High quality config:
profile=opengl-hq
scale=ewa_lanczossharp
cscale=ewa_lanczossoft
tscale=oversample
video-sync=display-resample
interpolation

Getting freezes under Windows? Add
angle-flip=no
to your mpv.conf.
If MOUSE_BTN3 and MOUSE_BTN4 aren't working in your input.conf, try using AXIS_UP and AXIS_DOWN to control scrollwheel.

mpv is much faster at everything
mpv has much better subtitle rendering
mpv has very competent developers
>>
>>61740648
So T.V until mpv is not demanding then?
>>
>>61740692
mpv's performance improves over time, but it's not really mpv's fauit
the best upscalers included with mpv look very good and are therefore quite difficult to run, and there's a limit to how much their performance can be improved
>>
>>61740692
I'd suggest trying
profile=opengl-hq

which is a bit demanding
if you can handle that, add:
profile=opengl-hq
scale=ewa_lanczossharp
tscale=oversample
video-sync=display-resample
interpolation

this is as good as you can get without user shaders
>>
I just wrote an opengl shader to view 360 degree video, but I had to hardcode in the viewing angle. Is there any way to interact with the variables in the shader, especially while mpv is running so I can continually change the viewing angle?

I've never understood why anyone would need them for a video player (inb4 you are dumb enough to use it as a music player), most of the time it just messes up your actual music player.

You could solve this by configuring mpv to setup an IPC server and configuring those hotkeys globally to trigger the corresponding mpv command via the IPC.

That's how I have it set up for my music player (mpd) too, btw. In my xmonad.hs I just bind the hotkey combinations I wnat to run “MPD.play” or “MPD.pause”.

>does it mean we can't use advanced features on windows with angle like interpolation, ravu prescaler or ICC profile?
No. Interpolation and colour management definitely work on Windows with ANGLE. I don't know about RAVU because I don't use it. Compute shaders don't work because ANGLE only supports GLES 3.0.

>Does it mean madVR is the only solution now?
Of course not. You don't have to use ANGLE. You can still use --opengl-backend=dxinterop or --opengl-backend=win, which give you full desktop OpenGL support, same as on Linux.
>>
Is it nvidia drivers, ffmpeg or mpv fault that GPU clock is always at the highest speed when using cuda hwdec? Can anyone verify if it's the same with NVIDIA CUVID in LAVFilters?
>>
>>61742942
>>61742276
Yeah, basic support for media keys was added, but there is no support for global hotkeys yet. That's the next step. It's not hard to add support for global media keys, but there are several different ways of doing it, each with its own tradeoffs, so I have to decide on a solution. For example, some methods don't support all keys and some will steal key input from the foreground application, even if it's another media player.

>>61743003
Yeah, "messing up your actual music player" is a legit concern, so I'm not sure I want to steal all input from media keys, just input that's unhandled by the foreground app, eg. if the app that has keyboard focus supports media keys, they're delivered to it, but if it doesn't, they're delivered to mpv instead.

It's not totally useless to have local media key support though, because if you support media keys, you also support MCE remotes, so now I can play a video in mpv, sit back in my chair and control it with a remote.
>>
>>61743819
Without the benefits of advanced filters, I prefer Videostream plugin for chrome browser. It's free and chromecast compatible.

Does using
vd-lavc-dr=yes
help with frametiming?
Also do you happen to have a monitor with a refresh rate of 120/144hz? Because it calculates the frametimes to be red based around your refresh rate so they might just be fine if you ran at 60hz instead.

Pretty much impossible to compare without two of the same TVs side by side, with one having all the image settings turned off and outputting from mpv on computer. Here's what 4K looks like compared to 1080 upscaled to 4K on a 2015 Vizio. TVs all have super proprietary upscaling engines, and companies easily put in millions of dollars into the tech. Do you really think OEMs don't consider basic scaling algos like Lanczos before they make their TVs?

For example, a subtitle is set to be displayed at 5 seconds and lasts for another 5. If I am in 15 seconds and rewind to 7, it won't show, unless I rewind back to before 5 seconds.

