>>
Just got my first T420 today and the CPU/GPU temperatures are disturbing. I have the i7-2620 processor and running Windows 7. In five minutes of turning it on and opening Firefox to install RealTemp, I was at 87 C. Left idling with a Firefox tab open it was consistantly at 60 C. I tried downloading TPFancontrol and the temperature shot up to 95 C, so I just panicked and force shut down. Again, it was only on for about five minutes total.

I'm hesitant to even try reapplying thermal paste and cleaning it now, can't imagine it will make that much of a difference, what do? Should I just try to return it?

they can't extend rearward because of the new drop hinge design, you also can't put ports on the back of the laptop with this, the old design the hinge was on 'top' of the laptop

and it literally says the battery capacity
>3-cell 24Wh
>6-cell #1 48Wh
>6-cell #2 72Wh

Wh is Watt-hours. The 3-cell gets 1/3 the life of the big one.

Personally the extended batteries is never something I have or would ever compromise on.

Yeah, looking at it now, it seems there was somehow no thermal paste on it at all, and I have never seen a fan as dirty as this in my life. I swear it even has dog hair embedded in it. It's like the damn thing was left in the corner on the floor of a musty library closet for eight years.

Part of the optical drive and underneath the keyboard is also a little bit rusty, the arrow keys are sticking a little and making loud clicking noises when depressed. Hopefully that can be fixed by cleaning as well. Wish I hadn't throw out my spare keyboard.

That looks usable at the very least. I don't care if it is glossy. The current screen is almost unusable. Colours are washed out at any angle except head-on, and the screen takes many seconds to display colours properly.

Story Time

> Anon is mentally ill and in psychiatry right now because of major depression.
> Of course Anon took his Thinkpad X230 with him, because it's mandatory for his well-being.
> Yesterday a fellow patient was moved from the secure ward to Anon's ward, sharing a room with him.
> Small, timid guy in his 50s, seemingly very nice, polite and considerate.
> At 22.30 PM yesterday anon sat in his room, with his fellow patient, just shitposting on IRC.
> Anon had to go for a smoke, so he asked his fellow patient: "There is nothing going to happen to the laptop, while I'm gone for like 5 minutes, right?"
> "Yeah, nothing's gonna happen."
> Anon thought: "Ok, nothing's gonna happen to my stuff while I'm gone for like 5 minutes" and left the room.
> After having finished the cigarette Anon returned to the room and found the laptop was gone, but the charging unit was still there.
> "Where the fuck is my laptop, Eric?"
> "I have thrown it out of the window. Sorry, I had to do this. I'm scared because I'm under surveillance."
> Anon looked out the window and saw that his precious x230 lay approximately 3 meters away, 2 meters lower than the floor of the room, on some brushwood.
> On top of that it was raining.
> Anon ran to the night warden and left the ward with him to retrieve the laptop.
> Picked it up, immediately removed the battery, went back to the ward to wipe it dry with a towel.
> After it had dried, Anon turned it back on to see if it was still working.
> TFW when it booted like the day he bought it, no damage but a small scratch on the paint.

TL;DR: My Thinkpad x230 was thrown out of a window by someone suffering from a mental illness and survived almost unscathed.
(This post was written on my precious x230)

Am I retarded if I choose to buy anything other than an old thinkpad for school? I just need something for word-processing and internet access. I'm tired of being that faggot who prints stuff out at home and takes notes on paper, it's so inefficient. I'd go full /g/ if I had the time but studying law requires me to minimize time devoted to hobbies and fun things, all my free time is devoted to /lit/ related pursuits right now. I'd rather avoid that awkward, smartphone-looking shitpile that is Windows 10 and have no need for a large amount of power because I'm not trying to run video games or anything. I don't know how to Linux and have been using Windows 7 for about 7 years now.

