Hardly necessary, any SATA SSD should be good enough for the majority of laptop tasks and doesn't cost an exorbitant amount of money. What I care for, as a developer, is a fast, multicore (as many as possible) processor, and expandable memory (or at least 16-32GB default). I also don't give a flying fuck about customer support as I'd rather be able to service it myself.

It's fine, but I have no use for a laptop.

Especially not one that costs $2000.
ESPECIALLY not since they ruined the once great 15 inch model by replacing physical keys with a fucking touch bar.
ESPECIALLY NOT when this change in the wrong direction made every single model ~$400 more expensive.

Back when I couldn't afford a macbook, they were amazing and I always wanted one.
Now that I could afford one, post-jobs-apple ruined the bloody things like they ruined all macs:

The Mac Mini is now a dual core at max and no longer upgradable.
The Mac Pro used to be one of the most beautiful, yet useful machines on the planet, now it's a literal trash can and has been abandoned since 2013.
The iMac is still way too expensive for what it is, although that 5k screen is amazing.
The Macbook Air is a pleb machine. "MUH THIN"

And the things they did to OS X / MacOS... good fucking god.

I was just too late.

At least you have the option in Windows to use an alternate shell (or maybe not anymore, haven't tried in Windows 10). Why the fuck would I want to use Unix when I'm not even allowed to install a tiling window manager (and don't bring up Amethyst or other shit hacks that are forced to rely on the Accessibility API). >>
>>61801662

needs some time configuring but it works flawlessly
careful, it's using a """""shitty""""" hack as per >>61801655, so you shouldn't bother even though it's working perfectly
>>
>>61801662
https://github.com/koekeishiya/chunkwm

It's not a tiling WM, it's a bunch of hacks on top of the Accessibility API that resize and move windows to provide a neutered set of functionality that resembles a tiling WM. This thing is a joke compared to i3, awesomewm, etc. I use a 2017 MacBook Pro for work and tried this along with every other "tiling window manager" for macOS. Enjoy your ~1s redraw times, having to restart the application because it randomly stops working and piss poor configurability.

macOS is garbage.

The build quality on Macs is better than any other laptop on the market. Face it.
>>
Let's face it, tech dweebs don't know the first thing about build quality. Shit, most of them still think 3d printing is revolutionary.... but have never heard of CNC. They think we'll be printing guns instead of cutting them out of metal.

Mechanically disinclined morons, the lot of them. A tech dweeb trying to judge build quality is like a woman trying to judge car performance by how pretty the dashboard is.
>>
>>61801856
>unstable
literally only restart it to reload changed config, not a single crash
>redraw speed
absolutely fine as is
but go wank off to your riced off arch + i3 setup, I'm sure the 150+ hours you spend configuring it to get 10% better draw speeds will pay off when you show off in a screenfetch thread.

>>
>>61802005
Why would you care if somebody else cares that somebody else again is using a Mac?

Maybe he cares about that for the same reason you care what he cares about. Ever think about that?
>>

>>
>>61801984
I'm not measuring it but it's way << 1 second on my machine.
I could see that if you want to resize shit every few seconds you'll consider it annoying.
For my use case, I have 2 different profiles (internal only vs internal + external display connected), with a few rules to make my dev experience comfy in all circumstances.
e.g. external mode: email/calendar in a monocle on my laptop screen, bsp on my main window with iterm/chrome
internal mode: emacs/chrome fullscreen, one screen in bsp mode reserved for iterm, etc

I primarily use it to change between different windows/desktops and still use tmux/Emacs windows for my splitting needs.
If you want to manage all your splits via your WM that may not work as well, but I'm super happy with this setup

The cost of a product is one of the most important factors in its value to consumers. Most people could afford to pay $20 for a candy bar if they really wanted to, but the fact that it's so overpriced greatly diminishes the value it has to prospective buyers. I could just as well get a bunch of cheaper candy and eat it over the course of a month.

How do I make chunkwm stop wasting my screen by surrounding every window with blank space?

chunkc set global_desktop_offset_top 0
chunkc set global_desktop_offset_bottom 0
chunkc set global_desktop_offset_left 0
chunkc set global_desktop_offset_right 0
chunkc set global_desktop_offset_gap 0

chunkc set desktop_padding_step_size 0
chunkc set desktop_gap_step_size 0

None of that seems to work. Why would a tiling windowmanager default to such terrible behavior? 90% of the reason people use tiling managers is to take better advantage of their screen space...

Seriously, why aren't there threads like the ThinkPad autist threads for Macbooks?

I'm not even shitposting, surely there is a comprehensible list of the good Macbooks to date, even if nowdays they aren't so hot, that couldn't have been the case for the last decade.
>>
>>61802942
yeah. My only issue is the keyboard seems a little hard to type on, like the keys need a lot of strength to go down. Have you had that problem?

>>
>>61801662
You can use better snap/touch tool for manual tiling. Works nicely and is fast.

>>61803181

>>

>>
>>61803275
I guess you can't besides monitoring your shit for 5 minutes to see. BST is an App Store app so it's in the walled-garden, if that makes you feel better for some reason. I've used BST for years now, it's dead simple and gets the job done for fast manual tiling. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
>>
>>61801611
>>61801699
Except these window managers can only be used with X11 programs. Native MacOS software can't be used with it, rendering any benefit of using MacOS moot if you want to use the WM and vice versa.
>>
>>61803360
No, chunkwm is working with native MacOS software for me. But it's not very good, apparently you need to sink 6 gorillion autism hours into configuring this sort of thing to get the nice user friendly behavior something like AwesomeWM gives you out of the box.

gd: "hello, i have a problem, when i try to load safari, the computer begins to slow down and safari never loads"
as: "Hello, sir. Im afraid this is an issue with the mac itself. I can refer you to the apple stores website to see what the latest mac book has to offer or we can arrange a replacement"
