while it supports lots of platforms, it's not especially optimized for any (in particular hardware acceleration or assembly optimization).
it's really meant to ubiquitous and versatile (as seen by the number of platforms, file formats, protocols, and codecs supported), not lean and fast. it's good (but not great) for general purpose use.

it does have an awful logo though

This is not a media player but a deployment ration in the new grounds, made to be delivered with parachutes.
As it don't depend on external codecs etc.., you can just build it whole in any sort of new OS or CPU architecture.
It's what you have until the reinforcements come.

Here's one reason: play a video back on vlc, screencap, play the same video on any other media player, screencap, then revel in how fucking washed out vlc is.

Also the scaling algorithm is not configurable and looks like pixel AIDS.
