I think the X200, T400, or T500 are the oldest you should go. They have a mobile Core 2 Duo, which isn't too bad to comfortably use a modern word processor and web browser.

Prices get driven up a little on amazon and ebay because /g/ has managed to meme Thinkpads into retaining their value more than most laptops. Craigslist or Gumtree are your best options.

I have a T60 and it's fine for what I use it for.

I have T420 with Debian on it. It's not much, but enough for comfy programming station, if you don't need to run anything memory consuming (no playing with Cassandra, gonna eat all of your resources).
