Drain holes are a meme

Spilled water on my thinkpad today and it ended up pooling up inside the ram slots.

It worked after drying off though. But I wouldn't fall for the water drain hole meme and continue using it next time.

Any idea where i can find an x220t or x230t down under in Aus. They seem to be very rare here and command a high price.

Which is more robust, x220 or t420?
>>
>>61724126
If you're going to upgrade the screen, you'll be better off with the t520 over the t420, as except for a rare kit, it does not upgrade to 1080p, but you can find the panel for the 15 inch of that generation.

Hard drives are designed to survive motion while in operation.

It's when you drop the thing that they can fail, but there's a sensor in your Thinkpad which will lock the drive if it detects sudden acceleration like that.

No, you don't have to worry. I have Thinkpads from the '90s with their original drives still going strong.
>>
>>61725377
>sensor in your Thinkpad which will lock the drive if it detects sudden acceleration like that.
Is that hardware enabled, or you need a specific package?
What about the sudden impact from hitting the table where you put the thinkpad?
>>
I just bought a Lenovo ideapad 310 with 8GB Ram, Intel i5-7200 2.50GHz 64 bit 128SSD. How hard did I fuck up? I'm Australian and bad with computers. I need this for school.

How bad is it to continuously adjust the screen when using T420?
Will this wear out the hinges?
>>
>>61725876
It's not bad at all. You have to do it from time to time but the hinges won't wear too fast. Just get a set of spare hinges to calm your mind. They're easily replacable.

eBay or Amazon. Just look up the type of RAM it accepts, and do a search.

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:X220
>Up to 8GB PC3-10600 DDR3 memory at 1333MHz
>16GB (2x8GB) PC3-14900 at 1866MHz possible

Just make sure to buy a 4GB stick instead of a 2x2GB set. PC3-10600 DDR3 RAM is going for under $20 on eBay and even on Amazon it's going for $20-30 for known brands.

I need a laptop strictly for Excel and Youtube that has great battery life

I've narrowed it down to either the x230 or the t430. I think 14in would be ideal, but I've never used a 12.5in screen before so I'm not really sure. The t430 I found is $100 more than the x230.

>>
Does the t420 palmrest fit in the t430 ok?
>>
>>61733209
Both yes and no. The T430 as well as T420 are particularly bad in that aspect, since on top of screen quality not really being as big of a deal at the time, Lenovo used the cheapest shittiest panels they could get their hands on in them.

For a nicer screen you can either go for a newer model, a 15.6" model (T530 and T520 share display panels with their workstation brothers W530 and W520, and as such shipped with significantly better screens than you'd get on a 14" model - the 1920x1080 ones in particular are almost on the same level as IPS panels, while the 1600x900 one is more what you'd expect from an average decent desktop TN monitor, and 1366x768 still belongs in the trash on these big laptops), or a 12" model which despite its resolution can have an IPS panel with better image quality and colour reproduction. The ordinary 12" models could have shipped with either TN or IPS depending on the original configuration options, but the tablet models are guaranteed to have IPS screens.

In short:
X220/X230 or X220t/X230t: Shit screen or nice screen depending on TN or IPS, though the 1366x768 resolution leaves much to be desired regardless.

T420/T430 or T420s/T430s: Shit screen. No matter what. They are compatible with some nicer screens, and you *can* stick a little PCB in there to make them compatible with some FHD IPS screens, but if you want a nice screen in these you'll be putting it in yourself.

T520/T530: Either shit (1366x768), decent (1600x900), or very good (1920x1080) TN panels.

I'd have to scale everything to the size of 1366x768 anyways and the better sharpness and overall quality I'd get would come at the cost of worse linux compatibility because Linux WMs are still shit when it comes to scaling.

T450 is your best bet, an E6440 might be cheaper.

>>61722331
I would think the X220 would work, maybe the Tablet and its buttons fucks things up. The unit could have a different wifi card so that might change things up.
IIRC the X61 Tablet was able to be hackintoshed, though I never tried, seemed too complicated at the time.

Anywho, keep looking at the market for 2 weeks, setup ebay notifications or save searches for T450 FHD and T440p FHD, the touchpad swap will cost you at least $30 and time.

The old IBM machines have a legacy thanks to durability, technology and innovation.
before mid 2005, there really was no point in needing a bleeding edge machine. 80's and 90's were totally OK with having a laptop or a computer for a decade, because this was pre-internet heavy times.

Models like the 755, 770, 600, 570, 365 were remembered thanks to their durability, remember this was when it was OK to use the same OS for 7 years.

