So guys, I have a dilemma.
Lenovo ThinkPad W550s
15.6" / 2880 x 1620 / IPS / non touch / Intel Core i7-5600U / 8GB RAM DDR3 / 500 GB (HDD) / NVIDIA - Quadro K620

or
DELL Latitude E5570 (5570-8108)
15.6" / 1920 x 1080 / Intel Core i7 / 8GB RAM DDR4 / 500 GB (HDD) / AMD R7

Both are priced the same and both come with windows 7 (because of work I will have to dual boot)

I am leaning towards the W550s, it has a better display and according to some reviews battery lasts longer. Sadly it is also bigger and heavier. Do you guys have some details about the build quality?

Thanks mates!

Latitudes/Precisions use MXM slotted GPUs instead of soldered, and since Dell also owns Alienware they tend to be compatible with higher-end GPUs. I think the P70/P71 is the only MXM Thinkpad, and Thinkpads tend to be pretty restrictive about non-factory components.

Hello tpg. Got this T61 (later version? Has bigger keyboard bezels than other T61s online and has vista sticker) for $40 today with office dock thing on the right. It is in mint condition, even with all original instructions. Everything works on it, there is no dust, cracks, etc. It was used in a hospital which just gave out upgrades. Is it worth enough to sell? Where is the best place to sell it? EBay doesn't seem to be the scene, I'm not really sure about craigslist. Are there any thinkpad classifieds sites? I already have a laptop with Gnu/Linux and don't need it necessarily.

> gamer laptop
There's a few problem with those:
> Garbage build quality
> No serviceable parts available ever
> Shitty drivers
> No battery life
> Most of them have a shitty display

> B-But muh dedicated GPU
Intel Graphics already overperforms most old/low-end GPUs, many "gaymen" laptops are literally slower than a Haswell iGPU.
Are you going to game on it? What games? If it's League of Legends/Dota tier, Intel graphics maxes it out, if it's GTA V tier, you may want a desktop, since gaming laptops that decently plays it are really expensive.
>>
Is there even that much difference in performance between x220, x230, x240 if they're all kitted out with an i5, SSD, and 6-8gb of ram?
>>

Most of them have nice IPS displays.

>if it's GTA V tier, you may want a desktop, since gaming laptops that decently plays it are really expensive

No it's not, a gaymen laptop with a 1050 costs just as much as a thinkpad equivalent, but brings a better processor on top.

>No it's not, a gaymen laptop with a 1050 costs just as much as a thinkpad equivalent, but brings a better processor on top.

has anyone gotten displayport working on their t420? From what I understand I have to use the nvidia to use external displays. Fucked up installing bumblebee and broke my install. Why do you think that's not important? Are you really okay with replacing your laptop every year not because you need better specs or due to any internal component failure but because the cheap-ass case or keyboard gave up on you or allowed the laptop to take damage that could've been avoided?

Third-party batteries won't be any better than genuine. Your configuration is simply very power-hungry. I've got a lower-specced T510 with an i5 and 900p screen and it's lucky to last more than an hour and a half on its ~75% genuine 9cell. You might fare better if your model has Optimus, but mine doesn't. The iGPU is just completely disabled and unusable, so that old Nvidia dGPU is always blazing away.

I fell for the Thinkpad meme and love it. I've never used Linux before and it came with a fresh install of Mint. Kind of want to keep it to just to learn a new os.
Seems like a waste of a fine machine for my dad to use for no more than a few hours a week.

I had the same experience. Bought myself a $20 T40 "as-is" for memery (already had an X61t). Got my dad a T440 at the same time as a replacement for his old work latitude. Installed mint on it so he could transition from Windows. My T40 was DOA with a fucked mobo. Felt a little envious of leaving the t440 with him.

But you gotta be good to your daddy, boy. Leave it with him. How would you feel if your dad took back a laptop he gave to you?

He doesn't even know I got it, planning to give it to him for his birthday. He uses a Dell desktop from the 90's most of the time for work, so I could easily grab a cheap consumer laptop or lesser thinkpad off Craigslist and he'd be fine.
I'll spend a few days debating my morality.

If hes anything like my dad he will be happy with any old thing. Found a intel atom netbook with a locked bios someone was throwing away. Dad has an old vaio from 2002 hes been using on xp since it was new. Asked him if he wanted the netbook and he loved it. Its got a big dumb handle on it and its super light so he uses a usb endoscope to help him do construction work (to see into pipes and walls).

> last me 4+ years of Uni
Trying to buy for the future is never a good plan. The pace of technology will outdo your initial investment. You also run the risk of it getting broken/stolen, and then you're out a big chunk of change.

Just buy what suits you now. Spend like ~$450, save the other $450, and buy a newer laptop or upgrade it in 2 years.

If you're bringing your desktop to college with you, you probably won't use the laptop for much beyond basic tasks.

