This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

What does /g/ think of the SKX007? I've been wondering if it would look silly with a NATO strap, the standard rubber strap it comes with is really chunky compared to the timepiece and super uncomfortable.

Ah, in that case it's too early for you to get into vintage watches. it's an area where you need to be able to do your own research and know what to look for yourself.

I also wouldn't spend anywhere near $2,500 on a watch until you've taken some time and learned a little bit about watches and figure out what you like and what you don't. If you buy something now based on what other people tell you, you may find you don't like it anymore once you start developing your own taste in watches.

That being said, if you are dead set on looking at pre-owned watches in that price range ASAP, I've heard that Watchfinder is the best place to look in Toronto for nicer pre-owned watches.

>Very high amplitude
So it looks like my 5256 isn't an anomaly in that regard. My does ~280 dial up and ~310 on the wrist.

With that amplitude it probably only needs a regulation to show what it's capable of. Mine needed a service but then I was able to contain its beat error to +/- 0.1ms in six positions and mine runs pretty close to +0 SPD in all six positions too.

>sapphire crystal
Would have been mineral crystal originally, but switching to a generic sapphire is fairly common on them.

>>
>>61799199
Leave it to some numale to somehow not be capable of wearing a watch without destroying it.
>>
>>61799302
It's not even the numale's fault, it's just that one piece straps exert a lot of force on the lugs which causes them to eventually pop, scratching the lugs.
>>
>>61799302
To be fair, cheapestnatostraps perlon straps are really stiff. However, there is no reason they should have dislodged one of his spring bars. He would have managed to mess it up regardless of the strap.
>>

Hey, so I was thinking about getting the Seiko SNK809 with a brown leather strap similar to pic related cuz i'm a poorfag and want an automatic. My only problem is the size of 37mm and an 18mm strap would be to small and look childish.
Is 37mm to small for a guy 6'2" with about 6.75in wrists?
>>
>>61799402
Sauce? I never wear the one I bought since it's so stuff so I'd be willing to try it out?
>>
>>61799522
You have tiny wrists and it doesn't matter how big you are that is a good size for a watch. Given how tiny your wrists are i would not even go that much larger than 37mm desu.
>>
>>61799549
why did you not just get a eulit?
>>

>>
>>61799573
I have also purchased an Eulit kristal, and it was also disappointingly stiff. It was an improvement over the chepestnato one, but not worth the price. The only perlon I have been happy with as far as stiffness was the 'premium' one I got from watchbandit. It is probably worth noting I have not tried any double weave perlons, and those look pretty comfy.

One of the Lord Marvel owners on /wt/ posted last thread that their Lord Marvel's 5740C movement was somehow produced by Daini Seikohsa.

It is absolutely the first time I've ever heard of such a thing, and I am going to go on some of the specialist vintage Seiko forums and see if anyone has any idea how that is possible.
>>
>>61800844
Seiko used to be split into two divisions that competed as rivals between the 1950s and 1980s. They had separate movement designs, watch designs, and manufacturing and only shared marketing during this period.

The two divisions were Suwa Seikosha (today Seiko Epson) and Daini Seikosha (today Seiko Instruments). Today Seiko Epson owns Orient (which operates totally independently), still makes some specialized quartz components for Seiko watches, but is otherwise unrelated to Seiko's current watchmaking business.

Seiko Instruments has the modern Seiko watch company, Credor and Grand Seiko under it. When the modern Grand Seiko was founded they actually used some veterans of Daini Seikosha to do so as the Daini half of Seiko had always been the better mechanical movement designers.

In the case of Ali cracking down, it is now possible to get bagles and Nomos homages, but they no longer advertise them as Nomos watches or Rolex. Additionally, all the hits on Ali now come up with watch bands. However, on websites such as DHgate, you can still get DW watches. Yo look at the hands it's radium for sure. That color is an indicator. If you breathe that dust it's not good. Pic related is a chrono I have which I know is radioactive
>>
>>61805128
Shit, thanks for telling me. Will resell it as soon as it arrives.
>>
>>61805162
I mean if you really wanted to play around you could get a geiger counter because it's not a FOR SURE for sure I'm not a wizard. But chances are it is especially from that era. Your call.
>>
I need some strap inspo pics for a SARB033.
>>
>>61805256
But just to be sure, is the radiation from radium or breathing its dust what is extremely harmful?
Do I get radiated by just holding the watch in my hand like on your pic? Or is it just dangerous if I open it?
If it's just breathing it what is actually harmful maybe there's no danger if I open the case back to try to fix the hairspring, since the dust supposedly can't leak from the dial into the back of the watch.
>>
>>61805397
The breathing is the bad part. You can hold it in your hand and wear it for 50 years and still have less dose than an x-ray. If it were me I wouldn't open it but if you have a mask maybe you're fine. Your call anon.
>>
>>61805162
It's safe as long as you don't ingest it, but obviously you want to open it which means you'll get dust everywhere. I wouldn't do it at home but I guess you'll probably be fine with a HEPA mask or something and some thorough cleanup when you're done.

