I want to relive some memories and build a late 90's/early 2000's PC. I'm looking at a Geforce 3 AGP, but I'm not sure about the motherboard/CPU. Ideally I would would dual boot Win98 and WinXP. I hear there might be issues with sound card compatibility in DOS depending on the motherboard chipset.

Anyways, a Tualatin P3 1.4 GHz sounds like a good choice and they can be found for $20. What would be a good board to pair this with?

Also there is a ton of Pentium 4 motherboard/CPU/RAM bundles on eBay for cheap. I keep hearing that the P4 was a shitty chip. I actually skipped the P4 back then so I have no idea. But getting a bundle for $40 seems tempting. Would I run into issues as far as DOS compatibility? Would it be wise to just go with the Tualatin instead?

Don't even have to pay, just put an ad on Craigslist or kijij stating you'll pickup old computers for free. I picked up 13 computers in 3 weeks that way, majority old pentium 4's, ended up sending all of them to e-waste center and kept a Pentium D. Pentium 4s are worthless don't even pay for one, just ask around your family, friends and coworkers if they have an old computer they want to get rid of.

I just have to say that Windows 98 is an impressive operating system. Until 2006 I did my daily computing on a 64 MB RAM Pentium 2 system running Windows 98.

The P4 runs quite hot and isn't all too efficient. Clock for clock the P3 is actually faster, i.e. a 1.4GHz P3 is faster than a 1.4GHz P4. Also you won't have ISA slots for retro expansion cards, and good luck finding 9x drivers. For a dual-boot 98/XP system, a 1GHz or faster P3, whether it's Coppermine or Tualatin, will be just fine.

I'm not too worried about ISA slots. I do have an old SB Live PCI card that I want to use, and I sort of remember that there's a way to get it working in DOS. If that doesn't work it's not a big deal since most onboard audio from that time period is compatible with SB Pro in DOS anyways.

You might want a separate machine for DOS games, perhaps a 486 or early Pentium. Many DOS games will run unplayably fast on a P3, if they even run at all.

performance wise the P4 wasn't really shit it was just a poorer value for what you got depending on the task, it was still plenty passable

a 1 GHz Coppermine PIII is probably your best choice, but if you're going to go up a generation at least go for an S423 Rambus system, they're a little more novel, likely to be high-end and were usually built pretty well

If the board lacks ISA or the ISA slots are bridged through PCI and don't operate natively, you won't have the IRQ and DMA access necessary for DOS programs to use the sound hardware.

Some sound cards provide drivers that will emulate these hardware features, but even these rely on other hardware southbridge features that eventually disappeared. Namely PC-PCI/SBLink, PCI non-maskable interrupts, distributed DMA and temporal DMA.

Intel chipsets: Sound Blaster stops working beyond ICH5. Aureal Vortex stops working beyond ICH7.
VIA chipsets: Sound Blaster stops working beyond VT82C686. Aureal Vortex stops working beyond VT8237

Why do many old computer cases have no exhaust fans or even a place to mount them? If I'm going to run a Pentium 3 do I really not need to worry about air flow?

Most PIII processors have a TDP under 30 watts. Several slot-1 chips don't even have a fan, just a big heat sink.
The PSU was normally enough to serve as the main exhaust since the case air barely gets warm at all. Intake was normally passive as well, with air coming in vents to replace what the PSU blows out.

8086 doesn't even need a heatsink, PSU is like 70 watts and only even uses 30w of that peak
Even all the way up to P3's, usually one fan to blow air in over the cpu heatsink and the psu exhaust was enough

Voodoo3 would be a good fit. Also if it's a 66mhz FSB Celeron you can typically OC them 50% by raising the FSB to 100 while keeping AGP in spec by setting the AGP/CPU multiplier to 2/3.

So I found this clock at the thrift store today, no wood grains, but it's got that cool rolling digit display. Power cord looked iffy; insulation a bit stiff from exposure. I figured I could replace the power cord, except I don't know jack about how electricity works. Or I'm just over cautious.

I thought about swapping in the power cord from my digital clock but figured that clock drew less power and wasn't sure if it would be safe to use the cord with this, I considered using the cord from an extension cord instead. Second, would I need a different kind of solder than what I use on electronic components?

Just make sure the contacts are properly clean and touching between the wire and the contact it's going to, just make a good solder joint, no need to use different solder, it won't get hot, unless it's a badly made thin joint. Not that that could draw much anyways. But that's generally a tip when soldering wall outlet AC wires.

Those are still electronic components though. Any power cable of similar gauge should be fine. The power leads might not even be soldered inside there. They might just be on crimp terminals.

Lads i'm having a dilemma. I still have my old childhood monitor (similar to pic related) but it had a problem where the VGA cable was pinched somewhere and the Red channel was gone. Being from 1997, it's one of those monitors where the VGA cable is embedded in the monitor so it's very specific and you can't just get a new one.

In order to fix this with max authenticity, i got a nearly identical monitor with a working cable and did a swap. All good, but now i don't have the heart to throw away the new donor monitor for recycling... What do?

It's not as simple as doing a patch, the cable looks fine on the outside and the pinch is somewhere on the inside. Fixing it would require:

- Taking a new VGA cable, cutting one side off,
- Either re-crimping the wires for the connector inside or splicing all the wires to the old one and insulating with heatshrink which isn't as reliable
- Redoing the ferrite core on that end if necessary

Just wondering if it's worth the hassle. The donor one has a "Cromaclear" pixel pattern instead of a shadowmask so the image would be nice and crisp, supposedly?

Just buy a VGA cable then, cut off one end and cut off that connector in pic related and solder it to it.
There are VGA cables on sale with ferrite cores and the rubber part behind the monitor is the easiest part, if it's glued to the cable just cut open one side and clue it back together on the underside so you can't see it, with the new cable.

I got hold of a few peripherals, catalogues and old manuals for the system/36 line after doing some warehouse and storage cleanup at my mom's old job.
I also got a few booklets, including a BASIC programming book and reference from the IBM PC duing that stint

They used to run a 5360 with a few addons until 1996-1997 according to the old backup floppies

I still have the 8' boot floppies and floppy dispenser case for it. For booting it up, you could insert up to 8 or 10 floppies into the box, throw it in the machine, and it'd boot and swap floppies when needed.
With these things, you'd need a floppy with what would equate the BIOS, along with 3-4 floppies with the OS. The rest of the box could be filled with your accounting software or other stuff...

we have come a damned long way since then... especially considering boot procedures...

I don't know, this was a gift to me from my brother, it was donated to a repair shop he worked at. Wish I had the square mouse but I have a line on a two button ADB Kensington Turbomouse for it.
