If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>R3 1200 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R3 1300x - Good stop-gap between the 1500x and the 1200, only get a 1400 if you absolutely need multithreading
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

I'm waiting for my case, keyboard/mouse, and GPU to arrive but I've got all the other parts of this build https://pcpartpicker.com/list/KsNbPs

Should I put the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and power supply together tonight out of boredom?

Will putting the motherboard on it's box and pressing parts into it damage the underside?

Will it be a problem trying to put it all into the case without taking it back apart?

Also, on the motherboard there are 4 RAM slots, I know you're supposed to space the sticks by one empty slot, but there's a black pair of slots and a red pair, does it matter which ones I put them in?

If a bug could crawl inside it you can surely take it apart to try and clean it off.

Someone made fun of me earlier for having more expensive RAM on my build than the CPU. You gotta do what works for your goals. If I wanted to make an anime-watching rig, then I might conceivably spend more money on hard drives than on a CPU, or RAM, or GPU, or whatever.

Salvaging an X51-R2 Anon, here.

I'm thinking I'll wait for some DDR3 @ 1600 to go on sale. Digging into sale history they seemingly do still go on sale, so it's worth limping on 4GB to get 16GB for what I'd pay for 8 normally.

Monitor-wise, I have not a damn clue. Have a 27" 60hz 1080p monitor coming through Fed-Ex, but I'm unsure I'll be keeping that given the size and the 60hz. Been doing a lot of reading to figure out what all this new shit means. Can't wait for 2160p, though. That sounds sexy.

Plan to wait for my ideal case. Hoping to find something with good front ventilation so I can exhaust things frontward and use it as a heater, but that's just a dumb idea.

Debating a 550W EVGA gold-rated PSU for $80. Has a $20 MIR to bring it down to $60. Paid $120 for a 620W Corsair PSU in ages past, so that seems good.

Also looking at an EVGA GTX 1050 Ti of one sort or another to replace the GTX 745 in this. Just waiting for sales.
>>
>>61810262
Should I put in a crappy decade old graphics card for a week once the case and keyboard arrive or will that somehow be a pain in the ass when I need to switch it out for the new one?

I'm gonna get a GTX 1050 ti but the last one I bought showed up used without the box despite being advertised as new, so I'm waiting for refund money to order one.

I own most of the shit in that first build. I already have the motherboard, CPU, DVD drive, and HDD. I'm reboxing them. But to rebox them from Alienware's slim midget case I need a proper PSU.

The core of things may be replaced in time, but my intent is to get the ship out of drydock as cheaply as possible.

Planning to buy a external 2TB for archiving and to put all stuff in so I can reinstall my Windows to a fucking SSD at last.

However my question being, what are the best ones in the market? I tried looking through like 5 different External review lists but they're all so simple and don't have any proper data tests done that I think reviewers have become lazy when it comes to any parts that aren't CPU or GPU this decade.

I have a Trancend 750gb External from few years ago but it's already full of stuff, it's shockproof and all that and was considered back then among the best durable ones, it has 2TB model around nowadays so I was thinking maybe going for that.

A game like PUBG, known for its awful memory leaking sure, can easily use up to 10gb or RAM these days. So 16GB is becoming norm soon, while 32GB would be really nice to have.

I find myself in a situation where having a desktop is just not an option. I've been in this situation for a few years and will be in it for a few years longer, so this isn't a case of "just wait a few months and then get a desktop".
I've been making do with a laptop that was pretty decent when I bought it, but struggles to run recent releases.

Are there any companies that let you upgrade the hardware on a laptop? Even if I have to take it back to the retailer for every upgrade, that beats buying a whole new computer every few years.

Failing that, can you recommend a company that will let me customize my laptop's hardware that isn't alienware? I don't need flashing LEDs and little grey heads on my cover, I just need it to work.

Failing both those options, what laptop would you recommend around the €1500 mark? I'd mostly be using it for gaming.

