of a software distribution are really crazy.
The most ethical way to play games is to use GOG which sells video games without DRM (they still can contain malicious code but we can't tell for sure because their source code is closed). I'm not really a gamer but I think that there are enough not shovelware games on GOG that support Linux. There is also Wine, of course.
If you still find that all these options still can't satisfy your gaming needs and you think that your freedom and privacy costs less than a FPS game with pretty graphics than, I guess, installing W10 with all its spyware is your best choice. Maybe someday you'll grow up and get your priorities right.

>>
>>61875080
Unless you're running a really old processor, Libreboot doesn't stop spying. All Intel i3, i5, i7 and newer AMD processors have permanent spyware built into the hardware that you cannot remove or modify.

You'll be surprised by the amount of free software out there.
All switching really consists of is rebuilding your software library and your knowledge base.

My friend and I constantly try new shit from the repos and bounce programs off of eachother.

I ended up finding kalgebra calculator I can use to replace me graphing calc during college classes.
>>
>>61873549
Look into GPU passthrough.

Don't go too crazy, I used it as my main OS after I figured out how to do it and promptly got bitten by all the shit I hate about windows... Broke the camel's back and I went full tux and made a small gaming VM that I use on occasion.
>>
>>61872623

i tried to install windows 7 on my laptop but there was no driver support because it has a kaby lake.

but even then, my wifi and ethernet drivers were fucked up. i did a clean install and it solved the problem, for now.

the only reason for me using win 10 is because of drivers and it can barely get that right.

Are you unaware that you can dualboot? Only drawback to this is that it becomes much more difficult to do a boot encryption. For this reason, I have an old HP Slimline running XP that isn't connected to the internet for productivity. Privacy without gimping the system a la not activating the iCloud.

Honestly, It has been about 2 years, but back when I bought into the Mac meme, I wound up feeling like it was a chore due to pretty much everything that happened on my phone also popping up on the Macbook. It wound up making me disable iCloud on my phone (which is probably a good thing), and selling the Macbook to get an HP Elitebook. Put Mint on the Elitebook, and use an old XP machine that is offline for iTunes encrypted backups.

I guess I'm glad I picked one up, just to realize exactly how much I was sharing with Apple.

worth selling to China because they have a good market and the Chinese government requested a custom made windows 10 just for them without the telemetry so Microsoft delivered.
>>
>>61878357
He meant that Windows 7 is still getting security uipdates. True, there are security exploits that will never be patched, but that's true for all Windows OS's, so I'm not positive how that becomes a positive regarding Windows 10 vs 7, as 10 will be missing those patches as well.

Windows isn't a very good product. It just has a lot of marketshare, and is familiar. The NT kernel, which all Windows since 3.0 have been based on, was never meant to handle the internet (which launched a mere month after release), due to its monolithic architecture, so no matter how much patch work they do, it won't change the fact that Windows is going to be a security nightmare regarding the internet. Adding new features without fixing the core problem is like having a weight bearing wall on your house rotting, while you add a new wing onto the house. It looks nice, but doesn't fix the really big problem.
