whatsapp doesn't require play services at all. Most apps which claim they need play services actually don't, and ignoring the warning (tapping outside of message box) will make the app work. If you want Google Apps (also snapchat) your only bet is microg, which is really easy on android 6 but a little bit hard on 7 since there isn't xposed support yet.

You can use Newpipe from f-droid to do this. Of course, this changes nothing about using Google's proprietary services although you limit the amount of data they can harvest from you a bit.

The two I use on a daily basis are Fast Notepad(self explanatory) and FBReader (ebook reader). Highly recommend both.
