the article title is a reasonable extrapolation from the document
the document is basically about how the FCC is supposed to be assessing deployment of broadband across the country and asking if they canlower the bar for what constitutes broadband (which in their definition is currently 25mbps down) and count cellular networks (making the deployment look much better than it is)

Just create your own ISP.

I never understood meme logic like this.

As technology advances, we're always going to improve in one way or another. We're never gonna say "Okay. Good enough. We can stop here" because that's lazy and pointless. Eventually what's new today will be retro tech tomorrow.
>>
>>61824906

He's got a point. Not everyone is a typical /g/ user. It's difficult to justify rolling out 25Mb internet to rural areas when the vast majority of people with access to 25Mb don't purchase it anyway.

This isn't the telephone era. The marginal benefit of going from 3 Mbps DSL to 25Mb cable isn't anywhere close to going from nothing to having phone service.

>>61827583
They require that because they need uninterrupted access compared to public lines. They never use all that speed.

>>
>>61827697
4K is the worst meme in the world and it's only something being pushed by tech companies because they've reached the diminishing returns of tech / entertainment ratio. Most people are okay with staying at 1080 cause there's no reason to get any clearer or bigger of a screen. Even if 4K took off, that's just an extra ten minutes of downloading for most people.
>>
>>61827648
http://www.theesa.com/article/150-million-americans-play-video-games/

You're stuck 20 years ago with your logic. As more and more old fucks die off, people who regularly play video games all through their adult lives rapidly become the majority. Over half of gamers stream movies specifically with a console as well, so there's even more if you remove that restriction. Did you forget about how almost all games these days require downloading to install, in addition to huge updates on them as well? And games aren't getting any smaller. Forza 7, for example, is going to be over 100GB at launch. This will be the new norm, and it will only increase every few years.
Face it, internet speeds are not something to become complacent about. Just because all you do is jack off to 240p porn and shitpost on an imageboard, doesn't mean that's how limited most people's internet uses are.

>As more and more old fucks die off, people who regularly play video games all through their adult lives rapidly become the majority
Then you have more to worry about than not fast enough internet if millions of americans are still playing video games instead of working a job that provides money for said video games. Even then, 150m americans arent playing games online. That number is including mobile. Also speed =/= bandwidth. People will still be able to enjoy video games even if an actual 150m were online at once playing CoD or some Steam multiplayer game. Games transmit little data upstream and down, which any smart multiplayer dev has accounted for. The only bottleneck is how many people in your neighborhood are playing online gaming at the same time and how good your lines are.
>>
>>61827754

>muh vidya

you're not entitled to playing video games
>>
>>61827761
HD is still a meme, which is why people run streaming at lower res for faster downloads. You have this notion that the internet was only made for streaming and wondering why isps have to cater to only one area of the net, an entertainment section no less.
>>
>>61827754
>is going to be over 100GB at launch

I don't understand what is the problem. For government services like filing taxes and applying benefits you don't really need that much.
In Finland the mandated minimum speed is 1 Mbit/s.

Or are you really saying you really "NEED" the bandwidth for netflix or some other garbage. I swear you amerifats are the most retarded people on this planet. If somebody said you don't NEED hamburgers to live you would probably shoot the guy.

Stop pretending that you have a good excuse to worsen what we have.
>>
>>61827849
>unironically arguing in favor of worse technology

That's what you're arguing.

Net-neutrality guarantees low speeds and low data caps, especially for the rural people.

Because there's no Net-neutrality in the mobile industry, at least rural-fags can stream 24/7 content from many sites that have 0 rating with mobile carriers.

How does NN benefit rural people exactly? It does the exact opposite.

Disclaimer: All I wish the FCC did is reduce regulation and increase competition.

The document asks the public for comments on a variety of questions, including whether mobile broadband can substitute for fixed Internet connections. You can file comments at this link:
https://www.fcc.gov/ecfs/search/proceedings?q=name:((17-199))

Initial comments are due September 7, and reply comments are due September 22.

Nothing is stopping you from telling the FCC your concerns. I don't really know if this is decrease competition.

>it's the government's fault that video game companies make 100GB bloated software

Every software and company took into account two decades ago the common internet speeds of the average person and optimized everything, including formats such as jpg, mp3, and ogg. Ever since internet speeds have skyrocketed, that's the only reason you have seen the formats come such as flv, mp4, and the like. What you fail to realize in your post is that the fault does not like on internet companies. If someone releases a 1000GB sized software or service, it is not the isp responsibility to cater to it.