Looking to update my GPU but I am unsure about the compatibility with the mainboard.
It's an AM3 socket MSI G54 870a with an 6core phenom ii and i'd now like to buy a GTX 1050Ti.
Now my issue is that I don't know if new cards are comaptible with such an old mainboard that has Legacy BIOS and not an UEFI one.
Any knowledge on this matter?

asrock 970 xtreme 4
fx6100 (sorry)
8gb of some garbage dd3 ram
some 126gb ssd
some 1tb hdd
a fucking gtx1060 6gb

I used to have a gtx560ti that was acceptable back when I built this, but I gave it to my younger brother and bought the 1060 as a replacement because I got it 30% off during christmas 2016

obviously this build is garbage right now the processor is horrible the ram is outdated the mainboard is old the ssd is not useful anymore with a size that small

until today I thought I'll have to get an intel socket mainboard and get an i7 for a decent machine
since the ryzen flopped from what I saw
now you are shilling it like crazy again, what changed?

what parts should I get to stop bottlenecking my 1060?

my budget is flexible (400€-700€) if I can get decent value performance I'm willing to spend more, I'm probably looking for the max bang for buck build while I already own the 1060
I want to be able to play witcher 3 at a decent enough resolution and I'm willing to spend

Come on dude, I know that shilling is at it's max point, but the reviews are out and Ryzen has been tested and proven to be worth the hype.

Get the R5 1600 with a decent B350 MoBo and OC it to 4.0 on a decent cooler. If you want more power get the R7 1700.

The 7700K is good for higher framerates at 1080p. But for everyrhing else (including future games) you're better off with ryzen.

Check DigitalFoundry's latests videos on the topic.

What components are most likely to be broken when you turn on the PC it keeps turning off and turning on again itself when you are trying to start the PC from the first time? The coolers work, and the USB ports, CD reader, etc... But the computer keep turning off itself and the PC never starts, it's an infinite loop.

Motherboard, RAM, PSU, CPU. In that order.

>>61817668
If you want a rough estimation then I'd say a generation is equal to a tier. So 980 is rougly equivalent to 1070 and so on. But it varies greatly due to arcitectual changes, how game engines utilize them and that Nvidia dropping driver support for older cards.
>>
>>61817668
If you're one generation back, +10 is in the same ballpark (960 vs 1050, for example)
But more than a couple hundreds back, and you're really falling behind
>>
>>61817806
if you don't get a picture you either don't make it through POST or your GPU is dead. Or you connected your screen wrong, but that wouldn't explain the restarting.

I assume your mainboard doesn't have BIOS speaker like most nowadays? And no status LED? I'd go to the hardwarestore and get a 99cent bios speaker then, really helps with troubleshooting sometimes. Your only other option is to test part for part in a different system.

What CPU is that? Got an IGP? If yes, remove the external GPU and connect the monitor to the mainboard. Also try both DIMMs, one module at a time, in different DIMM slots to make sure no DIMM or DIMM slot is broken. Troubleshooting something like that is just trial&error. Hope you get lucky and find the component at fault quickly

You could easily reduce the PSU to one with 100 or even 200W less. Apart from that it looks totally fine. But completly overpowered for office work. Especially the GPU is a complete waste if he doesn't need it for anything
>>
>>61817866
by the way, for an office PC and some light video/image editing you may even get away with a 100 bucks A12 9800. Or a pentium with IGP if you want, but the platform of that sucks.

yes, it likes 3000 or 3200 if you can find it on the QVL. Right now the 7700K is the better choice for high FPS gaming but the 1700 will most likely be more future proof. Most modern engines get better and better at multithreading after all.

>>61818207
build one yourself, it's easier than fucking lego technic.

If you want to do the braindead think and buy a premade scam PC at least post specs of them, you cant give a universal answer to that. Generally you can't future proof hardware, it ages to much. Buy something that satisfies your needs for the close, forseeable future, upgrade when it doesn't anymore. Also past ~1500 bucks you're way up in the area of diminishing returns anyways, spending more doesn't improve much at that point

it shouldn't be a compatibility problem. Can't tell you anything about the LED if i don't know the mainboards name. Make sure to test different slots with both DIMMs.

>>61818273
it slices your data into many small pieces and stores them on both drives. If one dies or gets corrupted you loose everything, and even if it may be recoverable in some cases it's a fucking nightmare. With how cheap mass storage and even SSDs got it is absolutely not worth it anymore.

Ryzen's architecture is built around 4-core complexes, connected by something called "Infinity Fabric" which lets them communicate between each other
The Infinity Fabric runs at the same frequency as your RAM, so faster RAM is crucial with a Ryzen system
I would dream of making a Ryzen system with anything less than 2667, and if you're going for anything at or above the 1600(X) chip, I would get some 3200 off the QVL

I just checked the manual and the orange led means that the motherboard is working. So maybe the thing that is broken is the PSU or the Ram. Also when the delivery man brought me the PSU package it fell down, maybe the PSU is broken because of that.

