This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

Ok, how can we make timekeeping unnecessarily complicated? Oh I know, how bout a clusterfuck of moving parts instead of using quartz like basically all timekeeping systems that actually matter!

And if it's mass produced rube goldberg machines in a fast moving assembly line it's "horological virtue" or whatever the fuck you retards love to say.

Mech watches are jewelry you tremendous faggot. I should know, I have a decent collection of them.

And given that they are JEWELRY and not TECHNOLOGY, they had damm well better look good, and the new cocktail time looks even worse than the previous generation. They should have gone smaller and thinner, instead they upsized even more and made them far more hideous than they were to begin with, which was pretty damm hideous.

Looks like a decent sized chrono that would fit well into any wrist. The chronograph complication should put this watch into the sportswatch section, but i think that the conservative dial design and the leather strap would make this piece work well with more formal clothing too. You have well refined taste my friend.

Watches are a serious business and reviewing them requires a finely tuned mind and understanding of horology. When a timepiece doesn't cost more than a years wage, it doesn't mean it is not a good, elegant piece with history.

because your wrist expands and contracts, wearing it so that it's not uncomfortably tight when the wrist is at full size may mean it's decently loose when it's at it smallest.

I'm around. One of my LM Specials is exactly a 5206-6020, I just switched a blue sunburst dial into it because I liked the dial a lot.

The case style and shape is very similar to that on a King Seiko 5246-6000 and you should be warned it wears a bit small. In general you should expect the 5206/5216 to have been less finely adjusted at the factory than the King Seiko versions and to often have less amplitude. My LM Specials all tend to run ~220 degrees dial up and have all been easily regulated to within +/- 2 SPD using the micro-regulator.

Also keep in mind that the 5206 has ZERO quickset damage protection so make sure you NEVER try to use the quickset for the day/dat between 9pm and 3am on the watch (which you should never do on a vintage watch otherwise).

Looks fine, edges on the case look nice and crisp indicating no polishing. Hands and dial don't appear grungy, so likely no water damage. You'll probably need to replace the crystal, but I would go with a generic sapphire crystal as it really looks good on the watch.

Do you have a watchmaker well versed in working on vintage watches? If you don't, find one.

When it comes to accuracy, the skmei will propably be your most accurate time piece.

You weren't around for the drama I assume then. TGV was friends with archie, and even paid him to review his watches and promote his channel. Later went and called him a racist, and called other watch youtubers philistines and shit, and him and grobnob made fake accounts to troll others.

At least some of the videos detailing the drama and presenting information about TGV and his antics have been taken down, I can only guess why, it's been a couple years now. The height of drama was mid to late 2015. And I don't think I ever saved anything to my hard drive. All I know is at the time I was presented with enough information to confirm its legitimacy. There may be stuff still out there to find on it but I do not see much of it still around.

Babby's first cheap """"Swiss"""" watch problem:

Please advise:

I bought it about three years ago and saw that the time was off. I tried resetting the time to the correct one but then the second hand got stuck and looked like it was moving minimally almost twitching. I put it into time set mode by pulling the dial at that point to not damage it.

I assume the battery has reached the end of its life but when I popped the back off the second hand started moving again normally.

Are the mechanics damaged?

Brown lume is hot shit right now on newly produced, vintage-inspired watches (Steinhart, etc.). I wonder when they'll start making yellow-tinted crystals.

Also reminder to replace the yellowed crystals when restoring vintage watches, no matter how good they look. They're actually bad for the watch.

Just so you are aware the new ones have qc issues and they use some new flame fusion crystal and its impossible to remove the cyclops. The bezel is also more difficult to remove.

If you don't give an absolute fuck about your appearance and/or watches, one.
If you do care a little about your appearance, three: a dress watch, sport/water resistance watch, beater watch.
>>
>>61777407
Yes. It depends on your use of the watch, as well as what else you subject it to. It is possible to take the insert out and accelerate the fading.

>>61776494
Well, in that case go ahead. I didn't actually know the bagelmeme had hacking.

>>61774821
It can shimmer a bit, but it was overblown a bit in that photo because of the lighting.

>>61777937
Absolute minimum is zero. I like having many different watches, but others prefer having only a few. Just get what you like and will wear.

I would buy a pre-'97 Rolex ASAP while you can still get the last of them for relatively cheap. I think for collectors in the future the pre-and-post radioactive dials is going to be a huge demarcation line for the price and collectability of vintage Rolex watches. Not just because tritium dials age really well and superluminova looks like shit that glows even in daylight, but because that's really the end of Rolex being a proper tool watch, as after that point they made everything certified chronometers and raised the price point a lot higher to compete in the same field as Jaeger LeCoultre.

If I wasn't a poorfag I'd get a 14270 Explorer, a 16700 GMT-Master (man on the fucking moon), and a 14060 No-Date Submariner. I mean even now there's not a lot from that era (let alone previously) that can still be gotten cheap in the steel sports category.

The 14270 with the tritium dial and the drilled lugs. I don't like the no-holes case and superluminova is ugly.

Pic unrelated, unobtanium grail.
>>
>>61779093
The problem with the 14270 is that the tritium only on the index, the numbers don't have them, and it's still young so i wonder if the patina in the future will be to my liking or not.

Yeah the numbers not having the lume bugs my autism but then again once those watches age it might create a cool looking creamy-orange and white contrast between the two.

Of course the 1016 Explorer is the best but they cost like $10,000.
