Back then, it was called Firebird because it symbolized the mythical phoenix bird that rose from the ashes of the then-defunct Netscape/Mozilla browser (which was a decent browser back in the days). However, there was some trademark issue with "Firebird" so they changed it to Firefox. Back then, I didn't like this change and thought it was random, but the public since then have become accustomed to it since.

I've worked on open source before in an official capacity, I can tell you "open source" is just a farce and a publicity stunt. In reality, nobody in the public can really work on the source code because the intelligence and the know-how is reserved internally and it's difficult to reach the actual developers at times and management will sometimes act as a gate-keeper. In addition, open source does other than help make the developers to make a name for themselves since everything they do is "public" and it makes them that much more marketable.

>>
>>61747973

it irks me when people complain that firefox is slow and gets sluggish over time given that these are the same people who also complain about firefox going multiprocess, rust code, and most importantly ditching legacy addons, you can create a brand new firefox profile right now and install legacy addons that significantly impact performance from startup times (adding a good .5-1 second to startup time every time) to addons that add a perceivable delay to loading new pages

firefox is going to lose a shit ton of good and useful addons but it's something the browser has needed to do for years, at worse it's going to be a worse chrome however OP's benchmarks suggest otherwise, and at best it's going to be a better chrome that isn't chrome, what more could you want, contrast this where if firefox kept the legacy addon system it'd still be the same 10 year old browser forever playing catchup to chrome where a single plugin brings the whole browser down and you need to refresh your profile every few months or the browser grinds to a halt

> I can tell you "open source" is just a farce and a publicity stunt. In reality, nobody in the public can really work on the source code (...)
It usually is these days. But not always.

Open-source however does not inherently mean anyone can contribute. It simply means the source is openly available. Whether a maintainer chooses to be open to collaboration through any way is completely up to them. Simply because it's difficult to contribute to a project doesn't mean it's just a farce. And not always do maintainers give a damn about communicating with outside collaborators, as that would cost time if there are many.

I agree with the management thing though. Management needs to fuck off out of the repositories.

Auto-update is enabled by default and you can enable/disable userscripts from the icon in the toolbar. The problem here doesn't seem to be "freetards" but rather you inability to utilize what little brain power you have.
