Just go on Newegg and run a search starting from your minimum specs. You should also keep an eye out on sites like Slickdeals for flash sales.

Personally, I think 15.6" is nice to look at but just a bit too much for wanting to carry everywhere. 13.3" is a tiny bit too small for proper multitasking but otherwise great. 14"s are a sweet spot but harder to find these days. I say when in doubt, go smaller. Try to get good screen resolution (not just size) but don't make it a hill to die on. Same with storage. Value an SSD with limited space over a big but slower HDD. You can always get externals.

Are you fucking Gen Xer? Of course, he needs a laptop for school. I could list a million reasons, but I'll just give one.

-Group project and everyone meeting up in a coffee shop to research.

>>
>>61859973
this
Holy shit I remember back in high school all the normshits would never take notes in class and then had to study their asses off for a test.
All it took for me was to right down notes and transcribe over to my laptop literally taking 30 minutes a day for all classes and that was it. Golden for ever.
Never did any study or group bullshit.

No, E series with fall apart in your hands. Unless you really want a newer laptop, the older refubrished ones are fine(Processor speeds on laptops really haven't improved at all since the 3rd gen Cores, and Thinkpads have a shit ton of battery options)
So go on Ebay and search for x230, x230 tablet, t430, e6430 and try to see which general models you like.
Storage you can do on your own since it's easy

I'm not sure if its in your price range but a friend who is studying computer science got a really thin asus laptop
it's perfect imo, the keyboard feels nice, you never hear the fans and it weighs pretty much nothing
my thinkpad doesn't weight much too but it for sure is a really big difference you notice if you carry that thing every day with you

my thinkpad may have better specs but thats doesn't even matter if its only for coding, browsing and office
>>
>>61863586
It's not about the specs only. For most usages, a second gen i5 will suffice.
The thing is , the build quality, durability and reliability of an Enterprise grade laptop are impossible for a consumer shitty laptop to match.
Thinkpads have excellent keyboards, are extremely rugged and reliable, easy to repair, easy to find spare parts. They're just a bulletproof, solid machine.
A brand new Enterprise grade laptop, made to last a long time and take a beating, will cost you WAY more than your average consumer grade shit that falls apart on its own.
>>
>>61867772
I don't even mind if the shit falls apart on its own, so long as everything is modular and cheap to replace. If I need to spend 30 bucks to replace the motherboard once ever couple of years, that isn't all that bad.

Thinkpad X200s

Thinkpad T420
>>
>>61863586
They just don't build new laptops the way they built old Thinkpads. I'm pretty sure my X201s from 2010 will outlive many new laptop generations to come. Especially when I can just fix it myself because it was actually made to be serviceable unlike modern disposable trash.

And about the specs: I don't need any more performance for programming, making documents (so kinda programming anyway) or browsing stuff. Older tech is indeed less power-efficient so I have to carry a heavier battery for that.

MacBook Pro

https://www.thurrott.com/mobile/microsoft-surface/132728/consumer-reports-microsoft-surface-dead-last-reliability

But as Consumer Reports notes, the reliability of Apple’s laptop and tablet products are consistently the most highly rated by its readers. So whether you believe that MacBooks and iPads are innovative, they are indeed the most reliable products of their kind.
>>
>>61870826
That's interesting, but I'm much more comfortable with the article's conclusion "ms surface dead last", than with yours. Lenovo's line includes shitware like the Ideapad, chromebooks, and et cetera. Dell, Asus, and the other brands have similar low-end models available. Apple laptops start at $1299 so of course they're going to be sturdier.
>>
>>61862578

The only majors that require a laptop are ones where you really shouldn't major in them in the first place. STEM majors don't require a laptop because all the labs have computers there with the specified programs needed (which use tons of resources that would fry a laptop) and you can't use a laptop period in math classes because it's pointless. The only classes that you need a laptop are ones like fag feminist studies or basketball americans history of peanutbutter studies.

Being interested in tech doesn't limit you to the newest shit, especially when the useful life of upmarket, enterprise is much longer than consumer grade. Maybe you don't want to spend 1k on a new laptop and have other interests or a desktop that you'd rather spend that money on.

And a $300 consumer grade, costco bought laptop is not what you'd ever want to depend on.

A tablet is not good enough for anything besides powerpoint slides and e-books. You're better off getting a laptop that can also act in a tablet like manner for these situations.

This. Live in the university labs. It's the best way to force yourself to both be social and get shit done instead of slacking off. I never owned a laptop in undergrad and it was a good thing.

Pen and paper for the classroom, lab computer for everything else. If the university is so shit that it can't provide enough lab space for it's students then you need a new university.

If you have an old laptop and you're just using it for notes, I'd recommend your Linux distro of choice and buy/ upgrade your dorm PC. The only exceptions are some CS or maybe art students.

No. This is a very stupid idea. Core 2 Duo and a max of 4GB of RAM is almost as bad as chromebooks.

>CS students
What kind of stuff do these people do? At my work, I've had to handle the RMA requests by these students, for zenbook laptops, and almost all of them get pissy when I give them a loaner laptop with a fairly recent full voltage laptop grade i3. Most of them tend to demand that I fetch one with a quad core i7 for them.

Most of them give the impression that they have no idea of what they're doing, but they're still going to get better jobs than me, and get paid more. While I'm stuck in a store trying to present their fucked up stuff in such a way that the workshop will take it under warranty.

Best laptop sub $400, period.
Those features for the price are unbeatable, my sister just picked one up for highschool.

I want to replace my 2009 MBP, but I'll wait for the Ryzen + Vega APUS to roll out

Refitted Thinkpad. I'm using a T420 that I paid $190 aud for, for that exact purpose. Better than anything I could've gotten new in any reasonable price range in build quality and performance.

literally anything will do. my only piece of true advice is that If you're going to bring it around places, you MUST get something small and light. I tried lugging around my t420 back in school and hated it.