When IBM transitioned to the T/X/A/R series, they went thinner, still good machines but at a cheaper cost. NASA used IBM in the past for their space missions, and used a few TPs as well. Dell, HP, Toshiba were lacking at this time, they didn't have such a 'robust' business machine. Apple did change some things with the iBook, but it really didn't change until the Core 2 Duo macbook.

Though the A3x and T4xp had god tier panels and build quality, their GPUs were dying left and right, IBM was hemorrhaging money from warranty repairs, some chum fuck sold it to Lenovo. As to why Lenovo, I'm not sure. I guess they were the biggest manufacturer for laptops/PCs in China, but didn't have much precence here.

Eventually Lenovo did design changes and took away features (of which IBM started doing since 1999 as well as build quality).

The market has changed, it is a lot different now.

But tell me anon, I want to know. Whats a reputable laptop line to you? It won't hold up to a ThinkPad, I bet.
>>
>>61738298
I haven't had a business laptop break on me and I've used Macbooks, Dells, HPs and Lenovos. The only brand that's ever stuck out as having esoteric as fuck reasons to break and shit the bed is Lenovo. And their warranty team are a bunch of retards.

honest to God question, I'm hyped to buy an X260 but the resolution is 1366x768 which leaves me worried. Can anyone using this resolution tell me whether my concerns are valid?
>>
>>61743294
or would a FHD X1 Carbon (3rd) be better? I don't like that the RAM is soldered and the battery is subpar, what are your thoughts?
>>
>>61743294
There's a 1080p option for the X260. The 768p screen is also TN panel only so it's absolute shit. BTW I don't think anyone besides cheap corporate jews ever bought the 768p option on the X260.

I'm satisfied with my X230 (768p IPS) but a higher resolution would make everything sharper. When it comes to screen space I don't think 1080p would give you an advantage because at native res text would be too damn small so you'd have to upscale the UI to match the size of 1366x768.
>>
>>61743347
>>61743338

Woops, just found out there is in fact an IPS 768p screen for the X260. Still, FHD is the only valid option.
Stay away from Carbon. Not even remotely as modular as T or X series.
>>
>>61743347
when you say option I assume you mean in the context of buying it directly from Lenovo. They don't sell those new anymore over here in the Netherlands I'm afraid. All the second hand models I can find have the 768p screen. I'm using it for programming and GIS software
>>
>>61743398
That's unfortunate. There's no excuse for a low res display on such a modern laptop. Try finding one on ebay. The ones you get from dedicated laptop stores are usually former corporate laptops that were originally bought in huge truck loads. These are usually the lowest spec versions because greedy jew bosses don't care if their employees get eye cancer.

The X1, while decent for what it is, really don't have any business being called a ThinkPad.

I can put xubuntu on a t420 right?

I can't tell if it has the nvidia card from the posting but I doubt it does. And it's still doable anyway.

I saw a post by gentoo people having to compile some special wifi driver stuff but that's just gentoo foss stuff right?
>>
>>61743449
1. The T60 is absolutely beautiful. What's the resolution?
2. X301 specs? Why is it your endgame?
3. Where's your X230's palmrest gone?
>>
>>61743510
ThinkPads, especially the xx00-20 range, are some of the best supported computers you can find for Linux.
Ubuntu and its derivatives don't have a hateboner for blobs so your stock wifi card should work fine.
>>
>>61743533

Nice, I figured the fact it was virtually impossible to find information on would mean that no-one ever has any issues so never talks about it but wanted to be sure.
>>
>>61743499
just checked ebay out of mere interest. Here in Germany a FHD X260 is around 700€-800€. Just for your reference. Some people want up to 1000€ depending on CPU, RAM, SSD etc
>>
>>61743509
why specifically? because everything is soldered shut and might not follow the military grade build quality of its brethren?
>>
>>61743543
Don't worry. I've been using Ubuntu on an X220 (which is pretty much identical to the T420 when it comes to hardware) for years. Everything including WiFi and Bluetooth, brightness and volume keys, VGA etc. worked out of the box. Though you might have to set screen gamma to 0.8 or 0.7 using xrandr, at least on the X series TN panel.
>>
and what about the T460s series? The only reason I'm considering that over the 'normal' T460 is the 14 inch screen.
>>
>>61743552
I'm kind of hesitant on spending that amounts via eBay, I would honestly be more inclined to drive over there and inspect it first
>>
>>61743630
Totally valid. Especially if the seller only offers stock photos. If you order, make sure to use PayPal. That way you're gonna get your money back if it's a fraud.
>>
>>61743562
Basically, yes. That's the short version. It's fine as a modern ultrabook or 2-in-1 but not so much as a durable, serviceable and customizable laptop. Which is what most people here like their ThinkPads for being. I mean, we often advise people to buy six year old models. Can you think of many other brands of laptop that would even be in usable condition after that much use?
>>
>>61743610
You mean it has better screen options?
They are obviously both 14".

