This is a software meant to emulate painting. Brush engines are used to simulate the way actual paint brushes react, bend, etc when against canvas. This can be extremely important for certain types of painting, like water colour.

Photoshop has something similar but it's extremely shitty and not worth using.

A brush engine is what makes Clip Studio the best program to paint in, and Krita a laughing stock. Krita needs to fix it's stabilization methods, as those are shit as well.