I thank you in advance for your sage advice.
>>
>>61710492
Oh, and for budget I'd like to spend under 500 Australiabux ideally. A cheap modern laptop that ought to meet my needs can be found for that in an electronics store but if Thinkpads are blatantly better value I might go with one if the delivery time isn't bad.
>>
>>61710492
Not retarded but foolish. I didn't used to believe in the Thinkpads but after having been fucked in the ass by Acer, I think it is probably worth trying. Refurbished thinkpads are certainly more durable and have better hardware than a lot of acers.
>>

My dad recently got a Toshiba for his work and general online stuff and he seems quite happy with that. He also has no idea what he's doing in many ways (uses new version of uTorrent, may have toolbars in his internet browser, etc...) but it does seem very fast and responsive with good battery life and a solid build to it. I do remember using thinkpads maybe 10+ years ago in school and I do remember them feeling better than modern laptops though. Mainly the hinges didn't feel like they'd rip off if you weren't gentle with them, they were built like the old Gameboys and mobile phones.

>>61710547
>Windows 10 is great
My friend told me it's shit and what little I've seen of it it looks like 7 but with slightly more awkward menus made to look sleek rather than be quick to get around with. What's the appeal? I know that I could be completely wrong here, I've never actually looked into the differences between the systems in any depth.

I've found this thing: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/computers-tablets/computers/laptops/lenovo-ideapad-100s-8p-11-6-notebook.html#

For Australiabux this seems like a fantastic price but I'm uncertain on a few details
>32GB storage
How much space does a Windows 10 install take up?
>1.6GHz
Even I know this isn't a lot.

Will this thing shit itself and die if I try to run anything more intense than a word document or give me any other trouble? The price seems too good and I feel like I'm missing the catch.

Law is the easiest subject you can do.

Batteries will have shit life if not "maintained" properly, IE you're supposed to use them, rather than leave your lappy plugged in for 3 years, then wonder why the battery doesn't work.

I have a Dell E6400. 2.66GHz i5, 8GB, and I took out the factory 250GB HDD and swapped in an SSD. Boots to Win 7 in under 10s.

Fans and HDD's are your moving parts that may need replacement in any laptop.

There are two versions, one based on ubuntu and other based on slackware, and you can use the repos of those.
You can compile your own .PET files (installation package) from source, or even better create .SFS files, which can have several applications, and choose what .SFS file(s) to mount.

X220 with an IPS display. X230(with IPS) if you have a few more shekels to spare(but I don't think spending extra on x230 would be worth it, if the primary purpose is reading). X201 Tablet user reporting in. It works okay but you kind of get what you pay for. You may be better off with a $80-$120 tablet that can run PDFs. You can pair a bluetooth keyboard to most tablets.

The X201 Tablet is a laptop first and a tablet as a distant second. The pen is probably ok for art but not for casual use, it doesn't feel right in an OS not designed for it. Maybe you'll have luck in Windows but I use Ubuntu and the OS does not suit it. I just checked the screen, and viewing angles are okay. But a few years old mid-to-high-end tablet will probably beat it on that front.

Capacitive touch on a tablet alone is enough to go with one (or a newer tablet PC).

Kindle DX (black and white obviously) is selling in your price range. I expect it to be very slow while loading a PDF, but hopefully displays them okay.

IMO, anything with an IPS display, and a decent resolution would be good. Hell, It doesn't even have to be a Thinkpad. There are the tablet versions of x-series laptops too, but they have shitty battery life and poor heating. Imo, x220 is the ideal choice. I don't know much about x60/x201 apart from the fact that they can be tranny booted.
Also, I hope you know that you can trim PDFs using briss, for comfy viewing on Kindles.
>>
>>61714983
That might help my case, but I don't know about this anon's use case. You're still using a pen to interact with the OS.

I wanted an OS with laptop features and the tablet happened to be in my price range and sounded like a fun gimmick for drawing. Android would remove my productivity.

Thanks again to whomever confirmed that the T60 and T61 use similar RAM. I found this 4:3 T61 on ebay for 50GBP and it was in pretty good condition, aside from some paint chips on the back of the screen (I made one bigger, lawl). Found out it had a single dead pixel in the bottom left corner of the screen; doesn't really bother me much. Noticed it came with a german keyboard and the seller/previous owner put stickers on the keyboard to make it like a UK one, but it looked barely used- I mean, I still feel the texture on the keys when I touch em. Took the stickers off and trying to use the german keyboard at the moment, almost used to it. Might make a T601F in the future when I get a 1600x1200 screen for my T60, but I think I'm gonna use this T61 as my main machine for a bit and install OpenBSD on the T60 instead.