Well my budget is probably going to be limited to just 1K overall (Desktop + Laptop).
Spending the bare minimum for a laptop ~300 and leaving 600 on a desktop rig is an option. But I don't know if that would be more or less convenient than buying a more premium laptop and going without a Desktop.
I feel that I might neglect my desktop if I had an adequate laptop.

The $1k is for both computers?
Spend $750 on a desktop and $250 on the thinkpad. Your desktop dollars will go so much farther.

If you put the money in your desktop and get a decent CPU, you can just drop a newer graphics card in 2 or 3 years when it starts to show its age.
The laptop is not going to age as well and will also not be upgradeable. Get as small of a laptop as you're comfortable so it's not a pain to haul around.

I can promise you that you're not going to be using your laptop for much more than documents, 4chinz, and videos. You're not going to be doing whatever heavy duty stuff you think you will be, on the go. All I've seen is retards bringing their machines into class and playing video games, and you sure as fuck don't want to go down that road.

Looking at the x220, possibly the tablet version, to accompany my t410. Is dual core alright? Is it better on battery life? Any recommended places to look?
>>
>>61844939
I got it custom-made from a guy. It's in Brazil though.

>tfw your laptop is stuck in customs hell
th-thanks, lenovo, i didn't want it soon anyways
>>
>>61850398
me again, I suggested it because usually you would want something light, fast and portable. usually ThinkPads are cheaper than applel products but if you actually wanted to make friends with non-autists and if your uni used examsoft (which supposedly runs like shit under windowns but works fine under macOS) you woulf definitely be better off with a macbook. you can hackintosh an X230 iirc but usually this isnt as stable as using an actual macbook. so just ask your uni teachers whether or not they'll use examsoft in the future and get a laptop accordingly.

It's used and the guy will only ship it Monday, but I'll have it sooner than you :^)

is there any below 300 dollar reliable laptop/tablet that has a great battery life and a processor capable of reading my 700 page textbooks pdf files perfectly?
I don't mind it being refurbished and it would be nice if it was lightweight tho not necessary especially after i heard that hp and dell budget laptops are super bloated and their processors can't do shit
>>
>>61833645
Just wondering, guys. How many of you really use the trackpoint thingy? Isn't it a meme now that Thinkpads also have a standard touchpad?
>>
x220 or x230?

>my dad's company stoped using thinkpads and is now using hp laptops

I do, because it makes my gf wet.

My company uses a mix of surfaces, Toshiba Tecras, Thinkpads (but only shit ones like E's) and Dells.

If anyone from /tpg/ is planning to get eGPU - fucking don't.
Upgrade your wifi card to ac or use wired network and stream gaymes from desktop pc/home server. eGPUs are NOT mobile and being forced to always disable v-sync in gaymes is lame.
Also having 9000 drives in one laptop is stupid. It's best to store all multimedia files and gaymes remotely, on NAS for example.

I've had my T430 for one and a half days and I love it. Threw in an SSD to replace the HGST 500G HDD. Will eventually replace the cd drive with a HDD caddy and put back the HDD. It has 4G of RAM which is plenty for me. Might upgrade it to 8G if I find a good deal.

Other than that all I can say is thanks /tpg/. Now I'm just gonna wait for the raven ridge thinkpads to come out end if this year or beginning of next.

upgrade the processor, keyboard and display resolution
>>
>>61851644
>>61851644
>upgrade the processor
More powerful than my previous laptop (i5-2250 or whatever is called).

>keyboard
I thought I wasn't going to like the chiclet, but the Lenovo chiclet keyboard is great. Miles better than any other chiclet keyboard I tried (Dell, Apple, Asus, HP).

>and display resolution
Again, better than my previous laptop (1366x768). Besides 1600x900 is the highest the T430 goes.
>>

Where are you getting that price?
>>
>>61852175
Using subito.it, a site for selling 2nd hand everything. I bought a really good bike for €200 a month ago from that site.
In Italy basically nobody uses craigslist (atleast for selling computers).

Here's my list:

4 x t400
2 x t420
2 x x220
1 x x220 tablet
1 x x200 tablet (had 2 sold one)
1 x t430
>>
>>61852537
how are the x220 tablets?
>>
>>61849170

Nope not running out of money... all my purchase averages about $60 USD.
>>
>>61852568

Pretty nice... i haven't use it a lot but they are comfy for drawing. I really like the rotate button on it.
>>
>>61852607
does it work well with GNU/Linux? I'm kinda torn between the x200t and x220t, not sure if the extra processing power will matter since they are both dual core.

You can download the latest bios on lenovo's site. Do you need a modified bios?
>>
>>61853841
I didn't realize it was an official one, sweet.
>>
>>61853841
I can't find it, maybe I'm retarded.
>>
>>61853841
Yes you need the modded one to unlock 1600mhz and above, the same one that gives you extra options and removes the chinknovo whitelist.