There is a slight correction need to be made here- for ryzen chips Infinity Fabric runs at HALF ram speed - its not 1:1.
>>
>>61818470
And for the lower core count Ryzen chips, there's still 2 4 core CCXs. But cores are deactivated symetrically as needed. So a 1600 or 1600X has 1 core per CCX disables, while a Ryzen 3 or 1400/1500X has 2 cores per CCX disabled

Alright /pcbg/ I need to get two identical desktops for under €1600 in Portugal.

I already have one monitor, and technically I do have a one old desktop but it's been through a lot of abuse so I'd like to avoid using it. All the components on it are at least 7 years old now, which I think probably means the motherboard won't be compatible with modern CPUs but I could be wrong.

I also have a single 750W PSU that I could use, but would also rather not because as far as I can tell it just drains a constant 750W regardless of what I'm doing and that shit's expensive.

At the very least I need to be able to run Witcher 3 and star citizen at decent settings on these.
I have a couple of hard drives that will work for slow storage and a single 240GB SSD that could be used as a main drive for one of the computers if that eases up the constraints any, but again I'd like to get a new SSD because 240GB is a pain to manage with big games.

I might have some extra dosh for upgrades at the end of the year, which I will probably use for second monitors but will definitely have some left over for one or two components on each computer, say a larger SSD or more RAM.

On a side note I also need a cheap desk but I'm not expecting you to figure that one out for me.

If prices in portugal are less fucked and you can reuse some stuff you might get something like that together. You can cheap out on the tower, the board if necessary, you could go down to 2x4GB if it needs to be. But i wouldn't want to change the processor or platform.

To bad GPU prices are still fucked, that card was 50€P cheaper a few months ago

Is it normal for an R5 1600 (or any in the lineup) to fluctuate in freqs even under the most microscopic of load?

yeah, the PSU is a bit overkill(mostly on the price). be sure to OC that 1700 to infinity with that nice AIO.

I picked the Xeon because I've heard it's better for more CPU intensive applications like DAWs, and it's performance/price point. Gaming is secondary to music production in this build.
But I'm still a newb at this so I need someone more knowledgeable than me to tell me if it's worth it. I don't care about the age of a component as long as they're efficient and compatible.

>I picked the Xeon because I've heard it's better for more CPU intensive applications like DAWs
That's bullshit. Xeon is simply intels workstation line, but its based on the same chip the other haswel consumer chips like the i7 4770 or 4790K were based on. Its got the same performance. Some workstation related features are enabled, like support for ECC RAM.

Get a CPU of the current generation. For applications like yours in this pricerange the R5 1600 is the best bet. Also supports ECC RAM should you need that

I'd go with the 1070. Vega appears to use a lot of power and give off a lot of heat, not to mention potential issues with being an early adopter.

Anecdotal but worth mentioning: I have a 1070 in one build and a RX 480 in another, and there have been many hiccups in the build with the AMD gpu. I'm not comparing performance here, quality of life things that are independent from performance.

some CPUs have an integrated GPU, IGP. If you have a CPU without IGP (for AM4 only the A12 APUs currently have one, raven ridge will come next year), you don't need a dedicated GPU. The R3/R5/R7 chips don't have one, so you need a dedicated GPU.

With the recent AGESA updates and their impact on gpu passthrough, I'm finally interested in getting on the platform. I'd appreciate any measure of help.

I'm stuck between the 1600x and the 1700. Either way I'm probably going to be dedicating 4c/8t to my slave vm leaving only 2c for the host. I shouldn't run into any problems with cutting a 1600x 2c:4c for host:slave right? Would the 1700 be better performance wise for the host? I see that the single core scores for the 1600x are better than the 1700 by ~20% on average.

Another question is about RAM, I am aware of ryzens tendancy to prefer samsung b and check QVL for the board, but is it true that 3.2ghz ram will not perform in a 4x8gb config? If I am required to use 2x8 for that speed can I split the ram unevenly between host and client? 6gb:10gb for host:slave?

If I open a VM I expect to use it thoroughly or just close the thing and I know linux isn't nearly as performance hungry as windows so, assuming both ram and cores can be split unevenly would it be fine running a host with 2cores and 6gb ram AND a slave with 4cores and 10gb ram?