Who the heck knows? It's all proprietary from the processor to the algorithms. You can go and hack a TV and find out for yourself if you really want to know. One thing I have seen is that most 4K TVs upscale text almost perfectly (no blur, perfectly sharp) which I don't think anything in mpv does. Sony's upscaler does seem to use something similar to neural at least.
>>
>>61753978
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/113824
Oh and I forgot the other comparison. Native 1080 on 1080 screen vs 1080 upscaled to 4K on a 4K screen. Do note that these are samples from Rtings of 2015 Vizio models, and the images are taken from a camera. Vizio always had shitty upscaling on their TVs. Looks a bit like lanczossharp here. And my best guess is most TVs have adaptive scalers that change algos depending on the scene.
>>
So guys, I realize you don't like me or anyone bashing mpv but this REALLY annoys me:

- playing a movie with surround audio on my surround receiver through pulseaudio works just fine, but
- if I want to play a surround movie with my headphones mpv will by default just happily output the two stereo channels and drop the rest of the audio

unless I start mpv with --audio-channels=2

but I obviously can't have audio-channels=2 in mpv.conf because then I just get stereo on my surround receiver.

It's trivial to add that to the command line, I know, but not when I launch a movie from a file-manager like thunar.

Ideally I'd like mpv to just get the number of channels available from pulseaudio and act accordingly. But no. It can't do it.

First you gotta learn a few things about light, anon:

1) In the real world colors aren't actually RGB. For instance: when you look at a red object it's actually putting off a bunch of light all over the spectrum (it just so happens that a lot more of the light is around the red area of the spectrum so in the end it looks red).
2) Humans have rods and cones that primarily allow them to see Red, Green, and Blue light. So, in a way you could argue that humans see in RGB (dogs and other animals have different sets of rods and cones and rely on colors elsewhere in the spectrum for vision, so TV's look all fucked up to animals).
3) There's a bunch of different display technologies that allow one to output visuals in RGB (that to the human eye look similar to the real world). However, different devices have different capabilities and to my knowledge none are capable of outputting all of the colors that the human eye can see. Moreover due to variations in pixel technology and such two devices given the same signal may output slightly different colors.
4) Because of the limitation mentioned in 3, people will physically measure the capabilities of the screen using another device. With these measurements one can create something called an "ICC profile" which will alter the colors outputted by the device in order to more closely match the intended color. That is to say: different displays calibrated with ICC profiles should output similar colors on the same input.
5) You can purchase a device and perform the tests yourself to create an ICC profile though some monitors will actually come with one created by the manufacturers (check their website or something). Once you have an ICC profile, you can install it on your operating system and colors should be balanced automatically. I think mpv's auto-icc option will just load whatever ICC profile you've told your OS to use (not really sure about this).

For the most part only graphic designers care about this.

>Ideally I'd like mpv to just get the number of channels available from pulseaudio and act accordingly. But no. It can't do it.
That's not correct/intended/expected behavior IMO. It should always output the file as-is to pulseaudio and pulseaudio should handle the downmixing.

So this seems like an issue with your pulseaudio config, if anything.
>>
>>61755558
>Ideally I'd like mpv to just get the number of channels available from pulseaudio and act accordingly. But no. It can't do it.
Also mpv can do this, it's called “audio-channels=auto”. But it's only for ALSA etc. because those AOs have actual output channel restrictions. It doesn't work for pulse because pulse is specifically *designed* to accept anything and handle downmixing etc. itself. So you're using pulse wrong.
>>
>>61756859
>1) In the real world colors aren't actually RGB

That's right. The real world is colored by a process called CYMK. It's not hard to convert form RGB to CYMK if you want to make real colors.

All of this information is only very tangentially related to ICC profiles and color management (in mpv), and mostly misleading or even plain wrong.

>So, in a way you could argue that humans see in RGB
not really true. this is what LMS colorspace would look like, if it were mapped to R/G/B
>and such two devices given the same signal may output slightly different colors.
Not just slightly, they can be *extremely* different. Try comparing an sRGB and an AdobeRGB panel.
> With these measurements one can create something called an "ICC profile" which will alter the colors
ICC profiles (except device link profiles) don't alter colors, they profile devices. So you can use them to figure out what colors correspond to what numerical values. Btw, ICC profiles also have nothing to do with calibration.