No rear battery is a big downside IMO.

Have a T460p myself, but unfortunately if you don't need a quadcore I can't really recommend it either because of the poor battery life (it has no internal battery and uses more battery than dual cores).
Very nice QHD screen though.

I also know someone with an L460.
I was surprised by the build quality, not that much below T series at all just a little more flex (which you won't notice unless you purposely try to bend the chassis).
Screen is "only" FHD but still nice.

1. 1600x1200 but there's several blemishes and I don't like how CCFL backlights look.
2. It's my endgame because it's thinner than my X230 but has a bigger, high resolution screen and longer battery life and MUCH better build quality (you don't know what you're missing, worth it just for how sturdy it feels and the rubberised palm rest and bezel alone.) The screen's also pretty great, not IPS but like 80% of the way there. Viewing angles are competitive with even the latest TN screens. I'm downgrading from the X230 because I no longer need the power and storage since my old desktop is back together in a tiny chassis (pictured.)
3. It's got a crack in it and I'm selling the X230 shortly. I Just fixed a 1-3-3-1 error that was caused by having the antenna cables for the cellular network module flapping around with some tape and there's no point closing it until I get the replacement palm rest.

>>
So /tpg/ I have an x220t and I want to add an egpu to my setup because I need compute since I've gotten into machine learning and I also want you passthrough for games

So I need an Nvidia card for CUDA
Anyway, I'm on Linux, I've read a bit about GPU passthrough, I heard you can't use the card outside the VM even when it's shutdown with xorg, but I just need it for compute, so does that restriction still apply? Technically I won't be using it with X

More importantly, what am I looking at hardware wise? I need to pick up an expresscard -> PCIe dongle but I want to avoid needing a seperate PSU.
What's the recommended PCIe adapter now?

How are you going to power up eGPU if not via separate PSU?
expresscard provides about 2W of power. GTX 750Ti drains 75W.

On the old chassis, it's literally one screw to take off the bay cover and four for the size adapter, assuming you need it. There's a quick access panel for it under the left plamrest. Designed to be quick, easy and out of your hair. This is the beauty of older ThinkPads. They're a fucking dream to service.

Do you know how many screws I had to take out to replace both RAM slots on my T420 (basically the same design) earlier? Two. One was even captive to the bottom cover. Took me about 10 minutes to slide the back cover off, change the bottom slot, slide the keyboard out and do the same to the top one. Would've been faster if I'd done it before. These things are a dream to tinker with.

This. Considering the loss of vertical space, Lenovo's switch to 16:9 was a major downgrade. The lower end screens gained some horizontal space but incresing the overall resolution while sticking with 16:10 would have been the better decision. They should have just made 1440x900 their lowest availalable resolution.
>>
>have to choose between freefag t400 and powerful t430
Fucking shit, if I can't use libreboot there's fucking proprietary blobs in Coreboot. I don't care if it's less than 10kb I might as well just sell all my info and build a gaymen PC with Windows 10 because who the fuck knows what backdoors are in those blobs

What's the best place to find a replacement keyboard for a T420? I'd rather be buying new old stock if I can and most sites aren't clear on what they're selling.

Who cares. It's got 8gb so I can have all the stuff open I want. I just put my desktop back together, my priorities were build quality, thinness, screen quality and battery - the X301 equalls or trumps the X230 on all of these. The keyboard is awesome and I have an effective 9 cell battery in a device which is 2cm thick.
>>
>>61742152
Just put the two side by side, the T60 has much better fit and finish, it's a higher quality machine.

Also what's with the weird places they put ports on the T61? Audio jacks on the front?

Shit like this was already being done to the T61.

At 12" you always have to compromise between screen real estate and text size. On a 12" 1366x768 (120ppi) screen at standard scaling text is, while small, readable, but if you want more screen real estate you'll end up with text too small and blurry to read.
On a higher res screen you get more screen real estate while text is still readable.

I'm completely fine with 1366x768 on my X230 but I only use it for shitposting and anime. I couldn't get shit done comfortably at that resolution/size.

btw I experience a lot of screen tearing on Linux even with Compton enabled. Does anyone know how to get rid of that? I'm using i3wm and MATE
