Ravu is working with angle for some people, so it's probably because mpv doesn't run without angle-flip=no on my machine.

That looks like aliasing to me. I'd suggest getting a better source but it doesn't look like there's much out there and I'm not sure if the aliasing is present in the original DVD itself or what (I don't know much about video but I think it's possible they were always there but the problem resolved itself on crappy CRTs of the era).

https://nyaa.si/view/328346
>While these raws have some obvious flaws (interlacing, aliasing, framerate/panning problems, possible overbrightness), they’re the best source out there.

The usual way to deal with aliasing is by using some amount of blurring. Though there are probably better ways of fixing it on mpv that I'm not aware of (maybe there's some shader or some scaler trick).

For free/g-sync, in theory you want to keep display-sync *off* (i.e. set video-sync=audio), and it should just work out assuming the drivers are doing the correct thing.
>>

Try disabling vd-lavc-dr. Also try figuring out which of the passes is causing the slowdown. Try also disabling GPU frequency scaling. Also try generating a stats dump.

Do the deband and interpolation actually work in conjunction with hwdecoding? I was under the impression that these features only functioned if swdecoding.
>>
>>61776234
Depends on the hardware decoder
>>
>>61776234
Also interpolation always works regardless of hwdec, and debanding always runs - the output can just be low quality when using hwdecs that do RGB conversion
>>

>Using hardware decoding (vaapi).

Is this one compatible with deband?

If the log says it's using vaapi-egl. If it's vaapi-glx, then it will introduce severe quality reduction.

Get rid of --opengl-pbo if you're using it.
>>
>>61769147
>>61769205
>>61769263
It's not because of --angle-flip=no. --angle-flip only changes how the video image is presented to the window, it doesn't affect rendering. I'd bet it's not working for you because you have an older graphics card without FL 10_1/OpenGL ES 3.0 support, but the only way to know for sure is with a log.
>>
>>61769504
mpvhq was haasn's old fork of mpv. It used to have some unique features, but they've all been merged into mpv now and haasn commits directly to mpv.
>>
>>61772566
>What would cause this many mistimed and delayed frames?
opengl-backend=win. WGL does not synchronize correctly with the compositor on Windows. You have to use opengl-backend=dxinterop or opengl-backend=angle with display-sync or you'll get unavoidable dropped frames. If you want to use DR, but dxinterop doesn't work for you, you're fresh out of luck.

If you want to stick with opengl-backend=win anyway, try opengl-dwmflush=auto.
>>

No, sharpeners and super-resolutions are for sharper and/or more detailed results, and these prescalers like nnedi3 and ravu are for smoothness of edges.

Yes, of course. To lesser degree if youre watching movies with same resolution as your monitor. For example SSSR works very good with movies. If you cant see the difference then i guess your eyesight is very poor or SSSR is disabled for you.

I downloaded SG-1 DVD remuxes and they are grainy as hell. The one filter I found (cycle-denoise.lua) practically does nothing.

No. It's to provide smooth display of variable framerates under 60Hz. Not to display every framerate imaginable. My monitor only goes to 48Hz, Somewhere around 30 if I install different firmware.
It's an alternative to v-sync which locks you to 60 or 30, allowing you to play around 60.

Interpolation blends frames for smoother motion though. G/Freesync don't do that say if you're playing 24FPS on a 60Hz monitor. Only works properly if refresh rate is multiples of 24 or whatever the video frame rate is.

Yes of course it can't go up to 100000 Hz and above, but I'm not asking it to be faster, I'm asking it to be SLOWER. This is COMPLETELY possible and the *only* limitation is developer laziness / incompetence.

the bigger question is whether anyone would want to support yet another graphics backend. Especially considering that as far as I'm aware, you can't feed Metal with GLSL or SPIR-V, so it would need to have completely separate shaders.

I think I read in another thread that wm4 would like to write a DX backend with an HLSL converter, wouldn't be feasible to do the same with the Metal shading language?
Honestly, if thecnically possibile, this would be the safest and most future proof choice: OpenGL for slightly old/legacy hardware, Vulkan for the new one, DX for win, Metal for OsX, everything with pretty much the same feature set.
>>
>>61782196
You probably can, by using some lavfi to double/triple every frame.

Set cscale to bilinear or gaussian. Good performance boost and the quality loss is unnoticeable for most videos. You can also try deband=no, but that's a much bigger hit on video quality especially if you're watching shitty encodes.

Audio codec doesn't matter.

- x264 hw decoding is only 8 bit, which sucks.
- VP9 hw decoding is somewhat widespread, and VP9 software decoding is *stupidly* fast. (Like even faster than hardware decoding)
- x265 hw decoding exists in most devices that also support VP9 hwdec but x265 sw decoding is slow as shit.

So I say go for VP9 and don't worry about the audio codec
