Why would anyone use something that doesn't just work out of the box? Ubuntu is great - it works, provides great support and documentation. There's literally no reason to use anything else if you just want to get some work done and not spend millions of hours fixing and ricing shit.

Yeah I went down that road and the only good thing to come from it is being more comfortable with the command line and file system, which I could have done from the comfort of Unity or Gnome or whatever. It's such a relief going back to stock Ubuntu.