Net neutrality is just putting a bandage over the real problem. The real problem is the government enforced regional ISP monopolies. Each municipality decides which ISPs are allowed in which area, even in cases where a new ISP has been willing to pay to lay new cable and set up shop, they have been denied. Even if you are out in the country with no internet and the designated ISP doesn't want to give you internet, but some other ISP is willing to, they can't because of the government won't let them.
I think a good solution would be to force the ISPs to rent out their cable to an unlimited number of ISPs which would allow any currently existing ISP and any new ones in the future to set up shop in any area they want thus increasing speeds and lowering the price. But to push for innovation, if an ISP lays new cable/fiber, they should have exclusive access to that for a set number of years before they have to rent it out.
No reason shit holes like South Korea and Europe should have much faster and much cheaper internet than in the US.

Why not use the copper that we already paid for and make the telcos rent it out? There's much more bandwidth to be had there and none of the contention problems that cable has.
Really, the correct solution is for the Post Office to get into the ISP business, fiber to the home and all.

>But some French asshole or Norwegian ice-brained cocksucker apparently can't understand the concept of large open spaces and the challenges that come with.
Russians can. Perhaps others aren't the ones with the problem.
Also, America literally does suck because the only thing it reliably stands for is grading society on a curve. It's time for the world to nuke the jewSA and be rid of it.
>>
>>61829129

Someone still has to pay for it and the cost is simply too high for most rural areas.

They don't have enough people to warrant the investment, and anyone stupid enough to pay for the infrastructure will be stuck with it and no possible chance to see profit within the next 200 years because you spent $150M to wire up 2500 houses and only 1500 signed up for service.
>>
>>61833062

>>
>>61833031
You can only succeed if there's a minimum demand to profit. Competition won't fix shit, the free market memes are just memes. Reality is those people picked a shithole to live. >>
>>61833088

>>
>>61833088
Move the people or wait for wireless to get better. The best hope, not even joking, is for phone companies to compete, and they actually can because they don't try to hold local monopolies because of the cost effectiveness of laying cell towers (covers large areas) makes it viable to service a lot of people cable companies can. Verizon was even talking about using high frequency band 5G to serve broadband to homes. Still not as cost effective as the band's serving phones but it's a step up
>>
>>61833103
Allowing the federal government to step in and try to fix everything with more bureaucracy and lawyers won't solve anything.

>>61833155
>Verizon was even talking about using high frequency band 5G to serve broadband to homes
Yea in the north east they want to leverage their existing fiber network (Verizon FiOS) for Verizon wireless 5G backhaul and allow them to offer fixed wireless internet. It would theoretically allow 1gbps but realistically youd probably see between 300-700mbps depending on distance from the microcell site and congestion on the local network.
>>
>>61833165
Allowing the federal government to take total ownership of all ISPs would likely fix the issue to be honest.

It's the pussy half step between socialism and free market bullshit that allows the ISPs to fuck us. You want no regulation (which wouldn't work) and claim regulation doesn't work because of current regulation, but actually current regulation is bullshit watered down because you and others like you refuse to allow us to ever ACTUALLY implement real regulation, it always gets watered down and then you triumphantly roar about how the regulation failed, despite the fact you're the ones watering the regulation down to assure it's failure.

take complete control of all ISP and force all profits to be reinvested into infrastructure instead of dividends for share holders and bonuses for executives.
>>
>>61833265
>Allowing the federal government to take total ownership of all ISPs would likely fix the issue to be honest.
And if you don't have lawyers or the time to fill out monstrous amount of paperwork, you're fucked. This will only allow the select few with the means of being able to be an ISP like comcast or verizon. Even worse, if you want to experiment with new technology, you better lawyer up and hope the government approves of it or you won't be doing anything they don't like.

That's doesn't change what I said, especially since the demand is growing fast enough.

From the ISP's perspective, there's no reason to roll out 25Mb to rural towns when:
A. It costs a fortune
B. It's unlikely that they'll order if it's available

and

C. Mobile broadband represents a much more fertile ground to increase broadband connectivity given the cost of deployment
>>
>>61834093
This, it's far cheaper to provide 5-10gbps+ backhaul bandwidth to a 5G cellular tower to provide coverage to 50 homes in a rural area than it would be to run fiber to each house, or even just copper last mile.

5G fixed wireless is likely the only chance for most rural areas to see 300mbps+