A quick skim through of the git logs

- A new meme shader (RAVU) + massive improvements to it
- Massive amounts of work towards native vulkan/directx backends
- Support for embedded ICC profiles
- AMDGPU+mesa bug fixes and performance improvements
- Updates to user shaders API that will allow faster user shaders
- Extension of tone mapping to support high quality gamut reductions
- Big improvement of the tone mapping algorithm to prevent clipping
- Support for dynamic HDR scene peak detection
- Support for compute shaders, which make EWA sampling significantly faster
- Improved downscaling for HDR content
- Support for direct rendering, which allows faster (0-memcopy) texture uploads
- Changes to the opengl-pbo upload path to make it faster on nvidia etc.

That should about cover the important changes for the past 2-3 weeks, at least the ones concerning the video rendering

>>61758489
When will vulkan ve released? or has it proven to be difficult to use?
>>
>>61759716
Progress is slow due to complications, the big one that was stalling everything forever being the fact you can't easily load GLSL shaders in vulkan. But in theory that can change, and in the non-theory, there are a few cross-compiler options we could try and port to mpv in principle. wm4 even wanted to write his own GLSL parser.

That said, most of the core rendering logic is now essentially backend-independent, thanks to the series of RA refactors over the past 1-2 weeks. (check git commit log) So implementing vulkan would actually become a reality now as long as we can get the GLSL->SPIR-V roadblock out of the way. (There's already an nvidia-specific extension to allow loading GLSL in vulkan, which I'm hoping might become a vendor-neutral extension) wm4 also wants to implement a native directx backend, possibly by using preprocessor definitions to turn GLSL into valid HLSL. (Which is entirely possible based on the extreme similarity of the languages)

ngu aa doesn't produce any more weird artifacts than nnedi3. and there are various ngu speed presets available, covering much faster than ravu to much slower than ravu.

Yes, but ANGLE is constrained to the OpenGL API, and it has some strange quirks of its own, which mainly come about because Google only cares about ANGLE for its own use-cases (Chrome.) For example, ANGLE can't import 10-bit YUV textures from D3D11VA. This isn't a D3D limitation or an OpenGL limitation, but an ANGLE limitation, because one of their extensions is misdesigned and only supports 8-bit YUV.

2bh despite some flaws, ANGLE is still the most compatible, and in some cases, the best performing backend. It wasn't really a "mistake" to use ANGLE rather than implementing native Direct3D support, since the latter is a lot of hard work. I'm glad wm4 is doing the work now though.

Can someone recommend settings to transcode the Cosmos series from AVI to x264 or even x265 lossless?
Sorry if this is a bad thread to ask in, there isn't really a popular ffmpeg general and mpv is pretty ffmpeg related.
>>
>>61761997
/ptg/ has some encoders from time to time but it's not consistent

I lost like 20 IQ reading this
>>
>>61761547
i would guess that you're the one comparison about ngu aa artifacts. in that case the first image would be your broken ngu-aa setup. your madvr installation must be mis-configured, because those artifacts don't occur on my pc.

btw, whenever you make an image comparison, you should also upload the original unscaled image, so people can verify that you didn't mess up your configuration.

Not that anon but youre probably never bothered to zoom in that much or never bothered to compare NGU AA (not sure about other NGU's) to other scalers.

I put Mousewheel up/down to volume into the input.conf but now mousewheel does volume and the skipping too.

How can I un-bind the skipping and only bind volume to it?

this is what I have in the input.conf:

AXIS_UP    add volume 2
AXIS_DOWN add volume -2
>>
>>61763874
Try adding
MOUSE_BTN3 ignore
MOUSE_BTN4 ignore
>>
Do
mpv --input-test --force-window --idle
and bind the keys for what's causing skipping to ignore
>>
>>61764300
then nothing works :(