Yeah, they're just much higher quality machines. The T61 was the first one Lenovo 'value-engineered' and the difference between it and the T60 (still an IBM design) is stunning when you put them side by side.

I will keep this T60 forever.

>>X40
>HOT
Actually on this X40 I run the schedutil governor, tickless clock, and use tlp and don't let it run the CPU faster than 800 MHz on battery. It literally never turns on its fan unless I'm plugged in.

It's the finest laptop ever manufactured and mine looks and feels like new. I might order a couple spares before they get pricey.

>>61716945
>but it doesn't answer some of my questions
That's because you need to actually read the whole site. Don't half ass it junior.

How much should I expect to pay for T60, x200/x220? I'm kinda looking around ebay and everything I see under 30€ seems to have some defect or no harddrive and since people on the youtubes brag about buying these for $25 or similar I kinda don't want to pay much more (although realistically speaking I probably have to..). Maybe they are cheaper in the US? I'm in Germany.

Lucky, i thought you were just using the modded drivers off the insanelymac guide that allow funky scaling.

wait what, the max option i have on display settings is 1080p.

It's one of those old kits that could cause flickering on some boards, got it used from a seller locally. Actually it does suddenly flicker sometimes but very rarely and briefly, like for half a second.

Just picked up a T470 with 32 gb ram, 256 gb ssd, HD screen, and i7-7600U. The keyboard feels weird and not quite as nice as some older thinkpads I've used. This is the first one I've owned. I'll probably get used to it but honestly probably not worth what I paid. It's new and it's fast though.

For an unmolested T60 with the IPS screen you can expect to pay at least $200.

Watch pretty much any video up to and including 720p without frame dropping with mplayer, any kind of coding (I'm working on some shit in Factor and J), web browsing works fine once you tune Firefox up for performance a bit, Openarena and Dwarf Fortress run fine, etc.

It's a fully usable computer once you have everything dialed in. For stuff like ripping your Balinese cartoons, and playing the newest SJW-infected horse shit unfun gaymes, I'm assuming you have access to a more powerful machine. This thing is built to be comfy and portable, but it still works fine today.

It's slow as fuck using Jewtube but thankfully we have youtube-dl now.

While doing a routine clean, I accidentally dipped my cloth into 99% rubbing alcohol instead of water, and ruined the plastic finish on my trackpad. I immediately realised my error and tried to wipe it off, but the bottom half is irreparable.

Quite pissed at myself for being so retarded. Considering dousing the top part of the trackpad in alcohol too to see if I can universally ruin it that way at least it will be consistent. The rest of it is in near perfect condition too, fucking kill me.

The coating will be permanently ruined as far as the appearance goes. On the other hand, if you just leave it out for a few weeks it will dry out and not come off like I'm sure it is tending to now.

Some anons just simply disassemble, strip the coating, and use the bare metal. I'd look into seeing how much a local coating place or gunsmith would charge to cerakote it myself.

>>61712291
It's all about the depth of the discharge cycle. If you discharge your battery all the way or nearly so every time it's going to wear out quickly. If you make sure to plug it in before it's halfway gone you will get thousands more cycles.

I don't think you can use the same power optimizations with an X230, it's too new. Basically it uses different governors, but the tickless would still work (and be the default at least with Debian).

https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Idle_consumptions

This will give you a rough idea of power consumption of different models, but it's kind of out of date.

So the funny thing is I bought a perfect mint condition Dell Latitude D820 Laptop with doc and extra battery for $80 total in 2015 from ebay. I still use it today but might upgrade soon.

Core 2 Duo @ 2.00 GHz
4 GB Ram (3.5 actual)
80 GB HDD
Quadro NVS 120
15.4" 1680x1050
Windows 7 Pro 32bit
Docking Station

Guy sold it so cheap because he claimed the wireless internet would not work because the switch was broken. No one would bit on it so I made an offer and got it. I just went into the BIOS and told it to enable wireless at boot and problem solved.

Thinking about getting a Latitude E series with the 15.6" display, but I might get a Precision. Depends on which one can be turned into a hackintosh or Linux box. I know the E6500s are cheap, have NVS GPU and some have backlit keys for around $100
