If what you need isn't in the official repository, it'll almost definitely be in the AUR (Arch User Repository). There's no hunting for / adding ppas or googling how to install something. It's as simple as looking up the name of the package on the official website, and then doing a
sudo pacman -S [package name]

> to run Arch linux with Gnome on full capacity as developers intended it to be
Can you elaborate on that? What's this full capacity?
>>
>>61795135
Well, it kinda runs okish but lags every other time. My laptop has 1.7 GHz i3 3rd gen processor. Not powerful enough to run it smoothly. Ya, it's an old laptop. I will get a new one soon.
>>
>>61795166

>>

Yup, same. No GPU on this laptop. Otherwise it works great. But I heard 3.26 will be on some new level. Can't wait to try it.
>>
>>61790106
Bleeding edge is a meme.
>>
>>61790106
Because I like openSUSE Tumbleweed better. openSUSE guys have great tools for automatad package testing. That makes Tumbleweed a lot more stable than Arch or Debian (passive testing is so 2014). The main drawback, however, is that Tumbleweed makes using proprietory drivers very uncomfortable.
Also, minimal systems are a meme. There isn't any noticable boost in speed (look at how snappy Solus is, even if you install all the packages it has in the repos). Minimal systems get in your way because you'll always have to install some additional dependencies for some new tool that you'll need to use. I like my system to be a work environment, not a museum of rightly grouped packages.

Arch has been in MY experience more stable than anything else.

I'd say this is simply because arch adds very little *glue* between their packages. There's not a lot that's arch specific that can go wrong, bugs are typically upstream.

And if there is any programming is something shitty, like hello world or fizzbuzz. There is no arch user that actually does anything productive.
>>
The community. It's an average distro like any other, most similar to Ubuntu really. Many Ubuntu users, satisfied they've installed 'linux' will feel like elite hackers, although it's an easy task. Similarly, many Arch users, upon installing 'linux, from the command line!' will be satisfied and screen about it.
Arch doesn't provide anything special. It has a more bloated base than Debian, Ubuntu, or Fedora from a netinstall, but with Arch the user's only option is to copy exactly what the wiki says to install it because an installer would be too easy.
Unlike other more difficult distros, it offers no real advantage to this and users don't customize their systems.
The main benefit would be the wiki, and that the package availability rivals Ubuntu.

Unironically, you would be better off and smarter for using Ubuntu from a netinstaller than Arch or a close-to-arch derivative like Antergos or Manjaro.

It has its purposes, but the community elitism kills an otherwise meh distro.

Can you name some things you're doing with your OS which Linux can't.

I am just curious.

Over half my steam library would be rendered useless with Linux
Hardware incompatibility because there's no Linux drivers
WINE is another one that's utterly useless.

Wine is not a problem, it's a solution for a problem(if you're still using some retarded legacy software).

What hardware are you using? I've got 2 1151+Nvidia PCs and a 1155 laptop+gt540m. The only problem I had was with POS printer which I've bought from Aliexpress, and that was expected(but that shiet was too cheap), but I've managed to find the way to make it work too.

Tell me please, why do you need Wine. And what hardware you're using which is not supported by Linux.

I have a dayjob, no time or energy to spend an evening piecing my OS together from a wiki (which is awesome I have to admit)

If Arch or Gentoo had installers I'd probably use them, yes I've tried their friendlier derivatives such as Manjaro, Antergos, Calculate Linux, they all failed in one way or the other and I'm sick of derivatives.

Ubuntu LTS get stale.

OpenSUSE has been comfortable for now, until I fuck it up by installing too many unofficial repos because OpenSUSE repos are fucking barren.
Also ZFS for default filesystem when?

There's only one downside to using arch as a desktop, nothing is customized out of the gate, and by nothing I don't just mean themes and shit you keep to your liking, but scripts written and maintained by the devs of larger distros that don't typically go upstream. There's also shit that skips the mind like font rendering, compositing and international fonts.

Most recent in memory, the new superkey rules in Ubuntu Mate.

took me less than a day to get my desktop up and running with a basic window manager and applications.
Could easily get a base install in less than an hour now after getting the hang of it.
Found the installation instructions fairly straight forward.
Its the customising after the basic install that took me forever and a half.
Only took that long because I was trying to figure out shit like GPU pass-through, network drive with samba, automated rsync scheduled backup script, i3wm+xfce4 config, MFTP to connect to phone's sd card, etc...

The arch wiki is fairly thorough, and AUR was helpful though I'd rather not heavily rely on it.
