The best free email provider for your own domain is zoho.com It's very feature rich and in my opinion the best alternative to gmail.

If you want privacy you can pay for protonmail or mailbox.org

If you want to meet somewhere in the middle, relatively many features and improved privacy compared to Google, then you go for fastmail.

Thanks, I'm considering Proton, as it has a free tier to try it out, and relatively cheap subscription for custom domains. I'll look into Zoho though.