>>61805397
If you're opening the caseback there will be dust. What's harmful is breathing in the radioactive dust and having radioactive particles inside your body for a long time, just holding the watch in your hand or wearing it won't do anything. Radium is a lot more dangerous than tritium and radium paints are usually much more radioactive than tritium paints and remain radioactive for thousands of years while tritium has a half life of about 12 years.

Thanks for the interesting info, anons. This sounds like a big deal, I don't see myself risking myself for a 15€ watch desu.

So what's the general consensus about Casio Edifice? And how do they differ from the G shocks.
I think they look cool but are they worth it the pricetag of sometimes up to 300 bucks?
>pick related
>>
>>61801066
Yea that would be my LM. I wish I knew what year it was from. I could take a pic of the inside of the caseback, but it just says "Daini Seikosha" on it (while the other side has the suwa logo on it).

I got one for my dad. He travels a lot and it could connect to his phone and auto set the time zone. It was solar as well. It had a lot of useful and cool technology in it as well as not needing a battery change. Pretty much a perfect set and forget watch for him to take something else off his mind. I had a look on their website and can't seem to find the same one.
Anyway it's the type of watch I would get my dad as I know what he wants and uses a watch for but it isn't one I think I would get myself. I think they have an interesting look but it's not up my alley.
>>
>>61806747
subpar to oceanus
>>
>>61806922
>>61806961
I definetly want a Casio but I'm unsure which to get.
The g shock steel ones look neat (I dislike the rubber look) but the Oceanus and Bluetooth Edifice both look great too.
However I don't know if the Bluetooth thing is just a meme because I mean I'm on my phone most of the times anyways.
>>
>>61806747
I'm partial since it was my first watch, but some of them are great. Others are also very ugly. I am definitely not a fan of the one you posted. I wouldn't pay 300 for one, but I'm happy with the 70 I payed for mine.

ice poseidon's watch. just curious

My first guess would be a milgauss, however the non 3-6-9 indices should be more visible than that on a real milgauss.

Guys I'm fairly new to this whole watch business and I wanted to ask where to fuckin start.
The first watch I'll probably buy now is the Seiko SKX007 because it appeals to me in both looks and durability.
But what next?
Do I slowly expand my collection from there, should I have a watch for every occasion?
Would I buy them beforehand or when the time has come.

What's your story
>>
>>61807797
buy a cheap beater and dress watch for now.. save up and get a real collection. If you can afford a better watch than an skx just buy it first and don't wast the 250 dollars you'll spend on it and a decent bracelet. Also don't fall into the mod trap.. just like with cars its better to buy the nicer model than to modify the car. A turbo civic is not a ferrari

This >>61807826
Just start with a simple beater and a dress watch first then lurk more, slowly gain new knowledge then venture into big brand so you don't regret buying a watch because it's doesn't match your taste.
>>
someone is trying to sell me this but unable to give me the model number...id please?
>>
>>61807826
>>61807887
Well the thing is I don't have the money as a "poor student".
I was looking at the more budget oriented watches.
Of course I'd really like a Rolex or Omega but right now that's out of question. So I though the SKX is a good choice and I really dig the diver design.

My idea was to wear it as a everyday watch. And as you guys suggested I'll buy a dress one too.
What are the rules for dress watches though?
My wrists are rather thick so really small watches don't really fit me. Can you also wear big diameter watches as a dress watch or does that look pretentious or arrogant
>>
>>61807797
Get skx
Boil rubber strap to shape it to your wrist perfectly
Get a nato or two

And then you can decide what you want to do next. You don't need to plan out your next watch when you don't even have your skx
>>
>>61807950
The skx is excellent. I am actually going to purchase one soon as well. Unless your wrists are 8 inches or more its really better to wear a sub 40mm dress watch but that i totally up to you.
>>
>>61807966
>>61807956
Yeah that was basically my idea. Get the SKX and save up from that point.
I didn't want to get something really cheap like those fashion watches.
I wanted to express that I atleast got some taste.

So would you rather save up for a really expensive one (like talking anything Innereien from 2 to 6 k) or get a 200 to 300 dollar watch every now and then?

Yea diver and somewhat dressy casual watch is the way to start. Just don't sink too much money in buying too many mid range watches if your goal is to eventually get into Rolex watches.
>>
>>61808030
The left one is really beautiful.
What watch is that and would it be considered a dress watch?
>>
>>61808059
SARB033 and it is a dressy sport watch. Versatile. Some would say cult classic.

This is neither though.
>>
>>61808069
Thanks! So from what I've looked up so far in the last couple of days I really dig Seiko watches. I don't know why but I feel they're not too expensive while still offering respectable build quality.

By the way in which category would the everyday chronograph fall you usually see on the majority of people's wrists?

Don't buy a pile of cheap shitters, you only wear one watch every day anyway. I like my SKX, I don't see anything wrong with having a couple of cheap shitters you like, but don't have piles and piles of shit you're never going to wear. I'd rather have one $2000 watch than four $500 watches, I don't know about you.
