I would recommend you to use xfce

Firefox is quick
Chromium and LO take hours, just use the -bin version unless you're a total autist.
I don't use GNOME but the initial build will take a long time due to the huge number of packages. Updates should be pretty quick though.

Yes. Compiling shit is almost as easy as using a package manger itself.

If you want a really good one install devuan or openbsd

slackware is a pain in the ass to manage deps on if you use a lot of different software. It's great as a limited use thing like a hypervisor or a web server where you don't install new stuff on it often, but I'd never want to use slack for my desktop.
